Eight slaughterplants with throughputs ranging from 20 to 300 animals per day were examined to estimate the incidence of dark cutting beef in the United Kingdom. Four thousand, eight hundred and sixteen animals were surveyed and information concerning animal category, source, season and preslaughter handling conditions recorded. Muscle samples were removed to estimate glycogen concentration and after incubation, ultimate pH. The overall incidence of dark cutting (pHu ≥ 6·0) was 4·1%. Increased incidence was associated with short (≤ 20 miles) and long (≥ 150 miles) transport distances. Slaughter on the day of arrival rather than overnight lairage also increased the incidence. Plants were classified into small (killing ≤ 50 animals per day) or large (killing ≥ 100 per day). Eighty per cent of the animals slaughtered passed through the large plants, and a higher incidence was also associated with these plants. Bulls had the highest incidence and heifers the lowest. A seasonal effect was recorded with the highest incidence found between July and October. The results, however, indicate that factors in addition to those examined are also important.  相似文献

Summary: A semi‐batch process using nitroxide mediated polymerization, was explored for the design of low molecular weight solvent‐borne coatings, typical of those used in the automotive industry. While living radical polymerization (LRP) offers many advantages in the control of polymer chain microstructure that may confer important physical and chemical property benefits to coatings, adapting LRP to a semi‐batch process poses significant challenges in the design and operation of the process. Using styrene monomer, various two‐component initiating systems (free radical initiator, 4‐hydroxy‐TEMPO) were studied to understand the effects of different initiators on the course of polymerization. In addition, an alkoxyamine was synthesized and used as the initiating source. The initiators Luperox 7M75 and Luperox 231 give higher polymerization rates and reasonable control over polymerization, while benzoyl peroxide (BPO), Vazo 67, and the alkoxyamine are less effective. The number of polymer chains in the final product is always less than the theoretical value, reflecting poor initiation efficiency, probably resulting from undesirable termination reactions that become important due to the nature of the semi‐batch process. Adding camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) or charging initiator concurrently with monomer during semi‐batch feed, can increase the polymerization rate while maintaining the living character of the polymerization. The copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate is also shown to exhibit living character.

The purpose of this work was to show that physical aging effects in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) could be correlated with the nonequilibrium state of the glassy polymer, as measured by dilatometry. Specimens were annealed at a series of temperatures within the glass transition region (90, 95 and 100°C) and quenched or slowly cooled to the test temperature (40 or 60°C). Volume recovery was monitored throughout the experiment by accurate dilatometry, and low strain tensile creep compliance measurements were made simultaneously on specimens subjected to identical thermal treatments. At both test temperatures, creep behavior and volume recovery showed a similar dependence on annealing temperature and time. However, the specific volume alone was not sufficient to characterize the aging behavior of glassy PMMA: it was also necessary to define the path by which the state of the glass was reached. This memory effect, which has a direct parallel in volume recovery, is attributed to the presence of a distribution of retardation times, and accounts for, the seemingly paradoxical observation that the creep compliance can initially increase on aging at a temperature below Tg if the specimen has previously been stored for a long period at a lower temperature.  相似文献

The development of a detailed model describing particle growth in olefin copolymerization systems is presented. The Multigrain Model considers in detail monomer sorption, mass transfer, and changing porosity within the growing particle, as well as heat and mass transfer across the external film of the particle. The model predicts catalyst performance, including polymerization rates and particle morphology, in different reactor media without parameter adjustment. Internal void fractions are calculated through an examination of the relative growth rates within the growing particle. The model is used to examine the effects of mass transfer limitations, prepolymerization, and nonuniform metal distribution on the particle growth process. Model predictions of morphology show the same trends as observed experimentally.  相似文献

A real-time nonlinear optimization scheme is implemented for the high temperature starved feed semi-batch solution polymerization used to produce acrylic resins for automotive coatings. The system input and state trajectories are determined on-line to minimize a cost function defined in terms of deviation from target molecular weight and composition, and batch time. The performance of the proposed strategy is examined through numerical simulation for several study cases for semibatch butyl methacrylate and styrene (BMA/STY) free radical copolymerization. Results show that polymer quality can be assured in reduced batch time while achieving constraint satisfaction over the entire run.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the problem of determining whether a mobile robot, called the pursuer, is able to maintain strong mutual visibility (a visibility notion between regions over a convex partition of the environment) of an antagonist agent, called the evader. We frame the problem as a non cooperative game. We consider the case in which the pursuer and the evader move at bounded speed, traveling in a known polygonal environment with or without holes, and in which there are no restrictions as to the distance that might separate the agents. Unlike our previous efforts (Murrieta-Cid et al. in Int J Robot Res 26:233–253, 2007), we give special attention to the combinatorial problem that arises when searching for a solution through visiting several locations in an environment with obstacles. In this paper we take a step further, namely, we assume an antagonistic evader who moves continuously and unpredictably, but with a constraint over its set of admissible motion policies, as the evader moves in the shortest-path roadmap, also called the reduced visibility graph (RVG). The pursuer does not know which among the possible paths over the RVG the evader will choose, but the pursuer is free to move within all the environment. We provide a constructive method to solve the decision problem of determining whether or not the pursuer is able to maintain strong mutual visibility of the evader. This method is based on an algorithm that computes the safe areas (areas that keep evader surveillance) at all times. We prove decidability of this problem, and provide a complexity measure to this evader surveillance game; both contributions hold for any general polygonal environment that might or not contain holes. All our algorithms have been implemented and we show simulation results.  相似文献

As the whole context of nursing continues to change radically in the face of unmet societal needs, nothing short of total revolution will suffice. Nurses must take control of nursing practice and be critical of the nation's inadequate "sick-care" system in order to effect sweeping changes in the scope, availability and efficacy of healthcare in the U.S. To do this requires an acknowledgment that true nursing education cannot exist without nursing practice. The transformation of curriculum must center on caring, which characterizes what nurses really do in a medically dominated system focused exclusively on curing.  相似文献

Data on the severities of the injuries to the drivers involved in two-vehicle crashes are presented and related to the relative masses of the vehicles. At any given mass ratio, there is found to be a positive correlation between the severities of injury to the two drivers. This arises because the relative velocity before impact is the same for both drivers in the one accident, but varies considerably between different accidents. The correlation may be modelled approximately by assuming relative velocity has a two-point distribution.  相似文献

The glass transition of thermoplastics of different polydispersity and thermosets of different network structure has been studied by conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature modulated DSC (TMDSC). The cooling rate dependence of the thermal glass transition temperature Tg measured by DSC, and the frequency dependence of the dynamic glass transition temperature T measured by TMDSC have been investigated. The relation between the cooling rate and the frequency necessary to achieve the same glass transition temperature has been quantified in terms of a logarithmic difference Δ=log10[|q|]−log10(ω), where |q| is the absolute value of the cooling rate in K s−1 and ω is the angular frequency in rad s−1 necessary to obtain Tg(q)=T(ω). The values of Δ obtained for various polymers at a modulation period of 120 s (frequency of 8.3 mHz) are between 0.14 and 0.81. These values agree reasonably well with the theoretical prediction [Hutchinson JM, Montserrat S. Thermochim Acta 2001;377:63 [6]] based on the model of Tool–Narayanaswamy–Moynihan with a distribution of relaxation times. The results are discussed and compared with those obtained by other authors in polymeric and other glass-forming systems.  相似文献

In contrast to conventional image-capture systems, which attempt to minimize the amount of data collected during capture, typically by using hardware filters, the more general condition of using all information captured on a camera sensor is much more challenging and requires rigorous consideration of the hardware and software pipelines to obtain accurate tracking results. In this paper, this issue is specifically addressed by describing a unique hardware and software design implemented for use as a fully image-based capture system. An attempt is made to minimize the cost of this system by maximizing hardware control through software implementation. The hardware and software requirements are described in the context of the desired high-speed capture suitable for earthquake motions or other dynamic movements in a scene. Experiments are conducted and presented illustrating the good performance and stability of the system. This system is deemed suitable for the general condition of a building interior.  相似文献
