The goal of the present study was to quantify the increase of intramammary pressure (IMP) in dry-off during an extended milking interval of 72 h. In particular, we tested the hypothesis that feed restriction (no concentrate and roughage with reduced energy) causes earlier cessation of milk secretion and a lower IMP than continued feeding of the lactational diet. In addition to repeated IMP measurements, we tested a noninvasive method that records udder firmness (UF) via external application of pressure on the udder. Two experimental groups consisted of 10 Holstein cows each, with a daily milk yield of 20 to 25 kg. The restricted group (RG) was changed to restricted feeding on the afternoon of the final milking (0 h), whereas late-lactation feeding was continued in the control group (CG). Both IMP and UF were measured before and after the final milking immediately before milking was stopped for 72 h. These measurements represented IMP and UF levels at 10 h and 0 h milking intervals, respectively. Further measurements were performed at 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, and 72 h after final milking. Milk samples (2 mL) were taken through the IMP catheter at each sampling event, for analysis of somatic cell count (SCC) and serum albumin (SA). Both IMP and UF increased with time, and both parameters peaked at 30 h in CG and at 24 h in RG. The mean IMP from 18 to 72 h, compared with the 10-h IMP (normal milking interval) was higher in CG than in RG. The duration of elevated IMP and UF was prolonged in CG compared with RG (>36 h vs. 12 h). The Pearson correlation between IMP and UF was r = 0.67. Thus, the noninvasive measurement of UF is suitable to replace invasive IMP measurements. However, due to individual differences in udder shape, the correlation between UF and IMP was too low to predict exact IMP levels using UF. Both SCC (presented as logSCC) and SA increased after the final milking until the end of the experiment. The mean increase from 18 to 72 h, compared with levels immediately after final milking, was higher in CG than in RG for SCC but did not differ between treatments for SA. In conclusion, feed restriction causes a faster cessation of milk secretion and therefore limits the increase of IMP at dry-off.  相似文献

Structural ceramics are finding application in automotive and truck engines. Poppet valves and valve seats, for example, require resistance to surface damage from repetitive impacts. Grinding and finishing processes can leave microcracks or residual stresses in the surfaces of ceramics which can accelerate surface-initiated degradation processes. A ball-on-inclined plane, repetitive impact testing system has been developed to study the effects of finishing method on surface durability. Tests were performed by repeatedly striking ground alumina and silicon nitride flat specimens with a silicon nitride sphere and measuring the impact damage as a function of the number of strikes. One type of alumina and three types of silicon nitride ceramics were tested. A quantitative impact damage parameter (IDP), based on mechanical stylus profiling data, was developed for use in measuring small amounts of wear. When damage did not extend beyond the depth of valleys in the machined surfaces, the IDP exhibited an excellent linear correlation with the number of impacts of silicon nitride on both silicon nitride and alumina materials. When more extensive damage occurred, a method involving digitizing the area of the contact damage from photomicrographs provided a reasonable correlation with number of impacts. These two methods are compared. Scanning electron microscopy revealed features which can affect the accuracy of impact damage measurement. Implications of the technique are discussed.  相似文献

The introduction of increasingly corrosive road-deicing chemicals has created significant and costly problems for the trucking industry. From a tribological perspective, corrosion of the sliding surfaces of brakes after exposure to road salts can create oxide scales that affect friction. This paper describes experiments on the effects of exposure to sodium chloride and magnesium chloride sprays on the transient frictional behavior of cast iron and a titanium-based composite sliding against a commercial brake lining material. Corrosion scales on cast iron, whose compositions were analyzed by several methods, initially act as abrasive third-bodies. Then they become crushed, spread out, and behave as a solid lubricant. Owing to its greater corrosion resistance, the titanium composite remained scale-free and its frictional response was markedly different. No corrosion scales were formed on the titanium composite after aggressive exposure to salts; however, a reduction in friction was still observed. Unlike the crystalline sodium chloride deposits that tended to remain dry, hygroscopic magnesium chloride deposits absorbed ambient moisture from the air, liquefied, and retained a persistent lubricating effect on the titanium surfaces.  相似文献

Investigated the role of a group structuring technique developed by G. Egan (1973, 1976) on the amount and depth of process involvement in 2 8-member counseling training groups consisting of graduate students (aged 21–56 yrs). The primary hypothesis was that the structured group would have a higher amount and depth of process involvement scores across time than the no-structure group. Results partly support the conclusion that early structure significantly affects process involvement among group members. Findings also indicate that both groups showed strong gains in depth of process involvement over time. Results are discussed in terms of previous research by R. L. Bednar et al (see record 1974-25973-001) and C. Y. Crews and J. Melnick (see record 1976-21029-001). It is suggested that future research should explore interactions between interpersonal style differences of individual members and various structuring techniques. A new surface engineering research tool, called a scanning microsclerometer (SMS), has been developed. It uses nano-indentation technology and a piezoelectric transducer positioning system to generate high-precision scratch patterns on the surfaces of metals and, by monitoring the instantaneous displacement of the stylus tip, can generate scratch hardness and scratching force maps of the surface. A dual-stroke process is used. The first stroke at low load profiles the surface to establish a reference datum and the second pass, in the opposite direction and at higher load, produces the indentation scratch. Examples of micro-scratch hardness mapping experiments, using scratch spacings of 1·0 μm, on a silicon carbide-based ceramic composite are used to illustrate the capabilities of the SIVIS. Using end-on fibers in the rectangular stylus scanning area, the difference in scratch hardnesses of the fibers, the matrix, and even the thin carbon coatings in the fiber-matrix interface could be detected. The SMS was originally developed to produce scratch hardness maps, but it is also useful for conducting accurately controlled, single-point micro-machining patterns and in studies of differential material abrasion.  相似文献

A new class of more effective lubricants could lead to huge energy savings. Limited recent literature has suggested potential for using room-temperature ionic liquids as lubricants, however, only a few out of millions (or more) of species possible have been evaluated. In this study, a series of new protic alkylammonium ionic liquids were synthesized by neutralization and metathesis reactions, and have demonstrated promising lubricating properties as neat lubricants or lubricant additives, particularly for use with difficult-to-lubricate metals like aluminum. More than a 30% friction reduction was observed with ammonium-based ionic liquids compared to conventional hydrocarbon oils in reciprocating sliding tests of 52100 bearing steel on aluminum alloy 6061-T6511. The inherent polarity of ionic liquids is believed to provide strong adsorption to contact surfaces and can form a boundary lubricating film leading to friction and wear reductions. Other advantages of ionic liquids include (1) negligible volatility, (2) high thermal stability, (3) non-flammability, and (4) better intrinsic properties that may eliminate the need for more complex and expensive additive packages. With very flexible molecular structures, this new class of lubricants, particularly ammonium-based ionic liquids, can be tailored to fit a variety of applications.  相似文献
