The health and well-being of individuals and the prosperity of the country require a well-nourished population. Canadians face unprecedented challenges to the goal of healthy eating and physical activity. The challenges are complex and dietitians have a collective responsibility to respond as thoughtful, competent practitioners. As we embrace the future, we need to understand our past and reflect on how we will create a future that will support nutritional health and well-being for all Canadians. Dietitians, in partnership with others, must play a key role.     

Time perception and reproduction in young adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n ?=? 104) were compared with a control group (n ?=? 64) on time estimation and reproduction tasks. Results were unaffected by ADHD subtype or gender. The ADHD group provided larger time estimations than did the control group, particularly at long intervals. This became nonsignificant after controlling for IQ. The ADHD group made shorter reproductions than the control group (15- and 60-s intervals) and greater reproduction errors (12-, 45-, 60-s durations). These differences remained after controlling for IQ and comorbid oppositional defiant disorder, depression, and anxiety. Only the level of anxiety contributed to errors (at 12-s duration) beyond the level of ADHD. Results extended findings on time perception in ADHD children to adults and ruled out comorbidity as the basis of the errors. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

The Influence of Package Size and Flute Type of Corrugated Boxes on Load Bridging in Unit Loads

Shipping pallets often are designed with the assumption that the payload carried is flexible and uniformly distributed on the pallet surface. However, packages on the pallet can act as a series of discrete loads, and the physical interactions among the packages can add stiffness to the pallet/load combination. The term ‘load bridging’ has been used to describe this phenomenon. The study reported in this paper investigated the relationships of package size, corrugated flute type and pallet stiffness to load bridging and the resulting unit‐load deflection. The experimental results indicated that an increase in box size changed the unit‐load deflection by as much as 75%. Flute type was found to impact load bridging and the resulting unit‐load deflection. Changing the corrugated box flute type from B‐flute or BC‐flute to E‐flute reduces the unit‐load deflection by as much as 40%. Also, experimental data indicates that the effect of package size and corrugated board flute type on pallet deflection is the greatest for low stiffness pallets. Microstructure and Electrical Transport Properties of Bi<Subscript>3</Subscript>TiNbO<Subscript>9</Subscript> High-Temperature Piezoceramics

High-density ceramic samples of the Bi₃TiNbO₉ ferroelectric phase with a layered perovskite-like structure have been produced by tape casting slurry technology and hot pressing processes. The samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and dielectric, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric measurements. The results demonstrate that the samples have a well-defined texture due to the preferential orientation of the basal planes of their platelike grains across the pressing axis or along the film casting direction. The Curie temperature of the samples has been determined to be T_C = 1180 K. The samples have anisotropic electrical transport characteristics. Their piezoelectric constants d₃₃ in directions perpendicular and parallel to the texture plane is 22 and 5 pC/N, respectively. The conclusion has been drawn that the synthesized materials are potentially attractive for producing high-temperature piezoelectric elements.     

Depressed Mood and Smoking Experimentation Among Preteens.

The authors examined children's depressed mood, parental depressed mood, and parental smoking in relation to children's smoking susceptibility and experimentation over 20 months in a cohort of 418 preteens (ages 10-12 at baseline) and their parents. Depressed mood in preteens was strongly related to experimentation but not to susceptibility. In cross-sectional analyses parental depressed mood was related to children's experimentation, but in longitudinal analyses parental depressed mood at baseline did not differentiate children who experimented from those who did not. Although parental smoking was strongly related to experimentation, it was not related to susceptibility either cross-sectionally or longitudinally. Depressed mood among preteens and parents appeared to be more strongly related to children's smoking behaviors than to their intentions to smoke. Socioeconomic Status and Insomnia.

This investigation compared the likelihood of insomnia and insomnia-related health consequences among individuals of different socioeconomic status. A random-digit dialing procedure was used to recruit at least 50 men and 50 women in each age decade from 20 to 80 + years old. Participants completed 2 weeks of sleep diaries as well as questionnaires related to fatigue, sleepiness, and psychological distress. Socioeconomic status was measured by education status assessed at 3 different levels: individual, household, and community. Results indicated that individuals of lower individual and household education were significantly more likely to experience insomnia even after researchers accounted for ethnicity, gender, and age. Additionally, individuals with fewer years of education, particularly those who had dropped out of high school, experienced greater subjective impairment because of their insomnia. Stratified Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow calculations by the boundary element method

In this paper stratified Newtonian and viscoelastic flow problems are solved using a direct boundary integral formulation. Both the free surface and fluid/fluid interface geometries are unknown in advance. The technique is tested by comparison with some previously published finite element solutions and found to perform well. The extrusion of Newtonian/ Oldroyd-B and Oldroyd-B/Oldroyd-B fluids is considered in detail.     

Wireless ad hoc nanoscale networking - industry perspectives

Wireless ad hoc communication on the nanoscale will require thinking outside of the traditional radio spectrum. New applications will utilize new forms of wireless communication channels. For example, nanoscale communication will enable precise mechanisms for directly interacting with cells in vivo. Information may be sent to and from specific cells within the body, allowing detection and healing of diseases on the cellular scale. From a medical standpoint, the use of current wireless techniques to communicate with implants is unacceptable for many reasons, including bulky size, inability to use magnetic resonance imaging after implantation, potential radiation damage, surgical invasiveness, need to recharge/replace power, post-operative pain and long recovery times, and reduced quality of life for the patient. Better, more humane in vivo implant communication is needed. Development of both biological and engineered nanomachines is progressing; such machines will need to communicate [1]. Unfortunately, networking vast collections of nanoscale sensors and robots using current techniques, including wireless techniques, is not possible without communication mechanisms that exceed nanoscale volumes.
