Dexamethasone induces an increase in intracellular and membrane-associated lipocortin-1 (annexin-1) in rat astrocyte primary cultures

1. The antiinflammatory actions of glucocorticoid steroids are thought to occur through induction of the protein lipocortin-1 (LC-1; annexin-1). The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether astrocytic LC-1 content was increased in the presence of a synthetic glucocorticoid, dexamethasone. 2. Steroid-induced changes in cellular levels of LC-1 in astrocytes were determined by electrotransfer and immunoblotting techniques. Separate cell fractions were investigated to study the influence of dexamethasone on astroglial LC-1 content. The effect of culture state on LC-1 expression was also examined. 3. Intracellular LC-1 content was found to decrease after initiation of culture, with a substantial rise in both cell proliferation and LC-1 expression occurring after the replenishment of medium containing steroid-free serum. A further increase in intracellular LC-1 occurred upon incubation with dexamethasone. The glucocorticoid-induced change in intracellular LC-1 was a time-dependent event and coincided with an increase in membrane-associated LC-1. 4. The findings in this study indicate that astrocytic LC-1 content is influenced by cell culture conditions and, in the presence of glucocorticoid steroids, the cellular localization of LC-1 is altered. This may indicate that LC-1 has functions at more than one cellular locality.     

Diffusion bonding of ferritic oxide dispersion strengthened alloys to austenitic superalloys

The superior high temperature mechanical strength and oxidation resistance of ferritic oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) tubular alloys are compromised by the difficulties encountered in joining. Conventional fusion welding techniques generate a weld fusion zone which is devoid of the mechanical strength exhibited by the base material. Therefore, more sophisticated solid state joining techniques, such as diffusion bonding, must be employed when joining ODS materials. This paper describes a series of solid state diffusion bonding experiments carried out between two tubular ferritic ODS alloys and two high temperature austenitic alloys. Careful control of bonding conditions produced pressure retaining joints between one of the tubular ODS alloys and both austenitic alloys. The successful joint design was incorporated into the manufacture of a tubular creep component, which enabled a series of internally pressurized creep tests to be carried out. The microstructure developed at the bond interface of each of the four separate material couples is described and the high temperature performance of the pressure retaining joints is discussed.     

Magnetization and rotation of MTG HTSC ring in magnetic field

The magnetization of a melt-texture growth (MTG) HTSC ring has been studied. It is shown that the magnetic field inside the ring is larger than the external field under a certain range of external magnetic fields. We have also investigated the magnetic field dependence of the response of a detective coil near a rotating superconducting ring. The responses of the MTG sample are different for different cooling methods.     

Vibration of doubly-curved shallow shells

Summary This paper presents the free vibration of thin doubly-curved shallow shells of rectangular planform. The study covers wide combinations of free, simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. Both positive and negative Gaussian curvatures (spherical and hyperbolic paraboloidal shells resepectively) are considered. Thepb-2 Ritz energy based approach, along with the in-plane and transverse deflections assumed in the form of a product of mathematically complete two-dimensional orthogonal polynomials and a basic function, is employed to model the vibratory characteristic of these shells. Numerical results have been established through convergence study and comparison with published data from the open literature. Extensive sets of new results for various ranges of aspect ratio, curvature ratio andx- andy-shallowness ratios have been presented for future reference.     

Investigations of delamination criticality and the transferability of growth criteria

This article describes a study of delamination growth along 0 °/0 °, 0 °/ 5 °, ± 5 °, and 0 °/90 ° interfaces sandwiched between unidirectional carbon fibre/epoxy composite material. Relationships between damage criticality, growth rate and acoustic emission activity for delamination growth have been studied and the transferability of results from laboratory coupons to composite structural elements has been examined. Two types of coupon tests, conventional delamination beams and rigidly loaded single edge notched strips, have been compared for different mode ratios. Comparative tests have been made on buckling-induced delamination in plates. A graphite crack gauge has been used to measure delamination length and growth rate, ranging from 0.05–2000 m/s. Damage growth was also followed using visual, ultrasonic C-scan, X-ray radiography, macro-video and acoustic emission measurements. Empirical evaluations of interlaminar toughness for delamination beams are made using the Irwin-Kies relation. Unstable growth is analysed using elasto-dynamic moving finite elements. Bucklinginduced delamination is analysed using plate/shell FE methods with growth/remeshing algorithms.     

A behavioral approach to linear exact modeling

The behavioral approach to system theory provides a parameter-free framework for the study of the general problem of linear exact modeling and recursive modeling. The authors present the solution of the (continuous-time) polynomial-exponential time series modeling problem. Both recursive and nonrecursive solutions are provided and classified according to properties like complexity and controllability. It is shown, in particular, that recursive modeling corresponds to updating by means of a cascade inter-connection of systems. As a special case, the solution of several other problems, such as rational interpolation, realization, and modeling of arbitrary discrete-time time series, is obtained     

New ceramer high optical abrasion resistant transparent coating materials based on functionalized melamine and a tris(m-aminophenyl)phosphine oxide compound

Summary The synthesis of new high optical abrasion resistance coating materials has been undertaken by functionalizing melamine and tris(m-aminophenyl)phosphine oxide with a triethoxysilane containing reagent. These highly functionalized compounds have been used for coating a bis-phenol-A polycarbonate substrate by the sol-gel method. Preliminary data shows the abrasion resistance of the polymer substrate is considerably improved when it is coated by these optically clear materials.     

Afterburner [network-independent card for protocols]

Many current implementations of protocols such as the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) are inefficient because data are often accessed more frequently than necessary. Three techniques that reduce the need for memory bandwidth are proposed. The techniques are copy-on-write, page remapping, and single-copy. Afterburner, a network-independent card that provides the services that are necessary for a single-copy protocol stack, is described. The card has 1 MByte of local buffers and provides a simple interface to a variety of network link adapters, including HIPPI and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). Afterburner can support transfers to and from the link adapter card at rates up to 1 Gbit/s. An implementation of TCP/IP that uses the features provided by Afterburner to reduce the movement of data to a single copy is discussed. Measurements of the end-to-end performance of Afterburner and the single-copy implementation of TCP/IP are presented     

Dietary α-Tocopheryl Acetate Enhances Beef Quality in Holstein and Beef Breed Steers

The effect of long-term feeding (252 days) of three supplemental levels of α-tocopheryl acetate (actual 0, 360 and 1290 IU/head/day) on meat quality was evaluated in Holstein and beef breed steers. Tissue vitamin E concentrations were increased by each increment of supplementation. The color display life of fresh beef under simulated retail conditions was extended 2 to 5 days by vitamin E and lipid oxidation was markedly reduced. Microbial population was not affected by level of supplementation. No deterioration in sensory quality occurred for steaks from supplemented steers that were displayed until the time steaks from unsupplemented steers discolored.
