Neural components of social evaluation.

Evaluative responses appear to involve 2 seemingly distinct sets of processes: those that are automatically activated and others that are more consciously controlled. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the authors investigated the brain systems associated with automatic and controlled evaluative processing. Participants made either evaluative (good-bad) or nonevaluative (past-present) judgments about famous names. Greater amygdala activity was observed for names rated as "bad" relative to those rated as "good," regardless of whether the task directly involved an evaluative judgment (good-bad) or not (past-present). Good-bad judgments resulted in greater medial and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity than past-present judgments. Furthermore, there was greater ventrolateral PFC activity in good-bad judgments marked by greater ambivalence. Together, these findings indicate a neural distinction between processes engaged for automatic and controlled evaluation. Thermodynamic calculations for Nb-containing high-speed steels and white-cast-iron alloys

Thermodynamical equilibria have been calculated for a wide variety of high-speed steel compositions belonging to the multicomponent system Fe-C-W-Mo-V-Cr-Nb as well as for two series of white-cast-iron alloys containing niobium. Some temperature-concentration diagrams for both classes of alloys are presented and calculated quantities (melting and transformation temperatures, amounts and compositions of phases) are compared with experimental data. Good agreement between calculated and experimental information has been obtained, with the exception of the MC phase compositions and transformation temperatures for white-cast-iron alloys with high carbon and chromium contents. These differences can, however, be satisfactorily explained by plausible kinetic effects.     

Floating-patch MEMS antennas on HRS substrate for millimetre-wave applications

Novel floating-patch micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) antennas are proposed for millimetre-wave applications. The floating-patch MEMS antennas are fabricated on a high resistivity silicon (HRS) substrate using surface micromachining technology. Simulation and experimental results for reflection coefficients and radiation patterns are presented.     

ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF TRYPSIN INHIBITOR FROM THE WATER FERN, AZOLLA PINNATA R.Br.

Trypsin inhibitor from water fern (Azolla pinnata R. Br.) was isolated and characterized. Extraction of Azolla leaf meal in NaCl (0.15 M) rendered a higher recovery of trypsin inhibitor compared to other solvents tested (P < 0.05). The extraction time affected the inhibitor recovery significantly (P < 0.05). The extraction time of 3 h was optimum for the recovery of trypsin inhibitor. Based on inhibitor activity of a zone separated by electrophoresis, the molecular mass of the inhibitor from Azolla leaf was 21 kDa. The partially purified inhibitor was heat stable up to 10 min at 90C, at pH 7.0. High activity was also retained over a wide pH range (4–8) at 37C.     

Deposition and Properties of Superconducting MgB2 Thin Films

The recently discovered superconductor MgB₂ with T _c at 39 K has great potential in superconducting electronics. In this paper, we review the deposition techniques used for MgB₂ thin films in the light of a thermodynamic study of the Mg-B system with the calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) modeling technique. This thermodynamic study identifies a growth window in the pressure–temperature phase diagram, in which the magnesium pressure is very high for likely in situ growth temperatures. A Hybrid Physical–Chemical Vapor Deposition (HPCVD) technique that successfully achieves such a high Mg pressure is shown to produce in situ epitaxial MgB₂ thin films with bulk superconducting properties.     

Consumption of solutions containing sodium chloride is enhanced in female oxytocin-deficient mice.

Intact and ovariectomized oxytocin (OT)-deficient (OT-/-) and wild-type (OT+/+) mice were tested for consumption of 0.5 M NaCl solution or tap water in a 2-bottle choice test. During 3 days of acclimation, voluntary ingestion of NaCl was equal between genotypes. After overnight fluid deprivation, intact OT-/- mice ingested 2 times more NaCl solution than OT+/+ mice in the 6th hr, but not the 1 st hr, after reintroduction of fluid. Ovariectomized mice consumed less than intact mice after overnight fluid deprivation. When a 0.2 M NaCl solution was administered for 6 days in ovariectomized mice, OT-/- mice voluntarily consumed greater amounts than OT+/+ mice. After overnight fluid deprivation, consumption by OT-/- mice was 3 times that of OT+/+ mice at 1 hr and 2-fold greater after 6 hr. Enhanced intake of NaCl-containing solutions in female OT-/- mice suggests that central OT may be an important inhibitor of sodium consumption. Risk Factors for Course of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Vietnam Veterans: A 14-Year Follow-Up of American Legionnaires.

Risk factors affecting the course of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are poorly understood. As part of a larger study on characterizing exposure to herbicides in Vietnam, the authors investigated this issue in a random sample of 1,377 American Legionnaires who had served in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War and were followed over a 14-year period. High combat exposure, perceived negative community attitudes at homecoming, minority race, depression symptoms at Time 1, and more anger at Time 1 predicted a more chronic course. Community involvement at Time 1 was protective and associated with decreased risk at Time 2. Discomfort in disclosing Vietnam experiences was associated with an increased risk for developing PTSD but did not predict its course. Combat exposure predicted PTSD course more strongly than any other risk factor. Findings suggest recovery from PTSD is significantly influenced by perceived social support. Infrastructure IP for configuration and test of boards and systems

Embedding infrastructure IP to optimize chip-level manufacturing test and debugging has recently become common practice. However, adopting the same approach for boards and systems requires a different family of infrastructure IP. This article introduces such a family and discusses how it can optimize manufacturing test and debugging, as well as support configurability, especially in today's reconfigurable products.
