The relation between luminous properties and oxygen content inZnS:TbOF thin-film electroluminescent devices fabricated byradio-frequency magnetron sputtering method

The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between the oxygen concentration and brightness degradation in ZnS:TbOF green thin-film electroluminescent (EL) devices. The characteristics including crystallinity, optical, and electrical properties were discussed. The brightness-voltage (B-V) measurement results shelved that with higher oxygen-content in ZnS:TbOF phosphor layer, lower brightness was measured. It was consistent with the poor crystallinity, worse photoluminescent intensity, and easier to get moisture in the oxygen-rich (O/Tb>1) phosphor film. Furthermore, deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements identified that when the O/Tb ratio was greater than 1, the oxygen-related deep hole traps E_H1 and/or E_H2 could be detected in the ZnS:TbOF phosphor layer. These E _H1 and/or E_H2 traps were believed to be the main killers for the brightness of the device since they capture most of the holes from the generated electron-hole pairs. This evidence strongly supports that the modified energy transfer model is more dominant than direct impact excitation during the luminescent process     

Celiac disease: helping families adapt

Lifelong dietary compliance prevents the long-term effects associated with celiac disease. However, this simple solution, diet, has many long-reaching effects on the children affected with celiac disease and their families. Assisting families in coping with this chronic illness is necessary for children and families to develop a sense of control. An overview of celiac disease is presented through the use of a case study. Guidelines are given to enable the healthcare provider to understand and help families through the process of adapting to a child with a chronic illness. Recommendations for nutritional management with helpful suggestions related to making celiac disease an everyday part of family life are discussed.     

Ventricular perforation associated with central venous introducer-dilator systems

BACKGROUND: An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) of at least 40 mm/h is considered an important requisite for the diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). However, the relative frequency and clinical features of PMR in patients without a significantly increased ESR are unclear. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of patients diagnosed as having PMR at the rheumatology divisions of 3 teaching hospitals. The diagnosis of PMR was established, regardless of the ESR, in 201 consecutive patients fulfilling the following criteria: (1) age 50 years or older, (2) severe proximal pain for more than 1 month in at least 2 of 3 areas: neck, shoulder, and/or pelvic girdles, and (3) rapid resolution of the syndrome while taking low-dose prednisone. Patients with giant cell arteritis were previously excluded from the study. The frequency and clinical features of patients with PMR and an ESR lower than 40 mm/h were analyzed. A comparative study between these patients and those with high ESRs was performed. RESULTS: An ESR lower than 40 mm/h was found in 41 patients (20.4%). These patients were younger (P = .02), were more frequently men (P = .006), and experienced a lower frequency of fever (P = .003) and weight loss (P = .07). Furthermore, these patients were characterized by an absence of anemia (P = .002) and a lower frequency of abnormal protein electrophoresis results (P < .001). Otherwise, their clinical syndrome, response to therapy, and frequency of relapses were similar to those of patients with classic PMR. In the entire population of 201 patients, the ESR was related to the length of treatment, number of areas involved, presence of fever, weight loss, and laboratory test result abnormalities, but it was unrelated to the duration of the illness prior to diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: It is not uncommon to find a patient with PMR with an ESR lower than 40 mm/h. This syndrome is more frequent in men and it is clinically less severe than the classic form of PMR. Its recognition will allow these patients to benefit from an effective treatment with low-dose corticosteroids.     

Minors held by majors: the H13 minor histocompatibility locus defined as a peptide/MHC class I complex

The products of minor histocompatibility (H) loci are serious barriers to tissue transplantation even among major histocompatibility complex (MHC) identical individuals, frequently causing chronic graft rejection and graft versus host disease. Over 50 minor H loci map to mouse autosomal chromosomes but none are known at the molecular level. By expression cloning, we identified the H13 locus, a classical minor H locus first detected 30 years ago by the trait of graft rejection. The H13a allele is located on chromosome 2 and encodes a novel protein that yields the rare naturally processed nonapeptide SSVVGVWYL (SVL9) for presentation by the Db MHC class I molecule. The SVL9 peptide binds Db MHC despite the absence of the consensus binding motif, and a conservative methyl group substitution (Valine 4 <--> Isoleucine) explains why reciprocal T cell responses are elicited in H13a and H13b congenic strains.     

Severe pulmonary hypertension reversed by antibiotics in a patient with Whipple's disease

The case is described of a 58 year old man with systemic Whipple's disease with pericardial and pleural effusions and severe pulmonary hypertension. After three months of antibiotic treatment there was a complete resolution, not only of the symptoms known to be associated with Whipple's disease (diarrhoea, arthralgia, pericardial and pleural effusions), but also of pulmonary hypertension.     

Multidimensional augmented current equation including velocityovershoot

The augmented drift-diffusion current equation, which includes velocity overshoot effects through the space derivatives of the electric field, cannot be directly extended beyond one dimension. A new formalism is developed which considers the carrier heating and the distribution relaxation effects to obtain a multidimensional augmented drift diffusion current equation. The equivalent mobility containing the velocity overshoot correction is derived from the perturbation analysis on the carrier temperature using the energy balance equation. The issues related to the numerical implementation of this generalized model and the validity of the assumptions are also discussed     

A system for recognizing a large class of engineering drawings

We present a system for recognizing a large class of engineering drawings characterized by alternating instances of symbols and connection lines. The class includes domains such as flowcharts, logic and electrical circuits, and chemical plant diagrams. The output of the system, a netlist identifying the symbol types and interconnections, may be used for design simulation or as a compact portable representation of the drawing. The automatic recognition task is divided into two stages: 1) domain-independent rules are used to segment symbols from connection lines in the drawing image that has been thinned, vectorized, and preprocessed in routine ways; 2) a drawing understanding subsystem works in concert with a set of domain-specific matchers to classify symbols and correct errors automatically. A graphical user interface is provided to correct residual errors interactively and to log data for reporting errors objectively. The system has been tested on a database of 64 printed images drawn from text books and handbooks in different domains and scanned at 150 and 300 dpi resolution

This contribution describes the preparation, based upon a chemically amplified novolak resist (CAR), electron beam lithography, and ECR plasma etching, of structures with a high aspect ratio (10∶1) and lateral dimensions in the sub-micrometer range (150nm–300nm) which may serve as collector surfaces for sub-μm dust particles in a space experiment.     

Long-wavelength 640×486 GaAs-AlGaAs quantum well infraredphotodetector snap-shot camera

A 9-μm cutoff 640×486 snap-shot quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) camera has been demonstrated. The performance of this QWIP camera is reported including indoor and outdoor imaging. The noise equivalent differential temperature (NEΔT) of 36 mK has been achieved at 300 K background with f/2 optics. This is in good agreement with expected focal plane array sensitivity due to the practical limitations on charge handling capacity of the multiplexer, read noise, bias voltage, and operating temperature
