A necessary step in the use of natural gas (methane) in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is its preliminary conversion to hydrogen and carbon monoxide. To perform methane conversion within fuel cells and avoid catalyst carbonization the molar ratio between methane and steam (or steam with carbon dioxide) should be 1:2 or higher at the SOFC inlet. In this article two possible technological approaches to provide this desirable ratio in a combined SOFC–gas turbine system are compared. The first approach involves generation of the required steam in the coupled gas turbine cycle. The second (which is more traditional) involves recycling some part of the exhaust gases around the anodes of the SOFC stack. 相似文献

An extensive overview is provided of various energy- and exergy-based efficiencies used in the analysis of power cycles. Vapor and gas power cycles, cogeneration cycles and geothermal power cycles are examined, and consideration is given to different cycle designs. The many approaches that can be used to define efficiencies are provided and their implications discussed. Improvements of the management of energy in power plants that stem from understanding the efficiencies better are described. Examples are given to illustrate the efficiencies and their differences, with the results presented using combined energy and exergy diagrams. It is anticipated that the results will provide a convenient and practical tool for engineers and researchers dealing with the analysis, design, optimization and improvement of power cycles. 相似文献

This study addresses economic aspects of introducing renewable technologies in place of fossil fuel ones to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike for traditional fossil fuel technologies, greenhouse gas emissions from renewable technologies are associated mainly with plant construction and the magnitudes are significantly lower. The prospects are shown to be good for producing the environmentally clean fuel hydrogen via water electrolysis driven by renewable energy sources. Nonetheless, the cost of wind- and solar-based electricity is still higher than that of electricity generated in a natural gas power plant. With present costs of wind and solar electricity, it is shown that, when electricity from renewable sources replaces electricity from natural gas, the cost of greenhouse gas emissions abatement is about four times less than if hydrogen from renewable sources replaces hydrogen produced from natural gas. When renewable-based hydrogen is used in a fuel cell vehicle instead of gasoline in a IC engine vehicle, the cost of greenhouse gas emissions reduction approaches the same value as for renewable-based electricity only if the fuel cell vehicle efficiency exceeds significantly (i.e., by about two times) that of an internal combustion vehicle. It is also shown that when 6000 wind turbines (Kenetech KVS-33) with a capacity of 350 kW and a capacity factor of 24% replace a 500-MW gas-fired power plant with an efficiency of 40%, annual greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 2.3 megatons. The incremental additional annual cost is about $280 million (US). The results provide a useful approach to an optimal strategy for greenhouse gas emissions mitigation. 相似文献

The COST/IWA benchmark simulation model has been available for seven years. Its primary purpose has been to create a platform for control strategy benchmarking of biological wastewater treatment processes. The fact that the benchmark has resulted in more than 100 publications, not only in Europe but also worldwide, demonstrates the interest for such a tool in the research community. In this paper, an extension of the benchmark simulation model no. 1 (BSM1) is proposed. It aims at facilitating evaluation of two closely related operational tasks: long-term control strategy performance and process monitoring performance. The motivation for the extension is that these two tasks typically act on longer time scales. The extension proposed here consists of 1) prolonging the evaluation period to one year (including influent files), 2) specifying time varying process parameters and 3) including sensor and actuator failures. The prolonged evaluation period is necessary to obtain a relevant and realistic assessment of the effects of such disturbances. Also, a prolonged evaluation period allows for a number of long-term control actions/handles that cannot be evaluated in a realistic fashion in the one week BSM1 evaluation period. In the paper, models for influent file design, parameter changes and sensor failures, initialization procedure and evaluation criteria are discussed. Important remaining topics, for which consensus is required, are identified. The potential of a long-term benchmark is illustrated with an example of process monitoring algorithm benchmarking. 相似文献

Transfer matrix models have been frequently used to analyze the structural behavior of rods, including curved and pretwisted ones. The advantages of these models include their relative simplicity, numerical efficiency and ease of implementation. Previous investigations did not include nonlinear analyses of curved rods that undergo large deformations. The present paper describes a nonlinear transfer matrix model of curved and pretwisted rods, which is capable of analyzing very large spatial deformations. The rod is divided into segments. A body system of coordinates is attached to each segment. This system translates and rotates with the segment during the deformation. If the segments are kept small enough, the local deformations of each segment, relative to its body system of coordinates, are small. The segments’ systems of coordinates rotate relative to their neighbors and if this rotation is dealt with properly, large rotations and displacement of the curved rod can be analyzed. In spite of its nonlinear nature, the model remains relatively simple and efficient. The new model is used to solve a few problems and the results show very good agreement with other analytical, finite-element, and experimental results. 相似文献

This study investigated whether changes in the technological/social environment in the United States over time have resulted in concomitant changes in the multitasking skills of younger generations. One thousand, three hundred and nineteen Americans from three generations were queried to determine their at-home multitasking behaviors. An anonymous online questionnaire asked respondents to indicate which everyday and technology-based tasks they choose to combine for multitasking and to indicate how difficult it is to multitask when combining the tasks. Combining tasks occurred frequently, especially while listening to music or eating. Members of the “Net Generation” reported more multitasking than members of “Generation X,” who reported more multitasking than members of the “Baby Boomer” generation. The choices of which tasks to combine for multitasking were highly correlated across generations, as were difficulty ratings of specific multitasking combinations. The results are consistent with a greater amount of general multitasking resources in younger generations, but similar mental limitations in the types of tasks that can be multitasked. 相似文献

The role of the Cu–Cl cycle for thermochemical water decomposition, potentially driven by heat from a nuclear power generation station, in producing hydrogen in a sustainable way is investigated by examining efficiencies. The energy efficiency of the cycle is found to be 45% and the exergy efficiency 10%. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the cycle are observed to vary with temperatures of the reactions and reference-environment, and cycle heat losses. The contribution of plastics to the total amount of waste produced is increasing significantly. Not only do plastics present disposal difficulties, but traditional disposal techniques constitute a waste of valuable resources. A process to recycle plastic waste economically would provide an attractive solution to both problems. Approximately 70 percent of the U.S. plastics production is comprised of only three families of plastics; polyethylene, PVC and polystyrene. Mixtures of these three polymers invariably have poor properties because of their thermodynamic incompatibility, so a recycle scheme will have to achieve separation into nearly pure components. A process is proposed which takes advantage of the thermodynamic incompatibility of polymers in solution to effect such a separation. The equilibration of a simulated waste mix containing 4 parts polyolefin (polyethylene and polypropylene), 1 part polystyrene and I part PVC was investigated in a variety of solvents at total polymer concentrations of up to 15 percent, in the temperature range 115 to 125°C, using differential refractometry. In an 85 percent xylene, 15 percent cyclohexanone solvent, the polyolefins (polypropylene and the various densities of polyethylene) coexisted in a single phase, but the three phases obtained—polyolefin, polystyrene and PVC—routinely contained 99 + percent pure polymer, indicating that excellent separations of the major thermoplastic components of a waste mix can indeed be obtained. 相似文献
