Knowing, liking, and judged problem severity in relation to referral and outcome measures in a school-based intervention program.

Teachers, as referral agents, and nonprofessional child aides, as interventionists, rated 709 kindergartners-6th graders seen in a school-based mental health program for how well they were known by teachers and child aides, how much they were liked by them, and how serious their problems were. All evaluation measures derived from 3 instruments--the AML (which measures Acting Out, Moodiness and Withdrawal, and Learning Problems), the Teacher Referral Form, and the Aide Status Evaluation Form. Several interconnected studies describe the ratings' properties and stability, how they differed across demographic groups, and how they related to indexes of referral status, termination status, and improvement. Better liked children and those seen initially as having less severe problems had healthier referral and termination profiles and were judged to have improved more in the program by both rater groups. Comparison of power deposition by in-phase 433 MHz andphase-modulated 915 MHz interstitial antenna array hyperthermia systems

The interstitial microwave antenna array hyperthermia (IMAAH) system produces a pattern of specific absorption rate (SAR) that is nonuniform within a 2-cm square array when driven in phase at 915 MHz. It was found that phase modulation makes the time-averaged SAR pattern significantly more uniform in planes perpendicular to the antennas. To drive antennas in phase at 433 MHz similarly improves SAR uniformity when the antennas are of resonance length     

Food for inefficient thought

Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diets containing 0, 10, 100, 1,000, and 10,000 ppm of methoxychlor for 16 weeks under ad libitum- and restricted-feeding regimens. Methoxychlor at 10,000 ppm was lethal to some rats, reduced food consumption and growth, and increased liver weight relative to body weight. Methoxychlor at 1,000 ppm reduced food consumption and growth of rats fed ad libitum but did not reduce growth of restricted-fed rats. Reduced hepatic storage of vitamin A was detectable when methoxychlor was fed at levels of 100 ppm or higher.     

Fetal cystic lymphangioma (cystic hygroma): prepartum ultrasonic findings

The abnormal prepartum ultrasonic scan in a case of fetal cystic lymphangioma is presented. A large intrauterine cystic mass adjacent to a 23-week-old fetus was identified by ultrasound. After delivery, this was proved to be a cystic lymphangioma extending from the fetal neck and supraclavicular region.     

Determination of organic acids and sugars in loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) by high-pressure liquid chromatography

The major sugars and organic acids in three cultivars of loquat-Tanaka, Thales and Christmas-were quantified by high-pressure liquid chromatography. The cultivars differed in sugar and acid contents and changes in these contents during ripening were determined for one cultivar. Trace quantities of several unknown acids that had not been reported earlier in loquat were observed in the Tanaka sample. Major B-vitamins, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin, were quantified for one cultivar and were at the approximate levels found in other fruit.     

Effects of hydrogen peroxide on lipoproteins and associated lipids

Lipoproteins isolated from human or chimpanzee serum were treated with H₂O₂ and allowed to stand varying lengths of time before quantitative analysis in the ultracentrifuge. Marked instability of ultracentrifugal boundaries (convection) occurred during the first 24 hr, but diminished thereafter. Simultaneously, the quantity of lipoprotein decreased. The instability of boundaries in H₂O₂-treated samples was presumed to reflect loss of lipid-protein affinity and breakdown of lipoproteins under the force of ultracentrifugation. Analysis of extracted lipids showed that H₂O₂ caused little loss of phospholipid, significant loss of triglyceride, and apparent loss of cholesteryl ester. The latter loss, however, was accompanied by appearance of esterified cholesterol in the free cholesterol eluent. Apparently H₂O₂ converted some cholesteryl esters to a more polar form which was eluted later from the column, with the free cholesterol fraction. Gas chromatographic analysis of the fractions eluted from the column showed that selective degradation of polyunsaturated fatty acids was most marked with cholesteryl esters, somewhat less with triglycerides, and negligible with phospholipids. It was postulated that the loss of lipid-protein affinity caused by H₂O₂ in vitro may reflect a similar process in vivo, i.e., that one process contributing to development of atherosclerosis can be oxidation of lipoprotein, with loss of lipid-protein affinity and accumulation of lipid products in (or on) cells of the vascular system. Graphs of the density for several values ofNand two signal-noise ratios are presented and discussed.
