Nuclear distribution in Alternaria tenuis

Renal functional abnormalities constituting the syndrome of postobstructive diuresis imply both altered tubular and glomerular membrane properties. To determine the morphologic and ultrastructural correlates of this disorder a rat model was developed and 32 postobstructed kidneys were studied by light and electron microscopy at the midpoint of diuresis and compared to 22 controls. The abnormal morphology was: dilated distal tubules and collecting ducts, isolated proximal and distal tubule cells that allowed free access of luminal contents to the basement membrane, widened terminal bars and intercellular spaces, thickening of the glomerular basement membrane and, depending upon the portion of nephron, normal or reduced adenosine triphosphatase and acid phosphatase content. In order to confirm the functional nature of the nephrons studied as well as to assess glomerular and tubular permeability, horseradish peroxidase and cytochrome c were infused. These tracers, normally permeable to the glomerular basement membrane, were found in the intercellular spaces and to a lesser extent within cell organelles in the postobstructed diuretic animals whereas controls demonstrated a retarded filtration of horseradish peroxidase, no tracer in the intercellular spaces and large amounts of tracer contained within cell organelles. Absence of enzyme activity in the medulla and reduced dark to light cell ratios in the cortical collecting ducts correlated with prior observations made by others of diminished concentration and acidification processes, respectively. An increase in adenosine triphosphatase activity and renin granules within the juxtaglomerular cells indicated increased renin activity. These observations suggest that the renal functional abnormalities of postobstructive diuresis are attributable to altered glomerular and tubular permeabilities as well as with changes in metabolic activity.     

Josephson junctions as self-oscillating mixers at 34 GHz

Adjustable point-contact Josephson junctions have been used as self-oscillating mixers at 34 GHz, with an intermediate frequency of 300 MHz. The average conversion loss was about 18 dB, but mismatch losses and waveguide losses may amount to 10 dB at present.     

Mechanical properties of glassy carbon fibres derived from phenolic resin

Mechanical properties of glassy carbon fibres produced from a phenolic resin were determined by static tensile testing. These specimens are of special interest because they consist of an isotropic core surrounded by a sheath of oriented material of varying relative thickness. The chemistry of pyrolysis of the resin is summarized and the changes in mechanical properties of the fibres are discussed in terms of the pyrolysis mechanisms. The results are compared with hardness measurements made on discs produced from the same starting material. Scanning electron microscope studies revealed that the fibres have various types of flaws both in the surface and in the core. The effect of these flaws on the fibre strength is discussed by applying Griffith crack theory.     

Subdoctoral education in psychology: A study of issues and attitudes.

Discusses several psychological conferences and committee's attitudes toward the desirability of "programs to train for psychological service at less than the doctoral level." 7 central areas of contention concerning subdoctoral training are (1) type of training, (2) level of training, (3) responsibility for training, (4) locus of training, (5) degree and/or title, (6) roles and duties, and (7) implications for psychology. The 7 issues served as the basis of the specific questions in a large scale survey. The sample (N = 4308) included American Psychological Association members of the Clinical, School, and Counseling Divisions of Psychology and chairmen of graduate departments of psychology. Results indicate that "the large majority of psychologists recognize the need for and approve the training of people at less than the doctoral level to do psychological work." FACTORS DESCRIPTIVE OF PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AND BEHAVIOR OF HOSPITALIZED PSYCHOTICS.

The dietary potential of the common nettle

A leaf protein concentrate prepared from the young leaves of the common nettle (Urtica dioica) failed to support normal growth in young rats; supplementation with methionine produced a protein efficiency ratio greater than that of casein. A nettle leaf wholemeal, providing 66% of the dietary protein, supported normal growth in young guinea-pigs, mice and rats. Chicks receiving the whole nettle meal as their sole dietary protein grew at only half the rate of chicks given a standard commercial diet. A nettle meal-induced hypercholesterolaemia in mature guinea-pigs and kidney hypertrophy in mice and guinea-pigs should perhaps be interpreted as a caution against the indiscriminate introduction of nettles into the human diet.
