Standardized observations: An approach to measuring the nature of jobs.

Determined the usefulness of standardized job observations by training 35 college students to observe the characteristics of jobs. A total of 448 employees of an automobile parts manufacturer, a printing concern, and a hospital were observed for 2 hrs and were also interviewed. The observation measures were assessed to determine if they possessed repeatability, homogeneity, and convergence. Of the 19 job dimensions studied, 11 demonstrated repeatability and homogeneity. 6 of the dimensions were tested for convergence with the interview data, and 4 showed moderate convergence. It is concluded that job observations are a potentially useful way to measure the characteristics of jobs, but that they have significant limitations. Cardiopulmonary function studies at rest and during submaximal and maximal exercise were performed in 21 children and adolescents who had undergone surgical correction of tetralogy of Fallot. Maximal oxygen uptake of the patients was 84.6% of healthy peers matched for age and height. The reduced aerobic capacity can mainly be attributed to a reduction in stroke volume. In the presence of a reduced stroke volume normal cardiac output during submaximal exercise was achieved and maintained by an increase in heart rate. During maximal exercise, however, the heart rate did not exceed that of the healthy controls and the results for the children in this series are about 20% higher than those reported in the literature for adults who had undergone surgical repair of a tetralogy. Persistent impairment of cardiac function in patients with tetralogy of Fallot who have undergone corrective surgery may represent a residual outflow tract obstruction in the right ventricle, impaired function of the left ventricle or the result of restricted physical activity.     

Effect of anti-insulin serum on the hepatic lipid metabolism of BHE rats

Vascular injury or occlusion from intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) that results in actual or potential limb ischemia occurs more frequently than reported. In a series of 79 IABP patients, 36 lived long enough to have the balloon catheter removed; thirteen (36%) of them had vascular complications. The complications were in three patients with an injury at the insertion site, eight patients with arterial thromboses, and two with arterial occlusion by the large balloon catheter. Local artery revision, thrombectomy alone, or thrombectomy with femorofemoral cross-over grafting was required in 11 patients. Femorofemoral crossover graft was utilized when arterial occlusion would have ordinarily required premature balloon removal or when immediate arterial occlusion by the catheter was recognized at the time of balloon insertion. This was preferable to transferring, replacing, or discontinuing IABP, since the same factors that led to thrombosis in the first place would have eventually come into play again. Patients should be observed frequently and have Doppler limb pulse determinations every four hours to avoid ischemic catastrophies. Proper IABP weaning and the use of a Fogarty catheter at the time of balloon removal is mandatory to prevent complications. Femorofemoral crossover graft is indicated for ischemic limbs when IABP must be continued.     

Static equilibrium configurations of a model red blood cell

The membrane of the red blood cell is modeled as a fluid shell which resists bending and changes in area. The differential equations governing the mechanical equilibrium of such a membrane are derived and axisymmetric solutions are obtained numerically.
