Nuclear distribution in Alternaria tenuis

Renal functional abnormalities constituting the syndrome of postobstructive diuresis imply both altered tubular and glomerular membrane properties. To determine the morphologic and ultrastructural correlates of this disorder a rat model was developed and 32 postobstructed kidneys were studied by light and electron microscopy at the midpoint of diuresis and compared to 22 controls. The abnormal morphology was: dilated distal tubules and collecting ducts, isolated proximal and distal tubule cells that allowed free access of luminal contents to the basement membrane, widened terminal bars and intercellular spaces, thickening of the glomerular basement membrane and, depending upon the portion of nephron, normal or reduced adenosine triphosphatase and acid phosphatase content. In order to confirm the functional nature of the nephrons studied as well as to assess glomerular and tubular permeability, horseradish peroxidase and cytochrome c were infused. These tracers, normally permeable to the glomerular basement membrane, were found in the intercellular spaces and to a lesser extent within cell organelles in the postobstructed diuretic animals whereas controls demonstrated a retarded filtration of horseradish peroxidase, no tracer in the intercellular spaces and large amounts of tracer contained within cell organelles. Absence of enzyme activity in the medulla and reduced dark to light cell ratios in the cortical collecting ducts correlated with prior observations made by others of diminished concentration and acidification processes, respectively. An increase in adenosine triphosphatase activity and renin granules within the juxtaglomerular cells indicated increased renin activity. These observations suggest that the renal functional abnormalities of postobstructive diuresis are attributable to altered glomerular and tubular permeabilities as well as with changes in metabolic activity.     

Analysis of the temperature dependence of the fracture stress of sharp notched bending specimens of a structural steel with respect to intermediate transitions

The flow and fracture stresses, σ_y^g and σ_f^g (δ = crack tip displacement), of sharply notched bending specimens of a structural steel U St 37-1 are measured in the temperature range from full scale to small scale yielding. The best adaption of the experimental results for σ_f^g is obtained by a curve which exhibits an intermediate transition, i.e. which follows in a temperature range between an upper, T_tM¹ and a lower, T_tl¹, transition temperature to the curve σ_y^g(T) for the flow stress with a constant δ = δ₁. This transition corresponds to that of the slip to the twin nucleated fracture. Two analyses [3,5] according to the local fracture stress, σ_f^*, concept show that the amount and the temperature dependence of σ_f^* are somewhat different for both methods, but that both exhibit an increase of σ_f^* in the transition range. It is concluded that each transition in the nucleation mode of the fracture is connected with such a transition in the fracture stress. It may, however, become indistinct or even be covered by the scatter of the experimental points.     

Ermittlung der dynamischen Werkstoffkonstanten von bituminös gebundenen Baustoffen

The evaluation of the dynamical properties of bituminous mixtures An experimental method for the evaluation of the dynamical properties of bituminous mixtures is presented. Because of their viscoelastic behaviour the design of a special testing device was necessary. In this paper the guiding ideas for this testing machine are developed. Moreover, some experimental results and experiences, which could be valuable for calculating the stresses in road constructions, are given.     

Overselectivity, developmental level, and overtraining in autistic and normal children

Thirteen autistic children were compared to 13 normal children matched to them in mental age, on performance of a visual discrimination task. Form, color, and size were relevant and redundant cues. The groups did not differ significantly in mean trials to reach criterion or in breadth of learning, and both groups increased their breadth of learning after 50 trials of overtraining. Form was preferred to color and size by both autistic and normal children. Within each group, rank on mental age was highly correlated with rank in breadth of learning. Verbal and nonverbal autistic children did not differ in breadth of learning or in dimensional preference. Even nonverbal autistics equaled the performance of their normal controls. Our results suggest that overselective attention is better understood as part of a general developmental lag in cognition in autistic children than as a specific deficit underlying psychotic behavior.     

n-Channel Si-gate process for MNOS EEPROM transistors

An n-channel Si-gate process has been developed to fabricate MNOS EEPROM transistors and fast logic circuits on one chip. The technology proposed involves low thermal oxidation temperatures ≤900°C after nitride deposition, two LOCOS process steps and application of self-aligned overlapped poly-Si contacts. The MNOS memory transistors obtained have been programmed by ±25 V pulses with a write time of t_w = 10 ms and an erase time of t_e = 100 ms.The retention data have been found to be dependent on nitride thickness and threshold voltage shift, but independent of channel length and channel doping. For devices with a nitride thickness of 30.5 nm the short-term decay rate of 0.6 V/(decade of time) has been determined. Endurance testing using up to 10⁷ pulses of ±25 V, 100 μs corresponding to approx. 10⁴ write/erase cycles showed no time dependence for the decay rate over the time of 10⁵ min in which retention measurements were made.     

Theoretical and numerical aspects of transmit SENSE

The ideas of parallel imaging techniques, designed to shorten the acquisition time by the simultaneous use of multiple receive coils, can be adapted for parallel transmission of a spatially selective multidimensional RF pulse. In analogy to data acquisition, a multidimensional RF pulse follows a certain trajectory in k-space. Shortening this trajectory shortens the pulse duration. The use of multiple transmit coils, each with its own time-dependent waveform and spatial sensitivity, compensates for the missing parts of k-space. This results in a maintained spatial definition of the pulse profile while its duration is reduced. This paper describes the basic equations of parallel transmission with arbitrarily shaped transmit coils ("Transmit SENSE") focusing on two-dimensional RF pulses. Results of numerical studies are presented demonstrating the theoretical feasibility of the approach.
