An association between varicella zoster virus (VZV) and multiple sclerosis (MS) has been reported in Mexican populations. The aim of this study was to compare the response of T cells from MS patients, during relapse and remission, to in vitro stimulation with VZV, adenovirus (AV) and Epstein–Barr virus (EBV). Proliferation and cytokine secretion of T cells from 29 relapsing-remitting MS patients and 38 healthy controls (HC) were analyzed by flow cytometry after stimulating with VZV, AV or EBV. IgG and IgM levels against VZV and EBV were quantified using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay. Relapsing MS patients showed a higher percentage of responding CD4+ and CD8+ T cells against VZV compared to AV. In HC and remitting MS patients, proliferation of CD4+ T cells was higher when stimulated with VZV as compared to EBV. Moreover, T cells isolated from remitting patients secreted predominantly Th1 cytokines when cell cultures were stimulated with VZV. Finally, high concentration of anti-VZV IgG was found in sera from patients and controls. The results support previous studies of an VZV-MS association in the particular population studied and provide additional information about the possible role of this virus in the pathogenesis of MS. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to apply mathematical expressions commonly used in the analysis of mass-transfer processes to the study of the cod desalting operation to be able to predict the changes suffered by cod during the process. The NaCl concentration in the cod liquid phase at equilibrium was well predicted by using a mass balance. It was observed that the changes in the cod liquid phase concentration and the total weight changes throughout the process could be predicted by using a pseudo-diffusional approach or a biexponential equation, whereas a linear relation was observed between the NaCl cod liquid phase concentration and the cod density. 相似文献

Lactic acid bacteria are the most adequate microorganisms for natural preservation of food. In the present work, the strain of Enterococcus faecalis CECT7121 was employed in the manufacture of craft dry-fermented sausages and its performance as a biopreservative was analysed. This strain is devoid of the genes for haemolysin and gelatinase and does not produce biogenic amines. It is sensitive to almost all the antibiotics tested and opsonophagocytic assays showed that it is devoid of a capsule. This strain had a high LD50 (10(11)CFU ml(-1)) in mice. No statistical differences were found between control and sausages inoculated with E. faecalis CECT7121 regarding the production of lactic acid, pH variation over time, reaching a minimum pH value of 5.1, and sensory analysis in both series. Sausages inoculated with E. faecalis CECT7121 had lower viable counts of Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus aureus and other Gram-positive cocci at the end of fermentation and 7 days and no viable enterobacteria and S. aureus were recovered at the end of drying. E. faecalis CECT7121 did not affect the growth of Lactobacillus spp. but it displaced the autochthonous populations of enterococci. E. faecalis CECT7121 was recovered in each time point as assessed by its inhibitory activity on Listeria monocytogenes and S. aureus. These results would indicate that the addition of E. faecalis CECT7121 during the manufacture of craft dry-fermented sausages offers an interesting alternative for biopreservation. 相似文献

Summary
Using capillary zone electrophoresis has made characterizations of different copolymers obtained via zwitterionic polymerization.
Results demonstrate that this technique is able to put into evidence the molecular heterogeneity of the different copolymers.
Analyses were performed in less than 10 minutes using a borate buffer. To our knowledge this the first time that free-zone

The synthesis and the biological evaluation of a new family diterpenes are presented. The synthetic studies were inspired by the structural framework of acanthoic acid (1) and yielded a family of compounds that were evaluated as anti-inflammatory agents. Among them, compounds 2, 10, 12, and 16 exhibited a very low nonspecific cytotoxicity and inhibited the synthesis of TNF-alpha with greater than 65 % efficacy at low micromolar concentrations. Cytokine-specificity studies revealed that these compounds also inhibited the synthesis of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1beta and IL-6, while inhibition of IL-1ra and IL-8 synthesis was marginal and only occurred at high concentrations. Further studies, through EMSA and Western blot analyses, indicated that these compounds decreased the extent of phosphorylation of IkappaBalpha; this suggests that they exert their anti-inflammatory profile by inhibiting NF-kappaB-mediated cytokine synthesis. These findings imply that these diterpenes represent promising leads for the development of novel anti-inflammatory agents. 相似文献

Estolides are a group of FA polyesters resulting from ester bond formation between a hydroxyl or olefinic group of one FA
and the terminal carboxyl group of a second FA. These products are commonly found in trace amounts, forming tetraglycerides
in several oil seed plants, and have been produced by acid clay and enzymatic catalysis in vitro. In this study, natural estolides produced by a bacterial culture are presented for the first time. Pseudomonas sp. 42A2 produced (E)-10-hydroxy-8-octadecenoic acid and (E)-7,10-dihydroxy-8-octadecenoic acid when grown on oleic acid. It is suggested that these FA were polymerized in culture by
a lipase produced by the bacterial strain, resulting in a mixture of estolides. These compounds amounted to 3.8 g/L after
72 h of incubation. LC-MS analysis indicated that the types of estolides formed were dimers (m/z 560–610), trimers (m/z 845–906), tetramers (m/z 1122–1202), pentamers (m/z 1328–1424), and hexamers (m/z 1554–1788), with a relative abundance of 27.5, 19.4, 15, 9.7, and 11%, respectively. The electrochemical oxidation of 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol aqueous wastes using boron-doped diamond electrodes was studied. This treatment led to complete mineralization of the wastes regardless of the operating conditions. A simple mechanistic model is consistent with the voltammetric and electrolysis results. According to this model, the electrochemical treatment of chlorophenol aqueous wastes involves the anodic and cathodic release of chlorine followed by the formation of non-chlorinated aromatic intermediates. Subsequent cleavage of the aromatic ring gives rise to non-chlorinated carboxylic acids. Chlorine atoms arising from the hydrodehalogenation of the chlorophenols are converted into more oxidized molecules at the anode. These molecules react with unsaturated C4 carboxylic acid to finally yield trichloroacetic acid through a haloform reaction. The non-chlorinated organic acids are ultimately oxidized to carbon dioxide and the trichloroacetic acid into carbon dioxide and volatile organo-chlorinated molecules. Both direct and mediated electrochemical oxidation processes are involved in the electrochemical treatment of chlorophenols. 相似文献
