Reproductive tracts and spermatozoa from reproductively active and reproductively suppressed non-breeding males from two species of eusocial African mole-rats Cryptomys damarensis and Heterocephalus glaber were examined. In two captive colonies of Heterocephalus glaber, reproductive tracts from seven non-breeding males removed from their colonies, and housed singly for 5-6 weeks to cause reproductive activation, were compared with reproductive tracts from seven non-breeding males. The body weight of the separated, reproductively active males increased significantly (P < 0.01), and the mean testis weights relative to body weight of the reproductively active males were significantly larger (P < 0.05) than those of non-breeding males. The number of spermatozoa, in one half of the reproductive tract, was higher in active males than in non-breeding males (mean +/- SEM: 8.59 x 10(6) +/- 2.69 x 10(6) versus 1.78 x 10(6) +/- 1.43 x 10(6), respectively; P < 0.05). In addition, six of the seven reproductively active males, but only two of seven non-breeding males, had motile spermatozoa. A total of 28 wild Cryptomys damarensis from two colonies were examined in the field. The testis weights relative to body weight of breeding males (n = 7) were higher than those of non-breeding males (n = 19; P < 0.01), but the number of spermatozoa did not differ significantly between the two groups (0.13 x 10(6) +/- 0.06 x 10(6), n = 7 versus 0.29 x 10(6) +/- 0.14 x 10(6), n = 21, respectively). This article reviews the first experience using the Siemens Lithostar Multiline lithotripter in 372 consecutive treatments of ureteric and kidney stones. The disintegration rate was 97.7%, and a stone-free rate of 87% was achieved at the end of 3 months. Auxillary procedures were required in only 11% of the patients. No medication was required for pain management in 60.4% of the patients. The results were especially impressive in the management of ureteric stones, with a success rate of 91%, these patients being stone free after 1 week using the new booster technique. Analysis of the data indicates that the Siemens Lithostar Multiline is a safe, effective, and economically sound device to treat patients with ureteric and renal stones. 相似文献

Status epilepticus in immature rats. Protective effects of glucose on survival and brain development
The role of glucose metabolism in alleviating the complications of status epilepticus (SE) was investigated in developing rats. Pretreatment with glucose reduced mortality from SE by 90% in rats under 1 week of age, 80% in 10-day-old rats, 50% in 15- to 20-day-olds, and not at all in adults. In 4-day-old animals, brain DNA synthesis during seizures, and in survivors, brain weight, DNA, RNA, protein, and cholesterol contents at 7 days of age were reduced less in glucose-treated than in saline-treated littermates. In the saline group, seizures caused a progressive fall in brain glucose level but no fall in blood glucose level, suggesting that glucose transport from blood to brain could not keep pace with glycolytic demands. In glucose-treated rats, blood and brain glucose concentrations remained elevated throughout the convulsive period. There was no reduction of brain adenosine triphosphate levels in either group. Thus, the protection by glucose appears to be related to its roles as a carbon source rather than an energy source. It is concluded that in immature animals, depletion of brain glucose can occur in the absence of hypoglycemia, and may be an important and potentially treatable complication of status epilepticus. 相似文献

The proteinaceous shells of Centropyxis hirsuta contain a relatively high concentration of manganese in an amorphous state. The concentrations of manganese fill the alveoli which are characteristic of the shell structure. Observations based on cultured animals and subsequently examined by X-ray diffraction, a solid state energy dispersive X-ray analyser, and an analytical electron microscope, lead to the conclusions that manganese is selectively absorbed by Centropyxis hirsuta and deposited in the shell. 相似文献

In whold-mount preparations of the organ of Corti nerve fibers are sometimes seen peripheral to the third-row outer hair cells where they appear to wander among the Hensen cells. These fibers were studied in the guinea pig by both light and electron microscopy. In the upper second, third and fourth cochlear turns nerve fibers were seen between and on the peripheral side of the third-row Deiters cells as well as in the floor of the outer tunnel space. They were not found in the intercellular spaces between the Hensen cells. These nerve fibers are continuous with the spiral efferent fibers beneath the outer hair cells. Also their ultrastructural and histochemical characteristics indicate that they are efferent neural elements. This identification was confirmed by the finding that they degenerate following interruption of the olivo-cochlear bundle in the brain stem. 相似文献

Gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (G3C-EAD) experiments showed that antennae of males and females of the goldeneyed lacewing, Chrysopa oculata Say (Co. = Chrysopa), consistently responded to four compounds extracted from the abdominal cuticle of males:nonanal, nonanol, nonanoic acid, and (1R*,2S*,5R*,8R*)-iridodial. These compounds were not detected from abdominal cuticle of females. Thoracic extracts of both sexes contained antennal-stimulatory 1-tridecene and EAD-inactive skatole. Chrysopa oculata adults were most sensitive to (1R,2S,5R,8R)-iridodial standard at an EAD-response threshold between 0.1 and 1 pg, which was 10-100 times lower than thresholds for nonanal and nonanoic acid, and up to 10,000 times lower than thresholds for other compounds tested. A similar EAD response pattern was also found in another Chrysopa sp. (Co. quadripunctata Burmeister). In field-trapping experiments, (1R,2S,5R,8R)-iridodial was the only male-specific compound that attracted Co. oculata males. Males also were weakly attracted to (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol (an aphid sex pheromone component), probably due to the 5% (1R,2S,5R,8R)-iridodial present in the synthetic sample as an impurity. A herbivore-induced plant volatile, methyl salicylate, increased attraction of males to (1R,2S,5R,8R)-iridodial, whereas 1-tridecene was antagonistic. No females were caught in the entire study. Scanning electron micrographs revealed numerous male-specific, elliptical epidermal glands on the 3rd-8th abdominal sternites of Co. oculata, which are likely the pheromone glands. Another lacewing species, Chrysoperla rufilabris (Burmeister) (Cl. = Chrysoperla), did not produce male-specific volatiles or possess the type of gland presumed to produce pheromone in Co. oculata males, but (Z)-4-tridecene was identified as a major antennal-stimulatory compound from thoracic extracts of both sexes of Cl. rufilabris. Thus, (1R,2S,5R,8R)-iridodial (or its enantiomer) is now identified as a male-produced male aggregation pheromone for Co. oculata, the first pheromone identified for lacewings. 相似文献

A practical and convenient method for the synthesis of acid- and base-sensitive GTP analogues carrying a further substituent at the terminal phosphate has been developed. Key to the successful synthesis of these potential ligands of the Ras protein is the use of Pd0-sensitive allyl protecting groups in a one-pot synthesis that avoids evaporation steps. Initial biochemical analysis of a representative compound revealed that such GTP analogues can bind to Ras and might open up the possibility of developing small molecules that can act as deactivators of oncogenic Ras. 相似文献
