Fluorescence lifetimes of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The flucrescence decay of Chlorella pyrenoidosa has been investigated under a variety of conditions in the picosecond and nanosecond time regions. Most of the fluorescence is accounted for by an expression of the form I(t) = I0exp-(At+Bt1/2) though an additional exponential term is required to include a weak component of lifetime 32 ps observable only at the higher pulse intensities. This interpretation reconciles earlier and apparently conflicting data. The weak 32 ps component may be associated with Photosystem I, although the possibility that it is an artefact of the high intensity pulses used cannot be excluded at present. The main fluorescence, described by the equation above is attributed to the antenna chlorophyll and is of the form which would be expected from a single light harvesting array with trapping at randomly distributed sites.     

Mitral valve area in combined mitral stenosis and regurgitation

Eight patients with mixed mitral stenosis and regurgitation underwent hemodynamic and angiographic study prior to mitral valve replacement. The stenotic orifice of the mitral valve was calculated employing the total left ventricular stroke volume by cineangiography as the numerator of the Gorlin Formula. Excellent agreement with the measured orifice of the mitral valve was obtained using a value of 37.9 (0.85 X 44.5) for the constant in the Gorlin formula as recommended by Cohen and Gorlin. Recalculation of this constant independently by our data yielded a value that was almost identical. Regurgitant flows and orifice sizes were calculated for each patient using the same constant as for calculation of the stenotic orifices.     

Defective interfering passages of Sindbis virus: nature of the defective virion RNA

Defective interfering particles of Sindbis virus contain 20S RNA identical to that found in BHK cells co-infected with standard and defective virions. We have characterized these RNAs by their oligonucleotide fingerprints. Most of the oligonucleotides were identical to those found in the mRNA (26S RNA) that codes for the virion structural proteins. Three oligonucleotides found in 20S RNA were absent from the 26S RNA pattern and may represent sequences from the 5' end of the virion RNA. Previous difficulties in describing the nature of the defective virion RNA were due to the aggregated state of the RNA. Nucleocapsids obtained from standard and defective virions were essentially the same size and had about the same density, suggesting that defective particles contain more than a single molecule of 20S RNA.     

A Ternary-associating system of genes

A significant association is described between genes of the erythrocyte acid phosphatase (ACP1B), erythrocyte adenosine deaminase (ADA2) and plasma haptoglobin (Hp2) systems. Most of the heterogeneity is shown to reside in the ADA2-Hp2 association and in the ACP1B-Hp2 association among persons of type ADA 1.
