Unsaturated carboxylic acids are usually used as functional monomers at low concentrations in emulsion polymerization to improve the colloidal stability and the mechanical properties of the films prepared from the corresponding latexes. These acids are distributed between the aqueous and organic phases to different extents due to their various water solubilities. The partitioning behavior of two new vinyl acids, monobutyl itaconate (MBI) and β‐carboxyethyl acrylate (β‐CEA), between n‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) and the water phases was studied in this work. In addition, the partitioning of commonly used acrylic acid (AA) and methacrylic acid (MAA) was also determined as a benchmark. It was found that the partition coefficients (D) of MBI and β‐CEA depended to a large extent on the acid concentration in the total comonomer mixture; the same trends were observed for AA and MAA. With the variation in monomer to water ratio (M/W), the D value of lipophilic acid MBI changed significantly, while for hydrophilic acid β‐CEA, the D value changed very little. Furthermore, the values of the partition coefficient of MBI and β‐CEA were very strong functions of pH, decreasing rapidly as the pH is increased. On the other hand, temperature has little effect on the partition coefficients for vinyl acids under typical emulsion polymerization reaction conditions. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. In 1973, Oregon adopted a statewide comprehensive land use management program. It represents an important new approach in land use control and merits careful consideration and examination by land use analysts, policy makers, and the public. By providing statewide standards for land use planning and implementation carried out through an ongoing local administrative process, an important state land use management role has been established and, many argue, without a substantial erosion of local flexibility.

Rural land use management, particularly farmland protection, is an important component of the Oregon program. The combination of state mandated, locally implemented urban growth boundary designations and exclusive farm use zoning represents a unique case in farmland protection policy. The performance of the program is evaluated, and economic trade-offs in the selection of minimum lot size standards are discussed. This program offers the promise of substantially improving rural land use management in Oregon at a modest cost to the public sector.  相似文献

Microglial interaction with amyloid fibrils in the brains of Alzheimer's and prion disease patients results in the inflammatory activation of these cells. We observed that primary microglial cultures and the THP-1 monocytic cell line are stimulated by fibrillar beta-amyloid and prion peptides to activate identical tyrosine kinase-dependent inflammatory signal transduction cascades. The tyrosine kinases Lyn and Syk are activated by the fibrillar peptides and initiate a signaling cascade resulting in a transient release of intracellular calcium that results in the activation of classical PKC and the recently described calcium-sensitive tyrosine kinase PYK2. Activation of the MAP kinases ERK1 and ERK2 follows as a subsequent downstream signaling event. We demonstrate that PYK2 is positioned downstream of Lyn, Syk, and PKC. PKC is a necessary intermediate required for ERK activation. Importantly, the signaling response elicited by beta-amyloid and prion fibrils leads to the production of neurotoxic products. We have demonstrated in a tissue culture model that conditioned media from beta-amyloid- and prion-stimulated microglia or from THP-1 monocytes are neurotoxic to mouse cortical neurons. This toxicity can be ameliorated by treating THP-1 cells with specific enzyme inhibitors that target various components of the signal transduction pathway linked to the inflammatory responses.  相似文献

Spline curves are useful in a variety of geometric modeling and graphics applications and covering problems abound in practical settings. This work defines a class of covering decision problems for shapes bounded by spline curves. As a first step in addressing these problems, this paper treats translational spline covering for planar, uniform, cubic B‐splines. Inner and outer polygonal approximations to the spline regions are generated using enclosures that are inside two different types of piecewise‐linear envelopes. Our recent polygonal covering technique is then applied to seek translations of the covering shapes that allow them to fully cover the target shape. A feasible solution to the polygonal instance provides a feasible solution to the spline instance. We use our recent proof that 2D translational polygonal covering is NP‐hard to establish NP‐hardness of our planar translational spline covering problem. Our polygonal approximation strategy creates approximations that are tight, yet the number of vertices is only a linear function of the number of control points. Using recent results on B‐spline curve envelopes, we bound the distance from the spline curve to its approximation. We balance the two competing objectives of tightness vs. number of points in the approximation, which is crucial given the NP‐hardness of the spline problem. Examples of the results of our spline covering work are provided for instances containing as many as six covering shapes, including both convex and nonconvex regions. Our implementation uses the LEDA and CGAL C++ libraries of geometric data structures and algorithms.  相似文献

The infrarenal abdominal aorta is particularly prone to atherosclerotic plaque formation while the thoracic aorta is relatively resistant. Localized differences in hemodynamic conditions, including differences in velocity profiles, wall shear stress, and recirculation zones have been implicated in the differential localization of disease in the infrarenal aorta. A comprehensive computational framework was developed, utilizing a stabilized, time accurate, finite element method, to solve the equations governing blood flow in a model of a normal human abdominal aorta under simulated rest, pulsatile, flow conditions. Flow patterns and wall shear stress were computed. A recirculation zone was observed to form along the posterior wall of the infrarenal aorta. Low time-averaged wall shear stress and high shear stress temporal oscillations, as measured by an oscillatory shear index, were present in this location, along the posterior wall opposite the superior mesenteric artery and along the anterior wall between the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries. These regions were noted to coincide with a high probability-of-occurrence of sudanophilic lesions as reported by Cornhill et al. (Monogr. Atheroscler. 15:13-19, 1990). This numerical investigation provides detailed quantitative data on hemodynamic conditions in the abdominal aorta heretofore lacking in the study of the localization of atherosclerotic disease.  相似文献

Domestic sheep were intradermally inoculated with culture-derived stationary phase Leishmania donovani promastigotes. Sampling of site of inoculation, liver and spleen for 244 days showed that this parasite can stay alive in the skin for up to 28 days post-inoculation. Apart from pyrexia that was evident in all the animals for 42 days, no other symptoms of kala-azar were seen. No parasites were recovered from the visceral organs throughout the sampling period, suggesting that sheep are not susceptible to infection with L. donovani. It is therefore unlikely that sheep can be synanthropic reservoirs for this parasite.  相似文献

Expression of retinoblastoma (Rb) protein was immunohistochemically examined in laryngeal squamous cell neoplasias from 72 patients. Staining patterns were considered with reference to such prognostic factors as patient's age, histologic grade, tumour size and lymph node status, and 5-year survival rate. Rb protein negativity, either partial or complete, was noted in 28.8% of cases and was associated with a significantly lower 5-year survival rate, as well as with a higher likelihood of lymph node metastasis. This suggests that Rb alteration may be a prognostic indicator in patients with laryngeal carcinoma.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial neurotoxins have been implicated in animal deaths resulting from drinking contaminated water. Anatoxin-a (AN) and homoanatoxin-a (HMAN) have previously been analysed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection, but this procedure is insufficiently sensitive and is subject to interferences. A sensitive fluorimetric (FL) method for determining AN was recently developed using derivatisation with 4-fluoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD-F) and this has been applied to the simultaneous determination of AN, HMAN and their epoxy and dihydro degradation products. Microscale syntheses were used to prepare the dihydro and epoxy derivatives from AN and HMAN. These compounds were produced in high yields, as confirmed by electrospray MS and HPLC-FL of their benzoxadiazole derivatives. All six NBD derivatives were readily separated using isocratic reversed-phase HPLC. The recoveries of these compounds from spiked water samples, using weak cation-exchange (WCX) solid-phase extraction (SPE), were 83.2-84.9% at concentrations of 10 micrograms/l. The R.S.D. values were 1.7-3.9% (n = 8) and the limits of detection were better than 10 ng/l for all six compounds, illustrating the high sensitivity of the method. This methodology was successfully applied to the analysis toxin degradation products in natural samples. Dihydroanatoxin-a (0.8 mg/g) was isolated from a benthic Oscillatoria bloom from Caragh Lake, Ireland, and was found to contain two isomers but their ratio was different from that found in the synthetic material.  相似文献
