Use of human visual attention cues by olive baboons (Papio anubis) in a competitive task.

The ability of 4 olive baboons (Papio anubis) to use human gaze cues during a competitive food task was investigated. Three baboons used head orientation as a cue, and 1 individual also used eye direction alone. As the baboons did not receive prior training with gestural cuts, their performance suggests that the competitive paradigm may be more appropriate for testing nonhuman primates than the standard object-choice paradigm. However, the baboons were insensitive to whether the experimenter could actually perceive the food item, and therefore the use of visual orientation cues may not be indicative of visual perspective-taking abilities. Performance was disrupted by the introduction of a screen and objects to conceal food items and by the absence of movement in cues presented. Electron pumping through quantum dots defined in parallel etched quantum wires

We present the first results on electron transport through a tuneable-barrier double quantum dot electron pump. This device could yield twice the current to a single-dot pump previously reported [M.D. Blumenthal, B. Kaestner, L. Li, S. Giblin, , T.J.B.M. Janssen, M. Pepper, D. Anderson, G. Jones, D.A. Ritchie, Gigahertz quantized charge pumping, Nat. Phys. 3 (2007) 343], at the same operating frequency. The two quantum wires forming the device were not sufficiently homogeneous for pumping to be observed through both dots simultaneously, but sufficient homogeneity should be attainable in future batches of devices.     

Use of Water as a Solvent in Directing Hydrogenation Reactions of Aromatic Acids over Pd/carbon Nanofibre Catalysts

By conducting the catalytic hydrogenation over water miscible Pd/carbon nanofibre catalysts, selective ring hydrogenation of aromatic acids can be performed in aqueous solution without the need to provide protection for the external acid function.     

The Kapitza resistance to a variety of metallic surfaces below 0.3 K

The Kapitza resistance has been measured between liquid or solid ³ He or ⁴ He and surfaces of Mg, Cu, W, and Au in the temperature range 0.03–0.3 K. The experimental data are in relatively good agreement with the acoustic mismatch theory modified so as to include phonon attenuation in the metal. Below ～0.1 K the Kapitza resistance of liquid ³ He is often reduced relative to that of liquid ⁴ He, suggesting the presence of an enhanced thermal conduction between liquid ³ He and metals as has been observed in other laboratories.     

Dietary patterns vs. dietary recommendations: Identifying the gaps for complex carbohydrate

Dietary guidelines of the U.S. and Canada recommend that 55% of dietary calories of individuals should come from carbohydrates, especially complex carbohydrates. However, they generally fail to describe how much should come from complex carbohydrates. Undoubtedly, this is because of confusion about the composition of complex carbohydrate foods and incomplete knowledge of the health benefits of all components of grain products. With the intent of shifting dietary food selection to increase carbohydrate consumption above the current 46% of calories, food guides recommend 5 to 12 servings per day from grain products. Current estimated intake for adults is between four to five servings of grain products, of which less than one is from whole grain, in an average 2000‐kcal adult diet. To follow the advice of the U.S. Food Guide Pyramid, which suggests half the bread (grains) group should be whole‐grain products, adult Americans should increase their intake of whole‐grain products four‐ to fivefold and double their intake of total grain products.     

Evaluation of capital cost data: Liquid moving equipment

Capital cost correlations are given for liquid moving equipment. Correlations available in the literature and current data from suppliers, contractors, consultants and industry are compared on a consistent basis. Forty-three graphs show the relative magnitudes of the different correlations, and the recommended correlation for each type of equipment is given. Some factors are given on the costs of installing liquid moving equipment.
