Immediate and late results of the surgical treatment of the aneurysms and dissections of the ascending aorta

Cyclosporine (CsA) and some of its metabolites (M9, M17, M18, M21) have been determined by means of an LC-MASS method in eight psoriatic patients developing nephrotoxicity. In comparison with a control group (15 psoriatics who after the same period of time, with the same daily dose, did not develop nephrotoxicity) they showed an increase of CsA metabolites, especially M17. Because M17 blood concentrations in the nephrotoxic group tended to be higher than in the control group from the first week of treatment we suggest that M17 might be considered a marker of ongoing nephrotoxicity.     

Ground-based remote sensing and profiling of the lower atmosphere using radio wavelengths

From an all-weather point of view, radio waves appear to be most suitable for the remote sensing of winds, temperature, water vapor, and liquid of the troposphere. Some background is given on the measured data, and the physical principles involved are discussed.     

Plasma and red cell lipids in sickle cell disease

Lipids, in particular phospholipids, are essential components of membrane systems, and the measurement of phospholipids and cholesterol in plasma and tissues is helpful in diagnosis. Phospholipids represent about 60 to 70% of total red cell (RBC) lipids, while about 25% is free cholesterol. Lipids in RBC are present in a dynamic state of equilibrium, and the RBC have the capacity for rapid exchange of lipids with plasma in several ways. The present study examined the cholesterol and phospholipid levels of plasma and erythrocytes in male patients with sickle cell anemia and in healthy male individuals of comparable age. This was performed with a view to detecting possible differences that might be related to some of the RBC abnormalities which accompany the disease. The results show that plasma lipids are significantly reduced in patients with sickle cell anemia and that RBC cholesterol was higher in sickle cell patients than in normal subjects.     

GERTS QR: A Model for Multi-Resource Constrained Queueing Systems Part I: Concepts, Notation, and Examples

This paper presents a new GERTS model and simulator, GERTS QR, directed to the modeling and analysis of Multi-Resource Constrained (MRC) queueing systems. That is, systems where resource requirements, in addition to the availability of a service center or channel, may constrain the system. The development and notation of the GERTS QR model are briefly summarized, and three examples of MRC queueing systems are given to illustrate the application of the model. The three examples are: (1) a labor-limited job shop queueing system, (2) a retail sales outlet, and (3) the planning of a jet engine overhaul facility.     

The significance of dopamine, versus other catecholamines, for L-dopa induced facilitation of sexual behavior in the castrated male rat

The effects of a wide dose range of L-DOPA on male rat sexual behavior were investigated. The animals were castrated as adults and supplied with small amounts of testosterone propionate. It was found that doses of L-DOPA up to 2.5 mg/kg facilitated, while higher doses inhibited, sexual behavior in animals pretreated with pargyline, 20 mg/kg, + MK486, 50 mg/kg. The effects of L-DOPA on sexual behavior were not restricted to the copulatory act, but included elements preceding the copulatory act as well. Most of the facilitatory effects of L-DOPA 2.5 mg/kg were prevented by the dopamine receptor blocker pimozide; 0.10 mg/kg. It is concluded that dopamine is the catecholamine of major importance in mediating the L-DOPA induced facilitation of sexual behavior in the castrated male rat. However, some elements of the copulatory act appear to be modified by noradrenaline and/or adrenaline as well.     

Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in two East African oryxes

Tuberculous lesions were observed at necropsy of 2 East African oryxes (Oryx gazella beisa) at a municipal zoological park in Jackson, Ms. Microscopic examination revealed granulomas containing acid-fast bacilli in the lungs and liver of both animals, as well as in the uterus and mediastinal lymph nodes of 1 animal. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was isolated from the tissues of both oryxes and from fluid aspirated from the mammary gland of 1 oryx; the organism was pathogenic for guinea pigs but not for rabbits.     

Adjuvant therapy for osteosarcoma in dogs: results of randomized clinical trials using combined liposome-encapsulated muramyl tripeptide and cisplatin

Two randomized, double-blind clinical trials in dogs with spontaneous appendicular osteosarcoma treated with combination chemoimmunotherapy are reported. In both trials, dogs without overt metastasis underwent complete amputation of the affected limb. In trial 1, 40 dogs were treated with cisplatin chemotherapy [(CDDP), 70 mg/m2 i.v. every 28 days x 4]. Following CDDP, dogs without evidence of overt metastasis (n = 25) were randomized to receive liposome-encapsulated muramyl tripeptide phosphatidylethanolamine ](L-MTP-PE), 2 mg/m2 i.v.) or placebo liposomes (lipid equivalent) twice weekly for 8 weeks. Of 14 dogs in the placebo group, 13 (93%) died of metastasis; the median survival time was 9.8 months. Of 11 dogs in the L-MTP-PE group, 8 (73%) developed metastasis; the median survival time was 14.4 months, which was significantly longer than that of the placebo group (P < 0.01). In trial 2, 64 dogs received CDDP (70 mg/m2 i.v. every 21 days x 4) and were randomized to concurrently receive L-MTP-PE (2 mg/m2 i.v.) twice or once weekly, or placebo liposomes once weekly for 8 weeks. Median survival times were 10.3, 10.5, and 7.6 months, respectively. There were no significant differences among the three treatment groups in trial 2. Survival times for dogs receiving L-MTP-PE in trial 1 were significantly longer than those for dogs in trial 2 that received four doses of CDDP concurrently with twice weekly L-MTP-PE (P < 0. 04). The results of the first trial confirm our previous observation that L-MTP-PE has antimetastatic activity in dogs with osteosarcoma when given following amputation. The results of the second trial demonstrate that there is no survival advantage of administering L-MTP-PE concurrently with CDDP.
