Fifteen fresh cadaver impacts were conducted in simulation of pedestrian-automobile accidents. The test sled configuration simulated an automobile bumper and hood in "standard" and "nosedive" situations as well as "hard" and "soft" impact surfaces. Instrumentation and film demonstrated large axial compression forces in the struck leg and considerable angular velocity of the torso in all modes. Dissection revealed primary injury at the impact site at low velocities with added remote injury at high velocities. Fracture of the lateral tibial plateau was most common. Lowering the bumper height offered the greatest protection against injury at moderate impact velocities. 相似文献

The influence of argon gas pressure (0.15-40 Pa) on the refractive indices n,k of dc planar-magnetron reactively sputtered cermet and amorphous semiconductor films has been investigated for a layer thickness of approximately 50 nm. Stainless steel-carbon and amorphous hydrogenated carbon layers with relatively low index n and stainless steel-silicon and amorphous hydrogenated silicon layers with relatively high index n are examined with a view to solar selective surface applications. The development of structural porosity with associated reduction in n for layers deposited at high argon pressure significantly improves the solar absorptance of surfaces incorporating stainless steel-silicon or amorphous hydrogenated silicon layers. 相似文献

Grinding mill circuits are hard to control due to poor plant models, large external disturbances, uncertainties from internal couplings, and process variables that are difficult to measure. This paper proposes a novel fractional order disturbance observer (FO-DOB) for a run-of-mine (ROM) ore milling circuit. A fractional order low pass filter (Q-filer) is used in the DOB to offer an additional degree of freedom in tuning for set-point tracking performance and disturbance rejection performance. Another disturbance observer is introduced in which a Bode ideal cut-off (BICO) filter is used for the Q-filter. A full non-linear plant model is used for evaluation of the performance gained over the ubiquitous PI controller. The simulation results show that the FO-DOB and BICO-DOB schemes are useful additional tools for ROM ore milling circuit control implementations. 相似文献

A comparison of self-report vs. observer rating of depressed mood in a heterogenous inpatient population revealed wide variations in concordance among diagnostic groups. Patients diagnosed as having Affective Psychosis and "Other' illnesses showed the highest correlation between four self-report scales and an observer rating scale. Patients with a diagnosis of depressive Neurosis showed only modest correlation, while Schizophrenics revealed no significant correlation, on these instruments, suggesting inconsistent communication of affect from Schizophrenic patients to observers. In contrast, when self-report scales were intercorrelated, patients in all four diagnostic categories showed highly significant correlations, indicating that they were consistently reporting their affective state on these instruments. The implications of these findings for future research as well as for practical clinical management are discussed. 相似文献

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a gasoline oxygenate that has become a significant threat to groundwater supplies across the United States. Due to its physiochemical properties it has proven difficult and costly to remove from contaminated sites. This study was conducted to determine whether the alternative oxygenates (AO)—diisopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyltert-butyl ether (ETBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), and ethanol (EtOH)—present a more efficient and less costly option from a remediation standpoint. Air stripping, carbon adsorption, and ultraviolet/H2O2 and O3/H2O2 advanced oxidation processes were examined at pilot scale to develop design parameters from which technical and economic comparisons were made for each alternative oxygenate versus MTBE. The experimental results showed that the ether AOs—DIPE, TAME, and ETBE—were each more efficiently and more economically treated than MTBE. The alternative alcohol oxygenates—TBA and EtOH—were less efficiently and less economically treated by the processes studied. The number of immigrants in the United States is at an all time high, yet psychologists have largely ignored the domain of immigrant health. This article considers 1 aspect of immigrant health, risk for pediatric injury. A sample of over 5,000 5-year-old children from impoverished families was studied; approximately 13% had immigrant mothers. Children of immigrants had a significantly lower rate of injury in the prior year. This was particularly true of non-White children of immigrants. Three possible mediators for this finding--assistance with parenting, parenting style, and health care accessibility--were considered, but none explained the difference. In this paper we present a data parallel volume rendering algorithm that possesses numerous advantages over prior published solutions. Volume rendering is a three-dimensional graphics rendering algorithm that computes views of sampled medical and simulation data, but has been much slower than other graphics algorithms because of the data set sizes and the computational complexity. Our algorithm usespermutation warpingto achieve linear speedup (run time is O(S/P) forPprocessors whenP\= O(S/logS) forS\=n3samples), linear storage (O(S)) for large data sets, arbitrary view directions, and high-quality filters. We derived a new processor permutation assignment of five passes (our prior known solution was eight passes), and a new parallel compositing technique that is essential for scaling linearly on machines that have more processors than view rays to process (P>n2). We show a speedup of 15.7 for a 16k processor over a 1k processor MasPar MP-1 (16 is linear) and two frames/second with a 1283volume and trilinear view reconstruction. In addition, we demonstrate volume sizes of 2563, constant run time over angles 5 to 75°, filter quality comparisons, and communication congestion of just 19 to 29\%. 相似文献

Many applications of knowledge discovery and data mining such as rule discovery for semantic query optimization, database integration and decision support, require the knowledge to be consistent with the data. However, databases usually change over time and make machine-discovered knowledge inconsistent. Useful knowledge should be robust against database changes so that it is unlikely to become inconsistent after database updates. This paper defines this notion of robustness in the context of relational databases and describes how robustness of first-order Horn-clause rules can be estimated. Experimental results show that our estimation approach can accurately identify robust rules. We also present a rule antecedent pruning algorithm that improves the robustness and applicability of machine discovered rules to demonstrate the usefulness of robustness estimation. 相似文献

The total maximum daily load (TMDL) concept provides the basis for regulating pollution load from riverine sources to impaired water bodies. However, load is comprised of two components: flow and concentration. These two components may have confounding, or even conflicting, effects on waterbody attributes of concern. This is particularly the case for dynamic, advective systems, such as estuaries. Resolving these components is critical for properly predicting the response of impaired systems to watershed management actions. The Neuse River Estuary in North Carolina is an example of such an impaired system. Nitrogen has been identified as the pollutant of concern, and the process of developing a TMDL for nitrogen is underway. We, therefore, analyze the extensive data that have been collected for the Neuse River and estuary to investigate spatiotemporal relationships between river flow, riverine total nitrogen (TN) inputs, water temperature, dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration, algal density, and primary productivity. Results support the belief that phytoplankton in the estuary are under substantial riverine control. However, the riverine TN concentration alone has only a minor role in determining estuarine chlorophyll concentration. River flow has a stronger influence, likely through its effects on down-estuary nitrogen delivery, residence time, salinity, and turbidity. These results imply that using riverine nitrogen load as the metric to evaluate watershed nutrient management may not be appropriate. While nitrogen controls should reduce loads in the long term, in the short term, river flow is the dominant component of load and has the opposite effect of nitrogen on algae at the up-estuary locations. 相似文献

Reliability-Based Design for Internal Stability of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A parametric study was conducted using Monte Carlo simulation to assess how uncertainty in design parameters affects the probability of internal failure of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls. Bishop’s simplified method was used to conduct the internal stability analyses. The results of the analyses indicate that the mean and coefficient of variation of the backfill friction angle, mean and coefficient of variation of the tensile strength of reinforcement, mean unit weight of the backfill, mean surcharge, mean reinforcement vertical spacing, and mean reinforcement length have a significant effect on the probability of internal failure of MSE walls. Based on the results of the parametric study, a series of additional simulations were conducted where the significant parameters were varied over a broad range. The results of these simulations were used to develop a set of reliability-based design (RBD) charts for internal stability of MSE walls. A method to adapt these charts to address model bias and model uncertainty is also presented. A MSE wall was designed using the RBD method and two other deterministic design methods. The required tensile strength of the reinforcement obtained from the RBD method fell between the strengths determined from the deterministic methods. 相似文献
