In this research, polypropylene/wood‐flour composites (WPCs) were blended with different contents of wood and/or maleated polypropylene (MAPP) and clay. We found that the addition of MAPP or clay in the formulation greatly improved the dispersion of the wood fibers in the composite; this suggested that MAPP or clay may have played the role of an adhesion promoter in the WPCs. The results obtained with clay indicate that it also acted as a flame retardant. The thermal tests carried out with the produced samples showed an increased crystallization temperature (Tc), crystallinity, and melting temperature (Tm) with wood loading. The increase of the two former parameters was explained by the incorporation of wood flour, which played the role of nucleating agent and induced the crystallization of the matrix polymer. On the other hand, the Tm increase was ascribed to the insulating properties of wood, which hindered the movement of heat conduction. The effects of UV irradiation on Tm and Tc were also examined. Tc increased with UV exposure time; this implied that UV degradation generated short chains with low molecular weight that could move easily in the bulk of the sample and, thus, catalyze early crystallization. The flexural strength and modulus increased with increasing wood‐flour content. In contrast, the impact strength and tensile strength and strain decreased with increasing wood‐flour content. Echo-planar imaging (EPI) can be used to produce snapshot images of the human stomach and antro-pyloro-duodenal segment in real time as an alternative technique to intubation and exposure to ionizing radiation. The method has been further developed to monitor simultaneous gastric motility and gastric emptying of liquid and solid meals. The model has been utilized to study the effects of pharmacological agents on gastric function.Eight normal subjects were imaged in a 0.5-T superconducting magnet for up to 6 h following ingestion of 800 ml tap water, followed by 500 ml porridge test meal + 500 ml tap water. A rapid multislice technique was adopted to image adjacent transverse slices (10 mm thick) through the gastric region. In addition, three subjects were orally dosed with 20 mg of the prokinetic agent Cisapride. Gastric volumes for each slice were calculated and summed to produce a measure of total gastric volume and gastric emptying. Contractile activity at the level of the antro-pyloric segment was detected using sequential 128 ms images at 3 s intervals. Alternate measurements of gastric volume and motility were made for the duration of the study.Gastric emptyingT
1/2's (times to empty 50% of the gastric contents) of 12.9 min for water and 116 min for porridge were in agreement with results obtained by the traditional techniques of gamma scintigraphy and impedance imaging. The frequency of gastric contractions increased from 2.4 contractions per minute (cpm) to 3.2 cpm following water and from 2.9 to 3.2 cpm following porridge. The prokinetic effect of enhanced coordination of antroduodenal contractions was also observed. These studies have demonstrated that EPI can be used to detect and image gastroduodenal function in man, totally noninvasively, and can be used to study the effects of drugs acting on the gastrointestinal tract. 相似文献

Nanographitic materials are gaining enormous interest as a new class of reinforcement for nanocomposites, promising revolutionary electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. However, the progress has been quite limited especially in terms of mechanical properties. Here we report a significant leap, >2× increases in tensile strength and modulus of an epoxy composite using surface treated graphite nanoplatelets (GnPs). This corroborated by increases in Tgs as well as the presence of oxygen‐functionalized groups verified by XPS, suggest improved distribution and chemical interaction at the filler‐to‐matrix interface. Toughness values also showed increases with concentration, without compromising the strength or failure strain. However, if solvent levels during degassing were not reduced sufficiently, negligible contributions to strength and stiffness were observed with GnP loading. Subsequent elevated temperature treatments increased the strength of the composite due to cure enhancement of the matrix material, yet did not provide mechanical enhancements due to the incorporation of the filler. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The actin filament‐binding and filament‐severing activities of the aplyronine, kabiramide, and reidispongiolide families of marine macrolides are located within the hydrophobic tail region of the molecule. Two synthetic tail analogues of aplyronine C (SF‐01 and GC‐04) are shown to bind to G‐actin with dissociation constants of (285±33) and (132±13) nM , respectively. The crystal structures of actin complexes with GC‐04, SF‐01, and kabiramide C reveal a conserved mode of tail binding within the cleft that forms between subdomains (SD) 1 and 3. Our studies support the view that filament severing is brought about by specific binding of the tail region to the SD1/SD3 cleft on the upper protomer, which displaces loop‐D from the lower protomer on the same half‐filament. With previous studies showing that the GC‐04 analogue can sever actin filaments, it is argued that the shorter complex lifetime of tail analogues with F‐actin would make them more effective at severing filaments compared with plasma gelsolin. Structure‐based analyses are used to suggest more reactive or targetable forms of GC‐04 and SF‐01, which may serve to boost the capacity of the serum actin scavenging system, to generate antibody conjugates against tumor cell antigens, and to decrease sputum viscosity in children with cystic fibrosis. 相似文献

We report the observation of room-temperature optical gain at 1.3 μm in electrically driven dilute nitride vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers. The gain is calculated with respect to injected power for samples with and without a confinement aperture. At lower injected powers, a gain of almost 10 dB is observed in both samples. At injection powers over 5 nW, the gain is observed to decrease. For nearly all investigated power levels, the sample with confinement aperture gives slightly higher gain. 相似文献

Boundary colors are observed when light from a scene is dispersed by a prism or diffraction grating. We discovered that patterns with repeating black and white stripes can produce repeating bands of boundary colors with two hues. These hues are virtually constant as measured by chromaticity or CIELAB. We found seven cases of this kind using a new appearance model for boundary colors. The model correctly predicts that green and magenta bands recur as stripe widths and dispersion strength vary. The first green/magenta case in the sequence traces out an accurate ellipse in XYZ color space. Green and magenta bands are prominent in supernumerary rainbows and interference rings, and we explain why that might be the case. The explanation is based on an interesting property of the visible spectrum. In addition to the green/magenta cases, the other cases are orange/cyan, yellowish‐green/purple, and yellow/violet. The success of the boundary color appearance model implies that bands are perceived as if the wavelength responses of the cones were essentially independent, which contradicts the actual behavior of cones. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atmospheric plasma treatments on various forms of carbon were performed to compare the effect of surface modification using carbon monoxide (CO) as the active gas, in comparison to the conventionally used O2. Changes in surface characteristics were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as a function of duration. The results indicated that use of O2 plasma resulted in only a limited oxygen uptake (O/C = 0.11), while CO treatments resulted in tailorable surface O/C ratios as high as 0.69, a result not attainable when using low-pressure RF plasmas (O/C < 0.1). High-resolution XPS analysis and Auger spectroscopy confirmed that a tailorable level of carbonyl functional groups could be evenly distributed throughout the surface. Both Raman and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) indicated nano-scale degradation of the structure when using the O2 treatment. On the other hand, CO treated specimens exhibited no observable damage to the material with high levels of oxygen incorporation. Contact angle measurements verified the formation of a highly stable hydrophilic surface and excellent dispersion was observed in an aqueous solution on treated specimens after CO treatment. Variable domains of llama heavy-chain antibodies (VHH) are becoming a potent tool for a wide range of biotechnological and medical applications. Because of structural features typical of their single-domain nature, they are relatively easy to produce in lower eukaryotes, but it is not uncommon that some molecules have poor secretion efficiency. We therefore set out to study the production yield of VHH. We computationally identified five key residues that are crucial for folding and secretion, and we validated their importance with systematic site-directed mutations. The observation that all key residues were localised in the V segment, in proximity of the J segment of VHH, led us to study the importance of J segment in secretion efficiency. Intriguingly, we found that the use of specific J segments in VHH could strongly influence the production yield. Sequence analysis and expression experiments strongly suggested that interactions with chaperones, especially with the J segment, are a crucial aspect of the production yield of VHH. 相似文献

A theory is presented for the adhesive stresses in single and double lap joints under tensile loading, while subjected to thermal stress. The formulation includes the effects of bending, shearing, stretching and hygrothermal deformation in both the adherend and adhesive. All boundary conditions, including shear stress free surfaces, are satisfied. The method is general and therefore applicable to a range of material properties and joint configurations including metal-to-metal, metal-to-CFRP or CFRP-to-CFRP. The solution is numerical and is based on an equilibrium finite element approach. The mechanical properties of mineral-filled polypropylene (PP) are determined not only by the size, shape and modulus of the filler particles, but also by microstructure. For example, poor impact strength is correlated with a high capacity for nucleation of crystallization. In the present study, optical microscopy has been used to measure the growth rate of spherulites in PP. In tandem with this, isothermal d.s.c. measurements have been made of the crystallization of the PP filled with talc, calcium carbonate and stearate-coated carbonate at different loading levels. Computer simulation of spherulite growth has been used to derive the number of nucleating sites per unit volume of polymer and, using surface area measurements, the number of sites per unit area of mineral surface was obtained. Values for talc were, as expected, considerably higher than those for carbonate (and especially coated carbonate) fillers. The presence of filler affects not only the nucleation and kinetics of the crystallization process but also the crystallinity and orientation indices and the proportion of β-phase crystallites present. The connection between these factors and impact strength is discussed. It is concluded that impact properties are determined by inter alia crack pinning and blocking by filler particles, stress concentrations at the edges of the filler particles, and the nucleating ability of the filler. 相似文献
