Effects of the intermediate retinoid metabolite retinal on the pattern of the dental lamina in vitro

Retinoids have important roles in pattern formation during embryonic development and might act as endogenous morphogens. They are necessary for normal odontogenesis and excess retinol alters the pattern of odontogenesis producing supernumerary buds of the dental lamina in the diastema region of the mouse mandible. Because the metabolism of retinoids in the developing mandible is unknown, the effects of retinal (an intermediate metabolite in the local conversion of retinol to retinoic acid) on the patterning of odontogenesis were examined. Retinal produces supernumerary buds and enhanced epithelial proliferation in day-9 mandibles in vitro. The endogenous levels of retinal in the mandible at the time of initiation of odontogenesis were also measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. Retinal was detected only at day 10 and not at later stages of development. Local metabolism of this intermediate retinoid may be a rate-determining step in the production of active retinoid metabolites that may control the pattern of the dentition, which is established at the time of the appearance of the dental lamina at embryonic day 12.     

Long-term progression in chronic manganism: ten years of follow-up

We studied the long-term clinical course of five patients with chronic manganese intoxication. The mean scores of the King's College Hospital Rating Scale for Parkinson's disease increased from 15.0 +/- 4.2 in 1987 to 28.3 +/- 6.70 in 1991 and then to 38.1 +/- 12.9 in 1995. The deterioration was most prominent in gait, rigidity, speed of foot tapping, and writing. Tissue concentrations of manganese in blood, urine, scalp hair, and pubic hair returned to normal. Follow-up MRIs did not show paramagnetic high-signal intensity on T1-weighted images. The data indicate that clinical progression in patients with manganese parkinsonism continues even 10 years after cessation of exposure.     

Child abuse in Hong Kong revisited after 15 years: characteristics of victims and abusers

The purpose of this paper was to examine the characteristics of the victims and abusers of child abuse cases on the Child Protection Registry in Hong Kong as of March 1995 and to compare findings with a similar community report of child abuse in Hong Kong conducted approximately 15 years earlier. As of March 31, 1995, there were 457 active cases of child abuse or suspected child abuse (44% male and 56% female) on the computerized Child Protection Registry. Fifty percent of the victims were grade school age children between 7-12, and 62.4% suffered physical abuse. The abusers or suspected abusers were 52% male and 48% female with nearly half (49%) in their thirties. The majority of abusers were married/cohabiting (75%) with only a grade school education (60%). As compared to 1979, there was an increase of sexual child abuse cases, female victims of child abuse, and an increase in male abusers or suspected abusers.     

Measurement of diffusivity of a liquid diamine in solid epoxies using attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR)

A number of studies on thermosetting polymeric composite materials have indicated the existence of a three dimensional region of the matrix in the vicinity of the fiber, which exhibits distinct properties. A key factor in the interphase formation of epoxy-diamine mixtures is the diffusivity of the diamine relative to the epoxy prepolymer. A technique for measuring diffusion coefficients of a liquid through solid polymeric thin layers is described. Infrared attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopy is used to analyze diffusion couples with infrared distinguishable bands. A cylindrical germanium crystal, coated with the polymeric layer of interest, is immersed in a boat cell filled with the diffusant, and infrared spectra of the system are taken in real time. By those means, only the region close to the solid surface is scanned without interferences from the bulk. The temperature dependence of diffusivity can also be evaluated by the use of a heated cell. Diffusivities that are evaluated in this way can be used to predict stoichiometric gradients during the curing reaction of the system and, therefore, the structure and property gradients of the material around the fiber. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Isolation of a novel Helicobacter species, Helicobacter cholecystus sp. nov., from the gallbladders of Syrian hamsters with cholangiofibrosis and centrilobular pancreatitis

A filamentous, gram-negative, motile bacterium with a single polar sheathed flagellum was isolated from gallbladders of hamsters with cholangiofibrosis and centrilobular pancreatitis. Bacteria grew under microaerophilic conditions at 37 and 42 degrees C, were oxidase, catalase, arginine aminopeptidase, and L-arginine arylamidase positive, reduced nitrate to nitrite, were resistant to cephalothin, and exhibited intermediate susceptibility to nalidixic acid. Sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that the bacterium was a novel member of the Helicobacter genus, most closely related to Helicobacter pametensis. We propose to name this bacterium Helicobacter cholecystus. In epidemiologic studies, isolation of H. cholecystus correlated strongly with the presence of cholangiofibrosis and centrilobular pancreatitis; however, further studies are needed to define the role of this bacterium in pathogenesis.     

Frontoethmoidal meningoencephaloceles: a review of 14 consecutive patients

Over a period of 4.5 years, 14 patients with frontoethmoidal meningoencephaloceles were treated. Most patients came from Northern Namibia. Precise delineation of all cranial abnormalities was obtained by modern imaging techniques, and specific patterns of cerebral abnormality were found. The malformation was corrected in a single stage, and significant modifications have been developed to render the procedure simpler and safer. Information from our series favors delayed neural tube closure as the primary pathogenesis of the defect and suggests a common teratogen as the most probable etiological agent. Our experience leads us to advocate early correction of even small defects.     

Neuromuscular activation patterns during treadmill walking after space flight

Astronauts adopt a variety of neuromuscular control strategies during space flight that are appropriate for locomoting in that unique environment, but are less than optimal upon return to Earth. We report here the first systematic investigation of potential adaptations in neuromuscular activity patterns associated with postflight locomotion. Astronaut-subjects were tasked with walking on a treadmill at 6.4 km/h while fixating a visual target 30 cm away from their eyes after space flights of 8-15 days. Surface electromyography was collected from selected lower limb muscles and normalized with regard to mean amplitude and temporal relation to heel strike. In general, high correlations (more than 0.80) were found between preflight and postflight activation waveforms for each muscle and each subject: however relative activation amplitude around heel strike and toe off was changed as a result of flight. The level of muscle cocontraction and activation variability, and the relationship between the phasic characteristics of the ankle musculature in preparation for toe off also were altered by space flight. Subjects also reported oscillopsia during treadmill walking after flight. These findings indicate that, after space flight, the sensory-motor system can generate neuromuscular-activation strategies that permit treadmill walking, but subtle changes in lower-limb neuromuscular activation are present that may contribute to increased lower limb kinematic variability and oscillopsia also present during postflight walking.
