We compared the prevalence of injuries requiring medical treatment in the general population, in cocaine users and in heroin users, and we studied the factors associated with the occurrence of injuries in these groups, using data from two interview surveys carried out in 1993 in Spain: the National Health Interview Survey, a national representative sample of the non-institutionalized general population, and a survey of a non-probability sample of heroin or cocaine users selected from the community. The subjects included in the study were persons 16-40 years of age in urban areas: 4261 persons from the general population, 369 cocaine users and 215 heroin users. The annual prevalence of injuries requiring medical treatment was 7.9 percent in the general population, 10.8 percent in cocaine users and 35.2 percent in heroin users. There was a statistically significant positive association of injury occurrence (1) among the general population: with male sex, alcohol use, use of tranquillizers/sleeping pills, and the use of antidepressants or stimulants; (2) in cocaine users: with the use of opiates other than heroin; and (3) in heroin users: with alcohol use, the use of tranquillizers/sleeping pills, and the injected route. The only statistically significant negative association was with the amount of cocaine consumed among heroin users. The results suggest that other psychoactive substances besides alcohol are positively associated with injury occurrence, and that cocaine use may contribute to a reduced risk of injuries associated with the use of depressants (alcohol, tranquillizers, heroin).  相似文献

Neurotrophic factors support the differentiation and survival of neurons and influence properties of synaptic transmission. The neurotrophic hypothesis postulates a retrograde action of trophic factors: their production and release by target cells and their uptake by innervating axons. Besides the retrograde route of trophic messengers, the survival of neurons and the development of synapses is thought to be also regulated by anterograde, afferent trophic signals. We now show that exogenous neurotrophins are transported in the anterograde direction, from cell bodies to the axon terminals, and that the intact neurotrophin is released after anterograde transport, taken up and utilized by second-order visual neurons in the developing chick brain. These results suggest that anterogradely transported neurotrophins may play a role in synaptic plasticity and may have effects at more than one synapse beyond the initial release site.  相似文献

In laboratories around the world, neuroscientists from diverse disciplines are exploring various aspects of brain structure. Because of the size of the domain, neuroscientists must specialize, making it difficult to fit results together, causing some research efforts to be duplicated because of lack of sharing of information. The authors have begun a long-term project to build a neuroscience research database for brain structure. One aspect of the database is the ability to visualize high-quality, high-resolution micrographs montaged together into 3-D structures as they were in the living brain. As demonstrated in this paper's analysis, realistic presentation of these visualizations across computer networks will stress current and proposed gigabit networks. Image compression can reduce network loads, but wide-spread use of the visualizations will still require networks capable of sustaining terabits per second of throughput  相似文献
