Joining the debate on the structure of depression, S. R. H. Bearh and N. Amir (2003) analyzed college students' responses to 6 Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) items with predominantly somatic content and concluded that they identified a small latent taxon corresponding to involuntary defeat syndrome. An exact replication of these analyses yielded virtually identical taxometric results, but parallel analyses of simulated taxonic and dimensional comparison data matching the intercorrelations and skewed distributions of the BDI items showed the results to be more consistent with dimensional than with taxonic latent structure. Analyses in a clinical sample with nonskewed indicators further supported a dimensional interpretation. The authors discuss methodological strategies for conducting and interpreting taxometric analyses under the adverse conditions commonly encountered in psychopathology research, including skewed indicators and small putative taxa. Catalytic hydrodechlorination (HDC) is an effective means of detoxifying chlorinated waste. Gold nanoparticles supported on Fe(3)O(4) have been tested in the gas phase (1 atm, 423 K) HDC of 2,4-dichlorophenol. Two 1% w/w supported gold catalysts have been prepared by: (i) stepwise deposition of Au on α-Fe(2)O(3) with subsequent temperature-programmed reduction at 673 K (Au/Fe(3)O(4)-step); (ii) direct deposition of Au on Fe(3)O(4) (Au/Fe(3)O(4)-dir). TEM analysis has established the presence of Au at the nano-scale with a greater mean diameter (7.6 nm) on Au/Fe(3)O(4)-dir relative to Au/Fe(3)O(4)-step (4.5 nm). We account for this difference in terms of stronger (electrostatic) precursor/support interactions in the latter that can be associated with the lower pH point of zero charge (with respect to the final deposition pH) for Fe(2)O(3). Both catalysts promoted the preferential removal of the ortho-Cl substituent in 2,4-dichlorophenol, generating 4-chlorophenol and phenol as products of partial and total HDC, respectively, where Au/Fe(3)O(4)-step delivered a two-fold higher rate (2 × 10(-4) mol(Cl) h(-1) m(Au)(-2)) when compared with Au/Fe(3)O(4)-dir. This unprecedented selectivity response is attributed to activation of the ortho-C-Cl bond via interaction with electron-deficient Au nanoparticles. The results demonstrate the feasibility of a controlled recovery/recycling of chlorophenol waste using nano-structured Au catalysts.  相似文献

Increased interconnection has been highlighted as potentially facilitating the integration of wind generation in power systems by increasing the flexibility to balance the variable wind output. This paper utilizes a stochastic unit commitment model to simulate the impacts of increased interconnection for the island of Ireland with large penetrations of wind generation. The results suggest that increased interconnection should reduce average prices in Ireland, and the variability of those prices. The simulations also suggest that while increased interconnection may reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Ireland, Great Britain would experience an increase in emissions, resulting in total emissions remaining almost unchanged. The studies suggest that increased interconnection would not reduce excess wind generation. This is because under unit commitment techniques which incorporate wind power forecasts in the scheduling decisions, wind curtailment is minimal even with low levels of interconnection. As would be expected an increase in interconnection should improve system adequacy considerably with a significant reduction in the number of hours when the load and reserve constraints are not met.  相似文献

A methodology based on high-performance gel exclusion chromatography (HPLC-GEC) has been developed to perform permeability studies of vesicles. Encapsulation of two marker isothiocyanate fluorescein (FITC) dextrans of 4400 and 40,500 molecular mass was used as a model system. Combination of two TSK-PW columns, one efficient in vesicle sizing (G6000 PW), the other in that of dextrans (G4000 PW), was required to achieve complete particle separation and to remove entirely the unentrapped dextran after encapsulation into vesicles. Coupling fluorescence and light scattering detection allowed to control the efficiency of the separation, to quantify the vesicle leakage and to follow both the integrity of the vesicles and changes in their size. This methodology can be applied to other fields such as encapsulation of water soluble compounds and drug delivery systems.  相似文献

The Extradenticle (Exd) protein in Drosophila acts as a cofactor to homeotic proteins. Its nuclear localization is regulated. We report the cloning of the Drosophila homothorax (hth) gene, a homolog of the mouse Meis1 proto-oncogene that has a homeobox related to that of exd. Comparison with Meis1 finds two regions of high homology: a novel MH domain and the homeodomain. In imaginal discs, hth expression coincides with nuclear Exd. hth and exd also have virtually identical, mutant clonal phenotypes in adults. These results suggest that hth and exd function in the same pathway. We show that hth acts upstream of exd and is required and sufficient for Exd protein nuclear localization. We also show that hth and exd are both negative regulators of eye development; their mutant clones caused ectopic eye formation. Targeted expression of hth, but not of exd, in the eye disc abolished eye development completely. We suggest that hth acts with exd to delimit the eye field and prevent inappropriate eye development.  相似文献

The catalytic activities of a range of hydrogen reduced nickel Y zeolites for the hydrogenation of toluene were measured and correlated with the following catalytic parameters: reaction temperature; reaction time; coke deposition. The role of the alkali metal co-cation (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+ or Cs+) in influencing the overall hydrogenation activity of the supported nickel metal was probed. The effect of poisoning the surface Bronsted acidity by the adsorption of ammonia is discussed. For comparative purposes, data on the hydrogenation of benzene over the same catalysts are included.  相似文献

The liquid phase hydrodechlorination (HDC) of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) has been studied over 1% (w/w) Pd/C and Pd/Al2O3 under conditions of minimal mass transport constraints. The HDC of 2,4-DCP generated HCl and 2-CP as the only intermediate partially dechlorinated product which reacts further to yield phenol; cyclohexanone was formed over Pd/Al2O3, but not over Pd/C, prior to complete dechlorination. Pd/Al2O3 is characterized (on the basis of TEM analysis) by a narrow distribution of smaller Pd particles to give a surface area weighted mean particle DIAMETER = 2.4 nm that is appreciably lower than the value of 13.2 nm established for Pd/C, where the latter is characterized by a broader distribution of larger (spherical) particles. The addition of NaOH served to increase fractional dechlorination by suppressing HDC inhibition due to the HCl that is generated. Reuse of the catalysts revealed an appreciable deactivation of Pd/C and a limited loss of activity in the case of Pd/Al2O3. Deactivation of Pd/C can be linked to a decrease (up to ca. 60%) in the initial BET surface area allied to appreciable leaching (up to ca. 40%) of the starting Pd content through the corrosive action of HCl and, while the average Pd diameter is essentially unaffected, there is evidence of a preferred leaching of larger Pd particles. The stronger metal/support interactions prevalent in Pd/Al2O3 results in limited Pd leaching and comparable initial HDC activities during catalyst reuse with/without NaOH addition. Inclusion of HCl in the reaction mixture (pH 5–1.5) resulted in a marked decline in the initial HDC rate associated with Pd/Al2O3 and a lesser drop in HDC activity for Pd/C. The difference in response to bulk solution pH variations are discussed in terms of the nature of the reactive species in solution and the amphoteric behavior of the Pd supports.  相似文献

In the maturation of the Escherichia coli antibiotic Microcin B17, the product of the mcbA gene is modified posttranslationally by the multimeric Microcin synthetase complex (composed of McbB, C, and D) to cyclize four Cys and four Ser residues to four thiazoles and four oxazoles, respectively. The purified synthetase shows an absolute requirement for ATP or GTP in peptide substrate heterocyclization, with GTP one-third as effective as ATP in initial rate studies. The ATPase/GTPase activity of the synthetase complex is conditional in that ADP or GDP formation requires the presence of substrate; noncyclizable versions of McbA bind to synthetase, but do not induce the NTPase activity. The stoichiometry of ATP hydrolysis and heterocycle formation is 5:1 for a substrate that contains two potential sites of modification. However, at high substrate concentrations (>50Km) heterocycle formation is inhibited, while ATPase activity occurs undiminished, consistent with uncoupling of NTP hydrolysis and heterocycle formation at high substrate concentrations. Sequence homology reveals that the McbD subunit has motifs reminiscent of the Walker B box in ATP utilizing enzymes and of motifs found in small G protein GTPases. Mutagenesis of three aspartates to alanine in these motifs (D132, D147, and D199) reduced Microcin B17 production in vivo and heterocycle formation in vitro, suggesting that the 45 kDa McbD has a regulated ATPase/GTPase domain in its N-terminal region necessary for peptide heterocyclization.  相似文献
