Rats with lesions to the hippocampus proper and the subiculum were tested for timing behavior and temporal memory. Using the peak procedure, they were trained to discriminate a 40 s interval and a retention gap tested the memory for time. Results were interpreted within the theoretical framework of the internal clock and with respect to current theories on hippocampal function. Timing behavior was unaffected by either lesion and no shifts in the temporal discrimination functions were observed. The lesions also failed to show a deficit in the memory for temporal events. For all groups, the retention gap increased the mean peak time by the time of the gap. This indicated that all rats used the stop rule which required the use of working memory. Thus, it was concluded that the hippocampus is neither necessary for accurate timing behavior nor for the memory of temporal events. 相似文献

We investigate finite-state systems with weights. Departing from the classical theory, in this paper the weight of an action does not only depend on the state of the system, but also on the time when it is executed; this reflects the usual human evaluation practices in which later events are considered less urgent and carry less weight than close events. Tissues and sera from 110 patients diagnosed with colorectal primary carcinoma, 20 patients with benign colorectal diseases and 31 healthy donors were subjected to quantitative CEA analysis. Multiple samples from tumor lesions and autologous histologically normal mucosa (10 cm from the tumor) were obtained at the time of surgery (cancer patients) or endoscopy (benign patients and healthy volunteers). CEA content was measured in protein extracts obtained from these tissues using a quantitative RIA method. A limit of normality for CEA content was established as 300 ng/mg of protein. When this was taken as cut-off, 104 of 110 (94.5%) tumor lesions and 51 of 110 (46.4%) autologous histologically normal colonic mucosa from cancer patients had elevated CEA levels. No correlation with stage of disease was found, while a correlation was observed with degree of tumor differentiation. A statistically significant difference between CEA content in tumor lesions and in histologically normal mucosa from cancer patients was observed (p = -0.001). Moreover, CEA content was statistically higher in the normal mucosa from cancer patients than in that from healthy donors (p = 0.005). CEA content in tissue specimens from benign lesions differed significantly from that in tissue from healthy donors (p = 0.005) and in carcinoma lesions (p < 0.001). The highest CEA content was observed in benign lesions with severe dysplasia. No statistical correlation between CEA content in carcinoma tissues and serum CEA levels (r = 0.195, p = .13) was found. Therefore, in considering diagnosis or therapy with anti-CEA MAbs for colorectal-carcinoma patients, or potential therapies with anti-CEA recombinant vaccines, serum CEA levels should not be taken as indicating CEA expression in tumor lesions. 相似文献

The Council of the European Union has proposed a revision on the EU regulation on novel foods and novel food ingredients concerning safety assessment of traditional foods from non-EU countries and their introduction onto the EU market. The proposal stipulates that such foods may be placed on the EU market if their history of safe use in the country of origin is appropriately documented. The present statement of the SKLM gives an overview on current discussions on practical implementation of the "history of safe use" concept as well as examples of its application. The SKLM, in principle, agrees with these concepts, underscores, however, in connection with convincing evidence for a "history of safe use" the need for a range of additional information to achieve a comprehensive risk assessment. In the opinion of the SKLM such information must comprise compositional data as well as experience on adverse effects. A list of questions considered essential is presented. Humans interact with their environment through the five senses, but little is known about population variability in the ability to assess contaminants. Sensory thresholds and biochemical indicators of metallic flavor perception in humans were evaluated for ferrous (Fe(2+)) iron in drinking water; subjects aged 19-84 years participated. Metallic flavor thresholds for individuals and subpopulations based on age were determined. Oral lipid oxidation and oral pH were measured in saliva as potential biochemical indicators. Individual thresholds were 0.007-14.14 mg/L Fe(2+) and the overall population threshold was 0.17 mg/L Fe(2+) in reagent water. Average thresholds for individuals younger and older than 50 years of age (grouped by the daily recommended nutritional guidelines for iron intake) were significantly different (p = 0.013); the population thresholds for each group were 0.045 mg/L Fe(2+) and 0.498 mg/L Fe(2+), respectively. Many subjects >50 and a few subjects <50 years were insensitive to metallic flavor. There was no correlation between age, oral lipid oxidation, and oral pH. Standardized olfactory assessment found poor sensitivity for Fe(2+) corresponded with conditions of mild, moderate, and total anosmia.
