Chitinase is an antifungal protein which is induced in higher plants during infection and stress. In this paper the induction of chitinase activity in response to infection by Aspergillus parasiticus (NRRL 2999) in six sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench) genotypes and its association with aflatoxin production were investigated. Chitinase was induced in all six genotypes (two each of red, yellow and white sorghum) when infected by A parasiticus (NRRL 2999). The induction of chitinase activity was highest in the white cultivars, followed by the yellow and red genotypes, compared with healthy grains. In the white cultivars the chitinase activity increased on the 6th and 9th days after infection and was four‐ to fivefold higher than in healthy grains. The total aflatoxin produced was lower in the red genotypes than in the yellow and white genotypes. The white genotypes showed maximum total aflatoxin production at 6 days after infection. The aflatoxins produced in the white genotypes were comparable to those in the red genotypes. There was a significant positive correlation between chitinase activity and aflatoxin production in red sorghum (r2 = 0.600, p ≤ 0.001) and white sorghum (r2 = 0.411, p ≤ 0.001). Short stature, a marker for undernutrition early in life, has been associated with obesity in Brazilian women, but not in men. We tested the hypothesis that weight gain during the reproductive years could explain this gender difference. A national two-stage household survey of mothers with one or more children under five years of age was conducted in Brazil in 1996. The subjects were women aged 20 to 45 years (N = 2297), with last delivery seven months or more prior to the interview. The regions of the country were divided into rural, North/Northeast (urban underdeveloped) and South/Southeast/Midwest (urban developed). The dependent variables were current body mass index (BMI) measured, BMI prior to childbearing (reported), and BMI change. Socioeconomic variables included mother's years of education and family purchasing power score. A secondary analysis was restricted to primiparous women. The prevalence of current overweight and overweight prior to childbearing (BMI > or = 25 kg/m2) was higher among shorter women (<1.50 m) compared to normal stature women only in the urban developed region (P < 0.05). After adjustment for socioeconomic variables, age, parity, BMI prior to childbearing, and age at first birth, current BMI was 2.39 units higher (P = 0.008) for short stature women living in the urban developed area compared with short stature women living in the urban underdeveloped area. For both multiparous and primiparous women, BMI gain compared to the value prior to childbearing was significantly higher among short stature women living in the urban developed region (P <= 0.04). These results provide clear evidence that short stature was associated with a higher BMI and with an increased risk of weight gain/retention with pregnancy in the developed areas of Brazil, but not in the underdeveloped ones.  相似文献

The rotational spectrum of (CH3OH)2 has been observed in the 8 to 24 GHz region with a pulsed-beam Fabry-Perot cavity Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer. Previously we demonstrated that each transition of the a-type R(J), Ka = 0 is split into 15 states of the 16 theoretically expected states by tunneling motions. Here we show that the K = 1 states are split into the 16 expected states through the assignment of the Ka = 1 a-type transitions and DeltaKa = 1 b-type transitions. The internal-rotation analysis of the two inequivalent methyl groups presented here was guided by the previous experimental observations and theory for multidimensional tunneling, which predicts 16 tunneling components for each R(J) transition from 25 distinct tunneling motions. The effective barrier to internal rotation for the donor methyl group of (CH3OH)2 is V3 = 183.0 cm-1, and is one-half of the value for the methanol monomer (370 cm-1), while the barrier to internal rotation of the acceptor methyl group is 120 cm-1, one-third of the methanol monomer. The structure of the methanol dimer complex is similar to that of water dimer with a hydrogen bond distance of 1.96(2) A and tilt of the acceptor methanol of 77(2)degrees from the O-H-O axis (one standard deviation uncertainty). Controversies surrounding tympanic temperature (Tty) itself and techniques for measuring it have dampened the potential usefulness of Tty in determining core temperature (operationally defined here as the body temperature taken at a deep body site). The present study was designed to address the following questions. 1) Can a tympanic membrane probe be made that is safer and more reliable than its predecessors? 2) Why is the effect of facial cooling and heating on Tty so inconsistent in reports from different laboratories? 3) Is Tty still useful as a measure of core temperature? Data from this study, obtained with a modified thermocouple probe, suggest that the widely reported facial skin cooling effect on Tty is most probably due to thermal contamination from the surrounding ear canal wall and/or suboptimal contact of the probe sensor with the tympanic membrane because 1) Tty that fell during facial cooling was increased to the precooling level by the repositioning of the probe sensor; 2) Tty determined by using a probe with a larger sensor area (the sensor soldered to a steel wire ring)tended to fall in response to facial cooling, whereas Tty determined with a thermally insulated probe ring did not; and 3) Tty obtained under careful positioning of the insulated probe was relatively insensitive to facial cooling or heating. Because Tty was practically identical to esophageal temperature (Tes) in the steady state, i.e., 36.83 +/- 0.20 (SD) degrees C for Tty and 36.87 +/- 0.16 degrees C for Tes at room temperature (n = 11), and because facial cooling had little effect on both Tty and Tes (36.86 +/- 0.17 degrees C for Tty and 36.86 +/- 0.26 degrees C for Tes during facial or scalp skin cooling), we support the postulate that Tty is a good measure of core temperature. The temperature transient in response to foot warming was detected 5 min (n = 2) faster with Tty than with Tes. Thus, with further improvements in the design of the probe. Tty can become a standard for determination of core body temperature.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: This study reviews the results of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) surgery over 21 years (1 January 1976 to 31 December 1996). METHODS: A prospectively gathered database was analysed. RESULTS: Infrarenal AAA repair was performed in 1515 patients: 492 (32.5 per cent) had elective repair of an asymptomatic AAA; 194 (12.8 per cent) had elective repair of a symptomatic AAA; 156 (10.3 per cent) had emergency repair of a symptomatic non-ruptured AAA; and 673 (44.4 per cent) had surgery for a ruptured AAA. The 30-day and/or same admission mortality rates were 6.1, 5.8, 14.1 and 37 per cent respectively. Operative mortality increased in all four groups over the study interval, although this only attained statistical significance in patients having elective repair of a symptomatic, non-ruptured AAA. There was a significant increase in the age of patients undergoing elective repair of an asymptomatic AAA, but not in the other three groups. There was also a significant increase in the proportion of straight 'tube' grafts inserted in all four groups. CONCLUSIONS: It remains the minority of patients who have elective operation before the onset of symptoms and/or rupture. Despite anaesthetic and surgical specialization, the results of AAA repair have not improved over the past two decades. Operative mortality may be increasing, possibly because of the increasing age and associated comorbidity of the patients presenting to this unit.  相似文献

Although it is widely accepted that an increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is preferable for young classroom learners, there is a paucity of data that illustrate the direct effect of enhanced audibility on children with normal hearing, and schools continue to accept less-than-ideal classroom listening environments for their students. Eight students in kindergarten, first, or second grade were observed in acoustically similar classrooms while the application of soundfield amplification was experimentally controlled. Observations of appropriate and inappropriate student behavior before, during, and after soundfield treatment were recorded by trained observers. A significant decrease in inappropriate behaviors came immediately after turning on the soundfield amplification. When the soundfield system was turned off, all of the students revealed a significant increase in inappropriate behaviors. All eight students revealed an increase in appropriate task management immediately following the use of soundfield amplification. When the soundfield treatment was removed, the effect achieved during treatment was maintained for all 8 students.  相似文献

The motorneuron degeneration (mnd) mutation causes one of the few late-onset progressive neurodegenerations in mice; therefore, the mnd mouse is a valuable paradigm for studying neurodegenerative biology. The mnd mutation may also model human neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) or Batten disease. mnd maps to the centromeric region of mouse chromosome 8, which likely corresponds to portions of human chromosomes 13,8, or 19; we note that the chromosome 13 portion maps close to a region thought to contain the human Type V NCL locus. We have identified candidate genes for the mnd locus from human chromosomes 13,8, and 19, and we are mapping these genes in the mouse to determine their proximity to the mutated locus and to refine the comparative human-mouse map in this area. A candidate gene from human chromosome 13 is LAMP1, which encodes lysosomal membrane protein 1. We found that LAMP1 in the mouse lies within the region of the mnd mutation. Therefore, we sequenced LAMP1 cDNAs from homozygous mnd mice and unrelated wildtype C57BL/6 mice. We find no differences between the two cDNA species in the regions examined, and expression analysis shows a similar LAMP1 protein distribution in wildtype and mutant mice, suggesting that an abnormal accumulation of material within normal lysosome structures is unlikely to be the pathogenetic mechanism in the mnd mouse.  相似文献
