In the literature it is generally assumed that venous reflux within the radicular veins is prevented by the presence of bicuspid valves and narrowing of the transdural part of these vessels. Recently, we performed a human cadaver study of the internal vertebral venous plexus. Surprisingly, a large number of radicular and perimedullary veins appeared to be filled with Araldite CY 221 mixture, after injection of this material into the vertebral venous system, implicating reflux via the radicular veins and suggesting insufficiency of the presumed anti-reflux mechanism. Therefore, it was decided to study the radicular veins in order to determine and to investigate the presence or absence of anti-reflux mechanisms within this system. The vertebral venous systems of ten fresh human cadavers, between 64 and 93 years of age, were injected with Araldite CY 221 mixture. After polymerization, all cadavers were dissected and the spinal nerve sheaths, including nerve roots, radicular veins and epidural veins, were excised as a whole. After macroscopical examination, serial sections (40 microm) were cut on a freezing microtome and stained in Von Gieson medium. Every third section was stained immunohistochemically with smooth muscle antigen (SMA), to visualize smooth muscle cells. In all cadavers, a number of intradural radicular veins was filled with Araldite. Employing microscopical examination, no bicuspid valves were found. However, four structures were encountered that might serve as ananti-reflux-mechanism: 1) intravenous dural folds, 2) meandrous configuration, and 3) narrowing of the radicular veins at the point of penetration of the dura mater, and 4) varying numbers of smooth muscle fibers in the walls of the intradural and extradural parts of the radicular veins. Reflux via the radicular veins seems to be a physiological phenomenon. Structural valves have not been encountered during this study. Intravenous dural folds, meandrous configuration and narrowing of the transdural part of the radicular veins, and the presence of large numbers of smooth muscle cells in the radicular venous walls suggest the existence of a dynamic reflux-regulating system that has the ability to increase the intravascular resistance under conditions of venous hyperpression, in order to protect the spinal cord from venous pressure waves. Superposition coded symmetric relaying is a bandwidth-efficient cooperative scheme where each source node simultaneously transmits both its own "local" packet and "relay" packet that originated at its partner by adding the modulated local and relay signals in Euclidean space. This paper investigates the power allocation and outage probability of a superposition coded symmetric relaying system with finite-constellation signaling. We first derive the mutual information (MI) metrics for the system. The derived MI metrics consist of two parts: one represents the MI conveyed by the modulated signal corresponding to its own data, and the other represents the MI conveyed by the modulated signal corresponding to its partner’s data. Using MI based effective signal-to-noise ratio mapping technique, we attain expressions for the outage probability. Furthermore, we discuss power allocation policies that minimize the outage probability. Simulation results are presented to verify the correctness of the outage probability analysis and the benefits of the power allocation. 相似文献

In 2007 Ireland supplied 96% of the total energy demand with fossil fuels (7% domestic and 89% imported) and 3% with renewable energy, even though there are enough renewable resources to supply all the energy required. As energy prices increase and the effects of global warming worsen, it is essential that Ireland begins to utilise its renewable resources more effectively. Therefore, this study presents the first step towards a 100% renewable energy-system for Ireland. The energy-system analysis tool used was EnergyPLAN, as it accounts for all sectors of the energy-system that need to be considered when integrating large penetrations of renewable energy: the electricity, heat, and transport sectors. Initially, a reference model of the existing Irish energy-system was constructed, and subsequently three different 100% renewable energy-systems were created with each focusing on a different resource: biomass, hydrogen, and electricity. These energy-systems were compared so that the benefits from each could be used to create an ‘optimum’ scenario called combination. Although the results illustrate a potential 100% renewable energy-system for Ireland, they have been obtained based on numerous assumptions. Nanoclay and carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been in focus recently as means of enhancing β phase crystals formation in poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF). Dominantly, the so-far work has been carried out on films/thin sheets filled with nanoclay. It has been found, mainly from combined XRD and DSC data, that nanoclay influences the PVDF structure, and particularly the β phase crystals formation is enhanced. Results published by various groups are in fairly good agreement. There are no results for nanoclay filled melt-spun PVDF fibres.The influence of CNT on PVDF structure has been less studied. XRD data indicating an enhancing role of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNT) on β phase crystals formation in solution compounded PVDF films are available. Published results for MWNT/PVDF films are not in good agreement. The only study into single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT)/PVDF has been made on electrospun nanofibres.We explore above findings towards melt-spun nanofilled PVDF fibres. We present new results obtained by us for melt-spun PVDF fibres containing non-functionalized and amino-functionalized double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNT). BACKGROUND: Various cryopreservation techniques have been investigated to elongate preservation time, however, most have failed to be clinically induced because of damage due to ice crystal formation. Subzero nonfreezing conditions could theoretically reduce organ metabolism without damage due to ice crystal formation. We evaluated the superiority of subzero nonfreezing storage compared with conventional hypothermic storage using isolated rat hepatocytes stored in University of Wisconsin (UW) solution without cryoprotectants. METHODS: Hepatocytes of Wistar rats isolated by collagenase digestion were suspended in UW solution and divided into the following three groups: subzero nonfreezing group (-4 degrees C), zero nonfreezing group (0 degrees C), and control group (4 degrees C). They were stored for 48 hr at the temperatures indicated. After 24 and 48 hr of storage, we carried out a trypan blue exclusion test and a 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, and measured lactate dehydrogenase release, lactic acid, ATP content, and the ability of hepatocytes to synthesize urea. After 48 hr of storage, morphological differences between the control group and the subzero nonfreezing group were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: Significant improvements of the trypan blue exclusion test and ATP contents in the subzero nonfreezing group were observed. Lactic acid production was also significantly suppressed in the subzero nonfreezing group compared with that in the control group. The MTT assay value was significantly better at -4 degrees C than at 4 degrees C. The rate of urea synthesis at -4 degrees C was higher than that at 4 degrees C. Electron microscopy revealed that subzero nonfreezing delayed the lethal bleb-forming process of stored hepatocytes, which was followed by mitochondrial swelling, compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Subzero nonfreezing storage (-4 degrees C) in UW solution could provide better preservability for isolated rat hepatocytes with protection against hypoxic cell injury compared with conventional hypothermic storage (4 degrees C). 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Because myocardial wall thickness is smaller than the spatial resolution of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging, changes in myocardial wall thickness are related to changes in maximum pixel counts via the partial volume effect, allowing for quantification of regional systolic wall thickening. We have developed a new gated SPECT method for computing the global left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) based entirely on changes in maximum regional myocardial counts during systolic contraction. This new method is independent of endocardial edge detection or other geometric measurements. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 23 patients the gated SPECT method was validated by comparison with radionuclide angiography. The correlation between computed LVEFs was excellent (slope = 0.97, r = 0.91). The measurement of LVEF by gated SPECT was highly reproducible, with minimal intraoperator (slope = 0.97, r = 0.97) or interoperator (slope = 1.00, r = 0.97) variability. Measurements of regional thickening indexes were also reproducible, with a mean intraoperator correlation coefficient of 0.89 +/- 0.05 (range 0.79 to 0.95) for the 14 myocardial regions. Finally, the measurement of LVEF was not significantly influenced by changes in reconstruction filter parameters over a range of cutoff frequencies from 0.16 to 0.28. CONCLUSIONS: This new counts-based gated SPECT method for measuring global left ventricular systolic function correlates well with radionuclide angiography, is highly reproducible, and has theoretic advantages over geometric methods. 相似文献

The in vitro activity of Bay 12-8039, a new oral 8-methoxyquinolone, was compared to the activities of 11 other oral antimicrobial agents (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxacin, sparfloxacin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, amoxicillin clavulanate, penicillin, cefuroxime, cefpodoxime, and doxycycline) against 250 aerobic and 140 anaerobic bacteria recently isolated from animal and human bite wound infections. Bay 12-8039 was active against all aerobic isolates, both gram-positive and gram-negative isolates, at < or = 1.0 microg/ml (MICs at which 90% of isolates are inhibited [MIC90s < or = 0.25 microg/ml) and was active against most anaerobes at < or = 0.5 microg/ml; the exceptions were Fusobacterium nucleatum and other Fusobacterium species (MIC90s, > or = 4.0 microg/ml) and one strain of Prevotella loeschii (MICs, 2.0 microg/ml). In comparison, the other quinolones tested had similar in vitro activities against the aerobic strains but were less active against the anaerobes, including peptostreptococci, Porphyromonas species, and Prevotella species. The fusobacteria were relatively resistant to all the antimicrobial agents tested except penicillin G (one penicillinase-producing strain of F. nucleatum was found) and amoxicillin clavulanate. 相似文献
