Previous research on race differences in health, we believe, has failed to take into account the initial state of health of the respondents. Other research has demonstrated that elders in poor health are more likely to experience a change in their health over time. It is unclear if the greater probability of decline in health observed among African Americans is a result of being more likely to begin such observations in health states that are worse than those for Whites. This investigation examines declines in health over a 30-month period in a sample of African American and White elders who began the study in similar "good health." Findings support the supposition that African Americans are more likely to report a decline in their health, regardless of the health measure used. Differences by race in the decline of health appear to be a consequence of economic and educational discrepancies between the two groups.  相似文献

The incidence of spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage is approximately 7 cases per 100,000 population. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (32%), retinal tear (30%), proliferative retinopathy after retinal vein occlusion (11%) and posterior vitreous detachment without retinal tear (8%) are the most common causes of spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage. Vitreous hemorrhage can be caused by the pathologic mechanisms of disruption of normal retinal vessels, bleeding from diseased retinal vessels or abnormal new vessels, and extension of hemorrhage through the retina from other sources. Hemorrhage into the vitreous gel results in rapid clot formation and is followed by slow clearance of approximately 1% per day. The cellular response to vitreous hemorrhage is unusual with regard to hemorrhage in any tissue outside the vitreous cavity and has been compared to a "low-turnover" granuloma. Unique clinicopathologic features of long-standing vitreous hemorrhage include cholesterolosis bulbi (synchysis scintillans), hemoglobin spherulosis, and vitreous cylinders. Complications of nonclearing vitreous hemorrhage are hemosiderosis bulbi and glaucoma. Ghost cell glaucoma, hemolytic glaucoma, and hemosiderotic glaucoma may result from vitreous hemorrhage. The established treatment option for nonclearing vitreous hemorrhage is pars plana vitrectomy. Experimental nonsurgical treatment options involve improvement of physiologic clearance mechanisms in order to accelerate fibrinolysis, liquefaction, hemolysis and phagocytosis.  相似文献

In this work, mixing and co-gelation of Au nanoparticles (NPs) and highly luminescent CdSe/CdS core/shell nanorods (NRs) are used as tools to obtain noble metal particle-decorated macroscopic semiconductor gel networks. The hybrid nature of the macrostructures facilitates the control over the optical properties: while the holes are trapped in the CdSe cores, the connected CdSe/CdS NRs support the mobility of excited electrons throughout the porous, hyperbranched gel networks. Due to the presence of Au NPs in the mixed gels, electron trapping in the gold NPs leads to a suppressed radiative recombination, namely, quenches the fluorescence in certain fragments of the multicomponent gel. The extent of fluorescence quenching can be influenced by the quantity of the noble metal domains. The optical properties are monitored as a function of the NR:NP ratio of a model system CdSe/CdS:Au. By this correlation, it demonstrates that the spatial extent of quenching initiated by a single Au NP exceeds the dimensions of one NR, which the Au is connected to (with a length of 45.8 nm ± 4.1 nm) and can reach the number of nine NRs per Au NP, which roughly corresponds to 400 nm of total electron travel distance within the network structure.  相似文献

Above a critical temperature, high‐performance fibers may lose their mechanical properties resulting in catastrophic events of damage when, e.g., used as load‐carrying ropes. Here, a method to functionalize polymer fibers with thermochromic optical coatings that enable signaling of damaging thermal history is introduced. These smart coatings are comprised of an index‐tunable anti‐reflection coating based on chalcogenide phase change materials (PCM). It is demonstrated that the insulator?metal phase transition of these materials can be aligned with the critical deterioration temperature of both polyethylene terephthalate (PET) monofilaments and liquid‐crystal polyester (LCP) yarns by composition tuning. The carefully designed optical system amplifies the change in optical properties of its constituents upon phase change. The thermal and mechanical degradation of these fibers can thus be monitored and displayed by eye.  相似文献

Mechanical properties of hydrogels can be modified by the variation of structure and concentration of reactive building blocks. One promising biological source for the synthesis of biocompatible hydrogels is fibrinogen. Fibrinogen is a glycoprotein in blood, which can be transformed enzymatically to fibrin playing an important role in wound healing and clot formation. In the present work, it is demonstrated that hybrid hydrogels with their improved mechanical properties, tunable internal structure, and enhanced resistance to degradation can be synthesized by a combination of fibrinogen and reactive amphiphilic copolymers. Water‐soluble amphiphilic copolymers with tunable molecular weight and controlled amounts of reactive epoxy side groups are used as reactive crosslinkers to reinforce fibrin hydrogels. In the present work, copolymers that can influence the mechanical properties of fibrin‐based hydrogels are used. The reactive copolymers increase the storage modulus of the hydrogels from 600 Pa to 30 kPa. The thickness of fibrin fibers is regulated by the copolymer concentration. It could be demonstrated that the fibrin‐based hydrogels are biocompatible and support cell proliferation. Their degradation rate is considerably slower than that of native fibrin gels. In conclusion, fibrin‐based hydrogels with tunable elasticity and fiber thickness useful to direct cell responses like proliferation and differentiation are produced.  相似文献

Based on lowest-order finite elements in space, we consider the numerical integration of the Landau–Lifschitz–Gilbert equation (LLG). The dynamics of LLG is driven by the so-called effective field which usually consists of the exchange field, the external field, and lower-order contributions such as the stray field. The latter requires the solution of an additional partial differential equation in full space. Following Bartels and Prohl (2006), we employ the implicit midpoint rule to treat the exchange field. However, in order to treat the lower-order terms effectively, we combine the midpoint rule with an explicit Adams–Bashforth scheme. The resulting integrator is formally of second-order in time, and we prove unconditional convergence towards a weak solution of LLG. Numerical experiments underpin the theoretical findings.  相似文献

Accelerated neurite outgrowth of rat cortical neurons on a flexible and inexpensive substrate functionalized with gold nanocone arrays is reported. The gold nanocone arrays are fabricated on Teflon films by a bottom‐up approach based on colloidal lithography followed by deposition of a thin gold layer. The geometry of nanocone arrays including height and pitch is controlled by the overall etching time and template polystyrene beads size. Fluorescence microscopy studies reveal high viability and significant morphological changes of the neurons on the structured surfaces. The elongation degree of neurite is maximized on the nanocone arrays created with 1 µm polystyrene beads by a factor of two with respect to the control. Furthermore, the interface between the neurons and the nanocones is investigated by scanning electron microscopy and focused ion beam cross‐sectioning. The detailed observation of the neuron/nanocone interfaces reveals the morphological similarity between the nanocone tips and the neuronal processes, the existence of interspace at the interface between the cell body and the nanocones, and neurite bridging among the neighboring structures, which may induce the acceleration of neurite outgrowth. The flexible gold nanocone arrays can be a good supporting substrate of neuron culture with noble electrical and optical properties.  相似文献

To project high‐dimensional data to a 2D domain, there are two well‐established classes of approaches: RadViz and Star Coordinates. Both are well‐explored in terms of accuracy, completeness, distortions, and interaction issues. We present a generalization of both RadViz and Star Coordinates such that it unifies both approaches. We do so by considering the space of all projective projections. This gives additional degrees of freedom, which we use for three things: Firstly, we define a smooth transition between RadViz and Star Coordinates allowing the user to exploit the advantages of both approaches. Secondly, we define a data‐dependent magic lens to explore the data. Thirdly, we optimize the new degrees of freedom to minimize distortion. We apply our approach to a number of high‐dimensional benchmark datasets.  相似文献

We chronicled the seasonally recurring hypolimnetic hypoxia in Muskegon Lake – a Great Lakes estuary over 3?years, and examined its causes and consequences. Muskegon Lake is a mesotrophic drowned river mouth that drains Michigan's 2nd largest watershed into Lake Michigan. A buoy observatory tracked ecosystem changes in the Muskegon Lake Area of Concern (AOC), gathering vital time-series data on the lake's water quality from early summer through late fall from 2011 to 2013 (www.gvsu.edu/buoy). Observatory-based measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO) tracked the gradual development, intensification and breakdown of hypoxia (mild hypoxia <4?mg DO/L, and severe hypoxia <2?mg DO/L) below the ~6?m thermocline in the lake, occurring in synchrony with changes in temperature and phytoplankton biomass in the water column during July–October. Time-series data suggest that proximal causes of the observed seasonal hypolimnetic DO dynamics are stratified summer water-column, reduced wind-driven mixing, longer summer residence time, episodic intrusions of cold DO-rich nearshore Lake Michigan water, nutrient run off from watershed, and phytoplankton blooms. Additional basin-wide water-column profiling (2011–2012) and ship-based seasonal surveys (2003–2013) confirmed that bottom water hypoxia is an annually recurring lake-wide condition. Volumetric hypolimnetic oxygen demand was high (0.07–0.15?mg DO/Liter/day) and comparable to other temperate eutrophic lakes. Over 3?years of intense monitoring, ~9–24% of Muskegon Lake's volume experienced hypoxia for ~29–85?days/year – with the potential for hypolimnetic habitat degradation and sediment phosphorus release leading to further eutrophication. Thus, time-series observatories can provide penetrating insights into the inner workings of ecosystems and their external drivers.  相似文献
