Solid-state switching for aircraft electric systems

An aircraft electric system designed around a solid-state approach offers many potential advantages over an electromechanical counterpart. These include higher reliability, longer life, more ruggedness, more versatility, and better compatibility. To achieve these advantages, however, it is not merely sufficient to replace electromechanical components with their solid-state equivalents. Here is one approach that has been tested in the laboratory and in aircraft during the past ten years?with success. Included is a report on an advanced system undergoing evaluation.     

Review of Interrelations of cultures.

Reviews the book, Interrelations of cultures by Richard McKeon (see record 1955-02352-000). This little book deals with eight cultures, particularly their historical origins and value systems. "Interrelations" are treated mainly in historical terms except in the author's introductory essay and the final brief statement by a UNESCO committee. The authors are predominantly historians and philosophers, and these points of view are central in the discussion. This volume will attract only those psychologists who are interested in the cross-cultural study of values or those who enjoy somewhat discursive essays seasoned with occasionally exotic facts. Yet the best of these chapters are extraordinarily thoughtful syntheses of vast bodies of material, and UNESCO deserves thanks for making them available. Issues in Professional Construction Management

The use of professional construction management has increased rapidly since the introduction of this form of organization in the early 1960's. Despite this widespread use questions concerning the scope, definition, and differences in implementation of this project delivery system remain. An ASCE technical committee has investigated these questions and disseminated information concerning professional construction management through technical sessions at ASCE meetings, published papers, and a specialty conference. This paper summarizes the results of these activities and provides references of the literature available regarding the development and use of professional construction management.     

Global observability of flows on the torus: An application of number theory

Kronecker's theorem is used to show that the irrational flows on then-dimensional torus are globally observed by a large class of continuous functions. These results are used to study the observability of Riccati flows on the Grassman manifolds.Supported in part by NASA Grant # NAG 2-203.     

An IC Control Unit for Generating Random and Nonrandom Events

A system has been designed that wil generate user-controlled temporal events and two independent sequences of random events over selectable time periods. The duration and frequency of the events is set by front panel controls over a temporal range determined by the user. This system is suitable for automating experiments in biological and behavioral research.     

Influence of an objective measure on self-reports of behavior.

1,563 8th graders and their mothers completed self-report measures of cigarette smoking, and carbon monoxide levels in alveolar air were taken as an objective measure of smoking behavior. Adolescents who had smoked recently (according to their CO level) reported significantly greater amounts of smoking if they were informed about the biochemical measure before completing the questionnaire. Self-reports by adolescents who had not smoked recently (according to CO levels) and self-reports by mothers were not influenced by awareness of the objective measure. The microstructure of almond (Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A.Webb cv. ‘Nonpareil’) cotyledon

Microstructure of almond (Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A. Webb cv. ‘Nonpareil’) cotyledon was observed with light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The objective of this study was to characterise almond cotyledon surfaces as well as to describe internal and subcellular organisation. The testa has an outer epidermis, which consists of relatively large thin-walled cells, which range from 100 to 300 μm in width. The major portion of the testa consists of approximately 14-20 layers of flattened parenchymal cells with the total thickness of the layers ranging from 80 to 120 μm. The remainder of the testa was comprised of a small amount of vascular tissue. The embryo consisted primarily of parenchymal tissue with relatively thin cell walls (1-3 μm in thickness) and a small amount of provascular tissue. Protein bodies up to 12 μm in width and spaces once occupied by lipid bodies up to 3 μm in width were present in all cells of the embryo.     

Theoretical foundations for collaborative commerce research and practice

Going beyond the trading view of electronic commerce, collaborative commerce (c-commerce) is concerned with electronic means to enable and facilitate collaborative relationships involving knowledge flows among distributed participants engaged in various joint activities such as those that make up the value chain. C-commerce experience among practitioners is in an emergent stage and c-commerce research has yet to be well-developed. There are many open questions about c-commerce practices and fundamentals. Drawing on a wide range of literature, this paper introduces a theoretical foundation for investigating the nature and outcomes of c-commerce. This foundation takes the form of a relatively comprehensive theoretical framework that identifies salient factors and relationships for practitioners to consider in launching a c-commerce initiative or for researchers to consider in designing c-commerce research studies.
