The dependence of the mechanical behavior of nickel foams upon their grain size was studied. First, the grain coarsening phenomenon which occurs during the processing of foams was analyzed. A metallurgical characterization of the grain growth during heat treatment was performed. The grain size effects on the mechanical properties was then studied, namely, via the Hall‐Petch law. The foam walls being very thin, roughly 10 μm in thickness, grain growth and mechanical behavior might be different compared with conventional materials. The present results obtained with foams were compared with literature data on bulk pure nickel and with nickel foils of 10 and 50 μm in thickness which are good candidates for the modeling of the cell walls. The EBSD technique allowed observing the absence of preferred crystallographic orientations for both foams and foils. A mechanical model in the spirit of that by Gibson and Ashby was finally presented incorporating the grain size effect on yield strength and hardening modulus. Abstract Although it is well known that light carries momentum and exerts a pressure on objects, a conservation of momentum principle is apparently rarely used in optics. In nonlinear optics light waves interact and may exchange both energy and momentum. We demonstrate that a conservation of momentum principle holds in these cases and in fact its use is widespread but generally unrecognized in the standard mathematical methods. In both the cases of linear basis waves interacting nonlinearly, e.g. coupled-wave theory and frequency mixing, and fully nonlinear waves, we demonstrate that a governing Hamiltonian is related to momentum. Low rates of triacylglycerol (TAG) biosynthesis were observed in cell-free extracts ofCandida curvata, but rates were increased up to 10-fold by adding either α- or β-cyclodextrins. Spheroplasts, whole or gently disrupted,
had higher rates of incorporation of both [U-14C]glycerol 3-phosphate or [1-14C]oleate into triacylglycerol and the intermediates of its biosynthesis: lysophosphatic acid, phosphatidic acid and diacylglycerol.
Fatty acyl-CoA synthetase was highest with palmitate, oleate and linoleate but was some 6- to 8-fold lower with stearate.
Stearate and stearoyl-CoA were poorly incorporated into lipids. Subcellular fractionation of the spheroplasts into mitochondrial,
microsomal, lipid bodies and supernatant fractions diminished the rates of14C incorporation of oleate into triacylglycerol. By comparing the relative specific activities for each activity in each fraction,
the fatty acyl-CoA synthetase activity appeared mainly in the lipid bodies, and that for phosphatidic acid formation was mainly
in the mitochondrion; other activities were too weak and too dispersed for accurate assessment of their location. Recombining
all the subcellular fractions restored triacylglycerol synthesizing activity. Omitting any single fraction from the mixture
did not result in restoration of triacylglycerol synthesizing activity. Starvation of the yeast, which leads to utilization
of the endogenous lipid reserves, stimulated fatty acyl-CoA synthetase activity, but diminished phosphatidic acid and triacylglycerol

A number of procedures have been investigated for the calibration of a size-exclusion chromatography (s.e.c.) column in the determination of molecular mass (MM) distributions of coal derivatives. The behaviour of narrow fractions of coal extracts in the MM range 200–3000 was compared with a variety of the more generally available calibration standards. Calibration with preparative s.e.c. subfractions of materials similar to those under study has been recommended. Polystyrene standards are satisfactory, however, for MM < 1000, but above this range other polymer standards should be sought. Cyclophilin A (CypA) is a member of the immunophilin family of proteins and receptor for the immunosuppressant drug cyclosporin A (CsA). Here we describe the design and synthesis of a new class of small-molecule inhibitors for CypA that are based upon a dimedone template. Electrospray mass spectrometry is utilised as an initial screen to quantify the protein affinity of the ligands. Background
The purpose of this study was to determine whether sedentary obese women with knee OA initiating an exercise and weight loss program may experience more beneficial changes in body composition, functional capacity, and/or markers of health following a higher protein diet compared to a higher carbohydrate diet with or without GCM supplementation.Methods
Thirty sedentary women (54 ± 9 yrs, 163 ± 6 cm, 88.6 ± 13 kg, 46.1 ± 3% fat, 33.3 ± 5 kg/m2) with clinically diagnosed knee OA participated in a 14-week exercise and weight loss program. Participants followed an isoenergenic low fat higher carbohydrate (HC) or higher protein (HP) diet while participating in a supervised 30-minute circuit resistance-training program three times per week for 14-weeks. In a randomized and double blind manner, participants ingested supplements containing 1,500 mg/d of glucosamine (as d-glucosamine HCL), 1,200 mg/d of chondroitin sulfate (from chondroitin sulfate sodium), and 900 mg/d of methylsulfonylmethane or a placebo. At 0, 10, and 14-weeks, participants completed a battery of assessments. Data were analyzed by MANOVA with repeated measures.Results
Participants in both groups experienced significant reductions in body mass (-2.4 ± 3%), fat mass (-6.0 ± 6%), and body fat (-3.5 ± 4%) with no significant changes in fat free mass or resting energy expenditure. Perception of knee pain (-49 ± 39%) and knee stiffness (-42 ± 37%) was decreased while maximal strength (12%), muscular endurance (20%), balance indices (7% to 20%), lipid levels (-8% to -12%), homeostasis model assessment for estimating insulin resistance (-17%), leptin (-30%), and measures of physical functioning (59%), vitality (120%), and social function (66%) were improved in both groups with no differences among groups. Functional aerobic capacity was increased to a greater degree for those in the HP and GCM groups while there were some trends suggesting that supplementation affected perceptions of knee pain (p < 0.08).Conclusions
Circuit style resistance-training and weight loss improved functional capacity in women with knee OA. The type of diet and dietary supplementation of GCM provided marginal additive benefits.Trial Registration

Background
Although animal and human studies have demonstrated interactions between dietary choline and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, dietary choline deficiency in pregnancy is common in the US and worldwide. We sought to develop and validate a quantitative food frequency questionnaire (QFFQ) to estimate usual daily choline intake in pregnant mothers.Methods
A panel of nutrition experts developed a Choline-QFFQ food item list, including sources with high choline content and the most commonly consumed choline-containing foods in the target population. A data base for choline content of each item was compiled. For reliability and validity testing in a prospective longitudinal cohort, 123 heavy drinking Cape Coloured pregnant women and 83 abstaining/light-drinking controls were recruited at their first antenatal clinic visit. At 3 prenatal study visits, each gravida was interviewed about alcohol, smoking, and drug use, and administered a 24-hour recall interview and the Choline-QFFQ.Results
Across all visits and assessments, > 78% of heavy drinkers and controls reported choline intake below the Dietary Reference Intakes adequate intake level (450 mg/day). Women reported a decrease in choline intake over time on the QFFQ. Reliability of the QFFQ across visits was good-to-acceptable for 2 of 4 group-level tests and 4 of 5 individual-level tests for both drinkers and controls. When compared with 24-hr recall data, validity of the QFFQ was good-to-acceptable for 3 of 4 individual-level tests and 3 of 5 group-level tests. For controls, validity was good-to-acceptable for all 4 individual-level tests and all 5 group-level tests.Conclusions
To our knowledge, this is the first quantitative choline food frequency screening questionnaire to be developed and validated for use with both heavy and non-drinking pregnant women and the first to be used in the Cape Coloured community in South Africa. Given the high prevalence of inadequate choline intake and the growing evidence that maternal choline supplementation can mitigate some of the adverse effects of prenatal alcohol exposure, this tool may be useful for both research and future clinical outreach programs.50.

Noscapine is a phthalideisoquinoline alkaloid isolated from the opium poppy Papaver somniferum. It has long been used as an antitussive agent, but has more recently been found to possess microtubule‐modulating properties and anticancer activity. Herein we report the synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of a series of 6′‐substituted noscapine derivatives. To underpin this structure–activity study, an efficient synthesis of N‐nornoscapine and its subsequent reduction to the cyclic ether derivative of N‐nornoscapine was developed. Reaction of the latter with a range of alkyl halides, acid chlorides, isocyanates, thioisocyanates, and chloroformate reagents resulted in the formation of the corresponding N‐alkyl, N‐acyl, N‐carbamoyl, N‐thiocarbamoyl, and N‐carbamate derivatives, respectively. The ability of these compounds to inhibit cell proliferation was assessed in cell‐cycle cytotoxicity assays using prostate cancer (PC3), breast cancer (MCF‐7), and colon cancer (Caco‐2) cell lines. Compounds that showed activity in the cell‐cycle assay were further evaluated in cell viability assays using PC3 and MCF‐7 cells. 相似文献
