Purpose
To review important aspects of contact lens compliance and to survey contact lens replacement frequency, steps in lens care and hygiene and replacement of the lens storage case via online surveys.Methods
Random US samples (n = 645 and 787) of frequent replacement contact lens wearers answered questions on contact lens wear in online, sponsor-masked surveys.Results
Wearers of lenses prescribed by their practitioner for 2 weekly replacement reported that they replaced lenses as follows: within 2 weeks 45%, within 3 weeks (minor stretching) 68%, within 4 weeks 89%, ≥8 weeks (extreme stretching) 4%, compared to Monthly wearers who reported: within 4 weeks 37%, within 5 weeks (minor stretching) 57%, ≥8 weeks 23% (≥8 weeks extreme stretching, Chi-square p = 0.001). Median frequency for cleaning lens storage case was 2–3 times per week, while 33% reported cleaning monthly or less often. Median lens storage case replacement was every 4–6 months, while 48% reported annual replacement or less often. Most patients cleaned their lens case with hot or cold tap water (72%).Conclusions
These internet surveys revealed significant non-compliance with lens care steps, case hygiene and lens replacement schedule. More than half of the contact lens wearers surveyed were not compliant with their 2-weekly or monthly schedule. Lenses prescribed for longer replacement intervals can lead to more extreme stretching of lens life. To encourage better patient habits, eye care providers should reinforce their recommended frequency of replacement of lenses and storage cases and should reinforce care and hygiene steps at each patient visit. 相似文献132.

Of the five G‐protein‐coupled muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs; M1–M5), M5 is the least explored and understood due to a lack of mAChR subtype‐selective ligands. We recently performed a high‐throughput functional screen and identified a number of weak antagonist hits that are selective for the M5 receptor. Here, we report an iterative parallel synthesis and detailed molecular pharmacologic profiling effort that led to the discovery of the first highly selective, central nervous system (CNS)‐penetrant M5‐orthosteric antagonist, with sub‐micromolar potency (hM5 IC50=450 nM , hM5 Ki=340 nM , M1–M4 IC50 >30 μM ), enantiospecific inhibition, and an acceptable drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK) profile for in vitro and electrophysiology studies. Conversational technologies such as email, chat rooms, and blogs have made the transition from novel communication technologies
to powerful tools for learning. Currently virtual worlds are undergoing the same transition. We argue that the next wave of
innovation is at the level of the computer interface, and that mixed-reality environments offer important advantages over
prior technologies. Thus, mixed reality is positioned to have a broad impact on the future of K-12 collaborative learning.
We propose three design imperatives that arise from our ongoing work in this area grounded in research from the learning sciences
and human-computer interaction. By way of example, we present one such platform, the Situated Multimedia Arts Learning Lab
[SMALLab]. SMALLab is a mixed-reality environment that affords face-to-face interaction by colocated participants within a mediated space. We
present a recent design experiment that involved the development of a new SMALLab learning scenario and a collaborative student participation framework for a 3-day intervention for 72 high school earth science
students. We analyzed student and teacher exchanges from classroom sessions both during the intervention and during regular
classroom instruction and found significant increases in the number of student-driven exchanges within SMALLab. We also found that students made significant achievement gains. We conclude that mixed reality can have a positive impact

Perceptions of support for cessation of smoking during pregnancy, likelihood of quitting, and partner smoking status were explored in a sample of 688 pregnant smokers (372 baseline smokers and 316 baseline quitters). Women with nonsmoking partners were significantly more likely to be baseline quitters than women with partners who smoked. Baseline quitters reported significantly more positive support from their partners than did continuing smokers (p?=?.02). Neither partner smoking status nor partner support at baseline was associated with cessation or relapse later in pregnancy. Women reported greater support, both positive and negative, from nonsmoking partners than from partners who smoked (p?=?.001). Among partner smokers, those who were trying to quit were perceived to be particularly supportive. Cessation interventions for expectant fathers may increase pregnant women's success at quitting. Smooth early high (SEH) and smooth late high (SLH) coo calls differ in the temporal location of a frequency inflection and are generally used in different situations. Coo quality is also influenced by additional features, such as relative harmonic level, which may have communicative significance. The authors used multidimensional scaling to analyze the perceptual similarity of SEH and SLH coos. Neither the temporal position of the frequency inflection nor caller identity could explain the coo groupings. Only the temporal relationships of the relative harmonic levels consistently differed between stimulus clusters. Relative level manipulations were conducted on synthetic coo replicas, resulting in substantial stimulus space reorganization. Although temporal position of the frequency inflection may provide the basis for coo classification, the authors suggest that relative harmonic amplitude can also influence response properties. Investigated the use of cross-episode connections (i.e., when 2 episodes with a shared theme are connected through a thematic structure) in comprehension and memory in 6 experiments with 106 undergraduates. Results from the use of a priming technique in Exps I and II indicate that verification time for a test sentence from 1 story was speeded by an immediately preceding test sentence from a thematically similar story but only when Ss were given instructions to rate the similarities of the stories. In Exp III–VI, a single test sentence was presented immediately after a story was read, with timing controlled by presenting the story one word at a time. Response time for a test sentence from a previously read story was facilitated if the immediately preceding story was thematically similar but only if the previously read story was extensively prestudied. It is concluded that during reading of an episode, thematic information may be encoded to lead to activation of similar episodes and formation of connections in memory between episodes, but such encoding is not automatic and depends on Ss' strategies and task difficulty. Few controlled trials have examined psychotropic medications in children with mood disorders. Multiple medications are often prescribed for these children, who frequently suffer from several comorbid conditions. However, this polypharmacy has been infrequently studied and may lead to adverse drug-drug interactions. Multi-Family Psychoeducation Groups (MFPGs) are an 8-session, manual-driven treatment for children with mood disorders, designed as an adjunct to current medications and psychotherapy. In part, MFPG teaches parents and children to be better consumers of mental health care, including medications. This study examined the effect of MFPG on medications taken by 165 children, ages 8-11, with mood disorders. The authors hypothesized that MFPG would not affect the mean number of medications taken but that the variance in number of medications would decrease from pre- to posttreatment (i.e., the number of medications prescribed for any given child should become more closely distributed around the sample mean). Approximately 70% of participants were diagnosed with bipolar spectrum disorders, and 30% were diagnosed with depressive spectrum disorders. Most had both comorbid behavioral (97%) and anxiety (69%) disorders. Information regarding medications was gathered 4 times: at baseline, 6, 12, and 18 months. Approximately half (n=78) of the participants were randomized into immediate treatment, and half (n=87) were randomized into a 1-year wait-list condition. All were encouraged to continue treatment as usual throughout the study. As hypothesized, no significant pre- to posttreatment differences were found between groups for the mean number of current medications, but variance declined significantly from pre- to posttreatment. Perceived stress and depressive symptoms were examined as correlates and predictors of smoking cessation during pregnancy in a sample of 819 pregnant smokers (454 baseline smokers and 365 baseline quitters). Women who quit early in pregnancy had lower levels of stress and depressive symptoms than baseline smokers. Adjusting for level of addiction and other demographic factors related to stress and depressive symptoms eliminated the significant association between depressive symptoms and smoking cessation. Lower levels of stress and depressive symptoms were not predictive of cessation in later pregnancy. Prenatal healthcare providers should continue to assess level of addiction and provide targeted intensive cessation interventions. More than 200 middle school and high school students from underserved urban communities in Boston, Lowell, and Lawrence, Massachusetts,
participated in after-school and summer enrichment programs over a three-year period, using hands-on learning materials and
web resources to complete hands-on microcontroller-based projects. Program content was based on a suite of robotics and electronics
kits developed by the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Machine Science Inc., together with on-line instructions, a web-based
programming tool, and a shared electronic portfolio of student projects. Participating students worked with classroom teachers
and undergraduate mentors to complete a series of projects, and took part each year in a non-competitive robotics exhibition
and a competitive robot sumo tournament. Goodman Research Group assessed learning outcomes and attitudinal changes using a
variety of measures, including observations of program sessions, group interviews with participating students, pre- and post-program
student surveys, and educator feedback. The program was found to effectively engage participants, give them real engineering
and programming skills, improve their attitudes toward science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects,
and increase their interest in STEM career pathways. These results are presented, along with lessons learned from the program

The ageing responses of surface/centre layer materials from a commercially produced AA7150 thick plate have been studied after both water quenching (WQ) and air cooling (AC). The results show that the higher degree of recrystallisation near the plate surface decreases its age hardening response in AC condition. Quench-induced phases have been found to precipitate preferentially on Al3Zr dispersoids in recrystallised grains. Microstructural observations show that Al3Zr dispersoids in recrystallised grains exhibit the same crystal structure and orientation as those in adjacent subgrains. 相似文献
