Near‐field plasmonic coupling and local field enhancement in metal nanoarchitectures, such as arrangements of nanoparticle clusters, have application in many technologies from medical diagnostics, solar cells, to sensors. Although nanoparticle‐based cluster assemblies have exhibited signal enhancements in surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors, it is challenging to achieve high reproducibility in SERS response using low‐cost fabrication methods. Here an innovative method is developed for fabricating self‐organized clusters of metal nanoparticles on diblock copolymer thin films as SERS‐active structures. Monodisperse, colloidal gold nanoparticles are attached via a crosslinking reaction on self‐organized chemically functionalized poly(methyl methacrylate) domains on polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) templates. Thereby nanoparticle clusters with sub‐10‐nanometer interparticle spacing are achieved. Varying the molar concentration of functional chemical groups and crosslinking agent during the assembly process is found to affect the agglomeration of Au nanoparticles into clusters. Samples with a high surface coverage of nanoparticle cluster assemblies yield relative enhancement factors on the order of 109 while simultaneously producing uniform signal enhancements in point‐to‐point measurements across each sample. High enhancement factors are associated with the narrow gap between nanoparticles assembled in clusters in full‐wave electromagnetic simulations. Reusability for small‐molecule detection is also demonstrated. Thus it is shown that the combination of high signal enhancement and reproducibility is achievable using a completely non‐lithographic fabrication process, thereby producing SERS substrates having high performance at low cost. 相似文献

A high percentage (31%) of groundwater samples from bedrock aquifers in the greater Augusta area, Maine was found to contain greater than 10 μg L(-1) of arsenic. Elevated arsenic concentrations are associated with bedrock geology, and more frequently observed in samples with high pH, low dissolved oxygen, and low nitrate. These associations were quantitatively compared by statistical analysis. Stepwise logistic regression models using bedrock geology and/or water chemistry parameters are developed and tested with external data sets to explore the feasibility of predicting groundwater arsenic occurrence rates (the percentages of arsenic concentrations higher than 10 μg L(-1)) in bedrock aquifers. Despite the under-prediction of high arsenic occurrence rates, models including groundwater geochemistry parameters predict arsenic occurrence rates better than those with bedrock geology only. Such simple models with very few parameters can be applied to obtain a preliminary arsenic risk assessment in bedrock aquifers at local to intermediate scales at other localities with similar geology. 相似文献

Flow cytometry of the bacterium Escherichia coli was demonstrated on a microfabricated fluidic device (microchip). The channels were coated with poly(dimethylacrylamide) to prevent cell adhesion, and the cells were transported electrophoretically by applying potentials to the fluid reservoirs. The cells were electrophoretically focused at the channel cross and detected by coincident light scattering and fluorescence. The E. coli were labeled with a membrane-permeable nucleic acid stain (Syto15), a membrane-impermeable nucleic acid stain (propidium iodide), or a fluorescein-labeled antibody and counted at rates from 30 to 85 Hz. In this study, the authors contribute insight into the temporal nature of work attitudes, examining how job satisfaction changes across the 1st year of employment for a sample of organizational newcomers. The authors examined factors related to job change (i.e., voluntary turnover, prior job satisfaction) and newcomer experiences (i.e., fulfillment of commitments, extent of socialization) that may strengthen or weaken the job satisfaction pattern. Results of a study of 132 newcomers with data collected at 4 unique time periods show a complex curvilinear pattern of job satisfaction, such that satisfaction reached a peak following organizational entry and decreased thereafter. However, examination of moderating factors revealed that individuals who reported less satisfaction with their prior job and those having more positive experiences on the new job, such as greater fulfilled commitments and a higher degree of socialization, were most likely to experience this pattern. Findings from this study offer important implications for theory and research on changes in newcomer attitudes over time as well as practical insight on key factors that shape the pattern of job attitudes as individuals enter and experience a new workplace. Static and dynamic acute toxicity assays of cells were performed on microfluidic devices where materials were hydraulically transported. Static assays were performed by incubating cells with an agent in a microchip reservoir and optically interrogating the cells after hydrodynamic focusing at a cross intersection. Dynamic assays were performed on a microchip with a 25-cm-long spiral channel where the cells were mixed with an agent and optically monitored 0.1, 12, and 22 cm from the point of mixing. The incubation time was determined by the time needed for cells to transit from the mixing location to the point of detection. Cell viability was determined using the ratio of fluorescence signals from membrane permeant (calcein) and membrane impermeant (propidium iodide) stains. The model system used in this study was the viability of Jurkat cells in the presence of the agent Triton X-100). An average LC50 value of 138 microM for Triton X-100 was obtained for an incubation period of 7-12 min using the static assay. LC50 values obtained with the dynamic assay for 25- and 47-s incubation times were 290 and 250 microM Triton X-100, respectively. Research has shown that a given core quantity appears larger as contextual stimuli become smaller, and conversely. This study sought to determine whether such contextual effects are greatest where contextual stimuli appear highly relevant in assessing a core quantity. As defined here, contextual relevance hinges upon physical similarity between core and context objects, as well as upon certain canons of appropriate judgment behavior such as the scientific method. Two parallel experiments were conducted. In both studies, reducing contextual magnitude increased the apparent size of core quantities, as predicted, where contextual relevance was high. Further, such increases in judged core-quantity magnitude had predicted effects on perceived writer stand (pro or con). Where contextual relevance was low, increasing size of context did not influence perceived magnitude of the core quantity viewed in isolation. Here, apparently, respondents discounted low-relevant contexts as predicted. However, when judging author stand on an issue, respondents apparently tended to rate a core quantity as large where context was large and of low relevance. 相似文献

Electroosmotic manipulation of fluids was demonstrated using thin metal electrodes integrated within microfluidic channels at the substrate and cover plate interface. Devices were fabricated by photolithographically patterning electrodes on glass cover plates that were then bonded to polymeric substrates into which the channels were cast. Polymeric substrates were used to provide a permeable membrane for the transport and removal of gaseous electrolysis products generated at the electrodes. Electroosmotic flow between interdigitated electrodes was demonstrated and provided electric field-free pumping of fluids in sections of the channel outside of the electrode pairs. The resultant pumping velocities were shown to be dependent on the applied voltage, not on the applied field strength, and independent of the length of the electroosmotically pumped region. 相似文献

Heterostructures composed of multiple layers of different atomically thin materials are of interest due to their unique properties and potential for new device functionality. MoS2‐graphene heterostructures have shown promise as photodetectors and vertical tunnel transistors. However, progress is limited by the typically micrometer‐scale devices and by the multiple alignments required for fabrication when utilizing mechanically exfoliated material. Here, the synthesis of large‐area, continuous, and uniform MoS2 monolayers directly on graphene by chemical vapor deposition is reported, resulting in heterostructure samples on the centimeter scale with the possibility for even larger lateral dimensions. Atomic force microscopy, photoluminescence, X‐ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopies demonstrate uniform single‐layer growth of stoichiometric MoS2. The ability to reproducibly generate large‐area heterostructures is highly advantageous for both fundamental investigations and technological applications. 相似文献

Within the past 2 years, a putative causal relationship has been reported between vaccination against rabies and the development of fibrosarcomas at injection sites in cats. A retrospective study was undertaken, involving 345 cats with fibrosarcomas diagnosed between January 1991 and May 1992, to assess the causal hypothesis. Cats with fibrosarcomas developing at body locations where vaccines are typically administered (n = 185) were compared with controls (n = 160) having fibrosarcomas at locations not typically used for vaccination. In cats receiving FeLV vaccination within 2 years of tumorigenesis, the time between vaccination and tumor development was significantly (P = 0.005) shorter for tumors developing at sites where vaccines are typically administered than for tumors at other sites. Univariate analysis, adjusted for age, revealed associations between FeLV vaccination (odds ratio [OR] = 2.82; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.54 to 5.15), rabies vaccination at the cervical/interscapular region (OR = 2.09; 95% CI = 1.01 to 4.31), and rabies vaccination at the femoral region (OR = 1.83; 95% CI = 0.65 to 5.10) with fibrosarcoma development at the vaccination site within 1 year of vaccination. Multivariate analysis, adjusted for age and other vaccines, also revealed increased risks after FeLV (OR = 5.49; 95% CI = 1.98 to 15.24) and rabies (OR = 1.99; 95% CI = 0.72 to 5.54) vaccination.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献
