CHARACTERIZATION OF STOMACH AND PYLORIC CAECA PROTEINASES OF TAMBAQUI (COLOSSOMA MACROPOMUM)

The effects of pH, temperature, inhibitors, and substrates on proteolytic activities of crude extracts from the stomach, liver, pyloric caeca, and intestines of Colossoma macropomum were investigated. The highest acid and alkaline proteolytic activities were found in stomach and pyloric caeca, respectively. The optimum pH for the acid and alkaline proteases were 1.8 and 7.0–9.0, respectively, while the optimum temperatures were 35C and 65C. This alkaline protease thermal stability remained unaltered after 90 min incubation at 55C. A pepsin‐like protease was responsible for most of the acidic proteolytic activity (Pepstatin A inhibited approximately 90%), whereas PMSF inhibited about 40% of the alkaline protease. The alkaline proteolytic activity has attractive thermal properties for industrial applications.

The effect of verbal elaborations on memory in young and older adults

The Stein paradigm was used to examine the circumstances under which verbal elaborations enhance memory in young and older adults. Subjects studied target adjectives that were embedded in one of three sentence contexts that varied in elaboration of the subject-adjective relationship: (1) nonelaborated base sentences; (2) base sentences with semantically consistent, but arbitrary verbal, elaborations; and (3) base sentences with explanatory verbal elaborations that clarified the significance of the subject-adjective relationship. The presence of the elaborations was varied at encoding and retrieval, and cued recall of the target adjectives was tested with incidental and intentional learning procedures. In Experiments 1A and 1B, explanatory elaborations at encoding and retrieval yielded the largest memorial facilitation for both young and older adults, and the benefit was comparable for the incidental and intentional learning measures. In Experiment 2, age-related differences in recall were minimal with explanatory elaborations at encoding and retrieval, but larger age differences occurred in the nonelaborated comparison conditions. In Experiment 3, explanatory elaborations present at encoding but not at retrieval enhanced recall when the original Stein stimuli were used, but not with the present stimuli. The implications of these results with regard to the mnemonic efficacy of verbal elaborations for young and older adults are discussed.     

The relationship between the content of aggressive and protective components in gastric juice and endoscopic findings after naproxen sodium and acetaminophen administration

Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) is a growth-regulatory peptide found in a wide range of embryonic and adult tissues. TGF-alpha is produced by keratinocytes and has been reported to be overexpressed in several epidermal diseases, including middle ear cholesteatoma. This report describes ear pathology in the waved-1 mutant mouse, which is severely deficient in TGF-alpha. Morphologic changes of the external and middle ear were studied histologically in waved-1 mutants 2 weeks to 6.5 months of age. Abnormalities found in the mutants included epidermal hyperplasia of the external ear canal (EAC) and tympanic membrane (TM) and enlargement of specialized sebaceous glands adjacent to the cartilaginous EAC. Sebum and desquamated keratin progressively accumulated within the EAC, displacing the TM into the middle ear. These changes appear similar to those occurring in Mongolian gerbils, which are known to develop cholesteatoma. The alterations found in waved-1 mutants are discussed in relation to the possible involvement of TGF-alpha in cholesteatoma pathogenesis.     

Pretreatment hemoglobin level influences local control and survival of T1-T2 squamous cell carcinomas of the glottic larynx

PURPOSE: A number of reports have documented the relationship between pretreatment hemoglobin level and local control and/or survival in the treatment of cervix, bladder, and advanced head and neck tumors. Consideration of correcting anemia before initiation of radiation therapy may prove increasingly important as clinical trials use intensive induction chemotherapy in the treatment of head and neck carcinomas. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy may produce anemia, which in turn may reduce the effectiveness of subsequent irradiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred nine patients with T1-2N0 squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx were treated with definitive radiotherapy at the Fox Chase Cancer Center between June 1980 and November 1990. Follow-up times ranged from 26 to 165 months (median, 82). RESULTS: The 2-year local control rate for patients who presented with a hemoglobin level < or = 13 g/dL was 66%, compared with 95% for patients with a hemoglobin level more than 13 g/dL (P = .0018). The 2-year survival rate for patients with a hemoglobin level < or = 13 g/dL was 46%, compared with 88% for patients with a hemoglobin level more than 13 g/dL (P < .001). Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that hemoglobin level (P = .0016) was the only variable that significantly influenced local control (P = .0016) and survival (P < .0001). CONCLUSION: Patients who presented with hemoglobin levels more than 13 g/dL had significantly higher local control and survival rates. The strong apparent correlation between hemoglobin level, local control, and survival supports consideration of correcting anemia before initiation of radiation therapy.     

Effect of altering the daily herbage allowance to cows in mid lactation on the composition, ripening and functionality of low-moisture, part-skim Mozzarella cheese

A retrospective chart review was used to examine sexual behavior (hypersexual, exposing, and victimizing) and cognitive impairment in 200 youth who had serious mental illness. Lower IQ was associated with increased sexual acting-out. For more serious victimizing sexual behaviors, only Verbal IQ differences reached statistical significance. Overall, sexual behavior was strongly associated with a history of sexual abuse. Sexual abuse history was significantly associated only with lower Performance IQ. Therefore, the association between low Verbal IQ and sexual victimizing behavior is distinct from the effects of sexual abuse. Results underscore the importance of verbal cognitive abilities, regardless of overall cognitive level, in the etiology and treatment of sexual behaviors, especially among individuals without a history of sexual abuse.
