Isolated mediastinal mass in primary amyloidosis

A previously healthy man with lytic bone lesion of the left talus was found to have a large middle mediastinal mass on routine admission chest roentgenogram. A large amyloid tumor of the mediastinum, representing the sole intrathoracic manifestation of primary amyloidosis, was resected. This presentation of intrathoracic amyloidosis has not previously been reported.     

Effects of early exposure to ventral gland odor on physical and behavioral development and adult social behavior in mongolian gerbils.

Compared 34 pairs of male and female gerbils reared by ventral gland-excised and intact parents. Repeated measurements before and after puberty failed to reveal an effect of gland odor exposure on body weight, ventral gland size, open-field defecation, and time of vaginal opening. Exposed Ss were more attracted than nonexposed Ss to a strange male's gland odor during preference tests involving "marked" and "unmarked" paper strips. Opposite-sex pairs of exposed Ss engaged in more social behavior than did nonexposed pairs, but there was no difference in fighting frequency or, during extended cohabitation, in fecundity. While early exposure to gland odor apparently does not affect physical maturation, it may enhance later responsiveness to stimuli (gland odors) that are useful in locating conspecifics and that facilitate social interactions between previously unacquainted gerbils. Revisiting sex differences in the expression of depression.

251 male and 390 female college students indicated the degree to which they would engage in a number of behaviors or cognitions if depressed and completed the Beck Depression Inventory. The rated items were gathered using procedures suggested by the behavioral-analytic model. Factor analyses were employed to categorize items into interpretable variables. Stepwise discriminant function analyses were performed to determine maximum separation of male and female groups. Men and women showed distinct differences in the nature of their interpersonal behaviors as well as in cognitive styles for coping with depression. Findings suggest that there are sex differences in the expression of depression even in predominantly normal populations and reinforce the value of investigating theories of depression in the context of a continuity between normal mood states and depressive phenomena. Functional modification of indole binding site with indomethacin congeners

Indomethacin and four congeners were shown by equilibrium dialysis to interfere with the binding of L-tryptophan at the primary indole binding site on defatted human serum albumin. Incubation of albumin with 1-(p-bromoacetamidobenzovl)- and 1-(m-bromoacetamidobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-3-indolylacetic acid functionally modified this site, decreasing the availability of the site for the binding of L-tryptophan. Incubation in the presence of a large excess of L-tryptophan resulted in the partial protection of the site from modification by 1-(m-bromoacetamidobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-3-indolylacetic acid.     

Calcified solitary renal cyst in childhood

There is a 20% incidence of malignancy in renal masses with rim calcification in adults. A case of rim calcification in a solitary renal cyst in a child is presented and the diagnostic approach and surgical management are described. Solitary renal cysts are extremely rare in children, with no reported cases of rim calcification.     

Serial carcinoembryonic antigen assays in patients with metastatic carcinoma of prostate being treated with chemotherapy

Serial carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) assays were conducted in patients with endocrine-unresponsive prostatic adenocarcinoma who were being treated with multidrug chemotherapy. Changes in CEA correlated with the clinical status of the patient in 70 per cent of the determinations and were more accurate than acid phosphatase in monitoring the response to treatment.
