The allelopathic weed Russian knapweed (Centaurea repens) was found to contain polyacetylenes VIII–XIV in the roots. Dose vs. response of the root length elongation against lettuce, alfalfa, barnyard grass, and red millet showed IX to be active. Closely related isomers were not active. Examination of the soil surrounding the Russian knapweed roots revealed the presence of IX in sufficient concentration to have an appreciable effect on the surrounding plant community.  相似文献

Sludge reduction and dewatering is an important aspect of water and waste water treatment. This is especially true in the case of Australia's Antarctic contaminated site remediation program, where the reduction in volume of wastes to be returned to Australia can lead to significant transport and handling cost savings. The dewatering characterisation of water treatment sludges from an Antarctic contaminated site was conducted using a theory of suspension dewatering developed by Buscall, Landman and White. This theory uses fundamental material properties of compressibility and permeability to determine the diffusivity of a suspension. Diffusivity is a useful property that can be used to directly compare the dewaterability of various sludges. In this investigation, several water treatment sludges were collected and characterised in the field to determine the impact of temperature and additives on compressibility, permeability and diffusivity. The Antarctic sludges were found to be less compressible and less permeable than materials such as mineral suspensions and alum water treatment sludges. Compressibility was found to decrease with the addition of powdered coagulation aids such as bentonite and chitosan.  相似文献

The effect of adding urea to the dyebath on the rate of absorption of reactive and acid dyes by wool, and of acid dyes by other protein bres, has been studied. Possible modesof action of aqueous solutions of urea on wool are discussed. The observed increase in the ite of dyeing in the presence of urea is due to disaggregation of the dye in solution and reduction in dye-protein hydrophobic interactions. The action of urea in promoting fibre swelling is also likely to be a contributory factor.  相似文献

An infrared absorption spectroscopy study of the curing kinetics of a low (1.12) epoxide/hydroxyl-group ratio bisphenol A epoxy resin—phthalic anhydride system is reported. A full infrared peak assignment to molecular vibrational modes is given for the range 400 to 4000 cm?1, and the optical density behavior of all peaks during reaction is discussed in detail. Proposed rival reaction mechanisms are considered and their respective kinetic behavior discussed. The reaction was found to follow consecutive-step addition esterification and simultaneous addition etherification, and epoxide—hydroxyl group and carboxylic acid dimer hydrogen bonding was found to occur. The reaction behavior supports a proposed hydroxyl group-limited inhomogeneous bulk reaction mechanism of a colloid type.  相似文献

Pt–Mo alloy electrocatalysts were prepared by an arc-melting furnace process to investigate the origin of their enhanced activity toward ethanol oxidation. Two Mo contents were chosen in zones of the binary phase diagram where they are supposed to form either a pure alloy mixture or a solid solution. Pt–Mo alloy catalysts were more active than Pt-alone. Gradual Mo dissolution at the electrode surface was observed after voltammetric and chronoamperometric measurements. The dissolved Mo contributed to the catalytic effect of the electrode as underpotentially deposited (upd) adatoms. This dissolution probably also leads to an increase in the electrode surface roughness. Low molybdenum content in the electrode material enhances the activity toward ethanol oxidation when compared to Pt-alone. Ethanol oxidation was also investigated by in situ infrared reflectance spectroscopy in order to determine the presence of adsorbed intermediates like CO species. Acetaldehyde, acetic acid and CO2 were also found by spectroscopic experiments.  相似文献

First, we give a loopless algorithm for generating binary strings with any weight range in which successive strings have Levenshtein distance two. Second, we construct de Bruijn sequences for (i) ?=0 and any u (maximum specified weight), (ii) any ? and u=n (minimum specified weight), and (iii) odd u?? (even size weight range). For example, all binary strings with n=6, ?=1, and u=4 appear once (cyclically) in . We also investigate the recursive structure of our order and show that it shares certain sublist properties with lexicographic order.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) films were treated with aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions of different concentrations for various times. The rate of weight loss increased with the addition of a swelling agent (methylene chloride) or a cationic surfactant. The surface roughness of the treated films was determined from atomic force microscopy (AFM) and pore diameter was obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In general, surface roughness was found to increase with increasing weight loss for the treated films. A maximum roughness was obtained for samples with a weight loss of approximately 15-20%, beyond which the roughness of the samples decreased. The addition of methylene chloride and surfactant resulted in an almost two-fold increase in the roughness for all treatment times investigated. The adhesion of electrolessly plated platinum film was dependent on the contact area produced by chemical treatment. Treatments producing smaller diameter pores of greater depth gave better adhesion.  相似文献

A study has been made of the nature of the fracture surface of α-brass specimens after failure by stress-corrosion cracking in pH 7·2 Mattsson's solution. The yellow colour of the stress-corrosion fracture surface points to a possible inadequacy in the “tarnish-rupture” model of the mechanism of this instance of stress-corrosion. The techniques of cathodic reduction and chemical dissolution have been used to remove any oxide present on the original fracture surface. On subsequent re-immersion in pH 7·2 Mattsson's solution, the stress-corrosion fracture surface remains untarnished, whereas the mechanical fracture surface rapidly acquires a black tarnish film. Comparison of plateau lengths obtained on further cathodic reduction has shown that for equivalent times of re-immersion, a much thicker film forms on the mechanical fracture region than on the stress-corrosion region of the fracture surface. The experimental results are interpreted as being inconsistent with the “tarnish-rupture” model but consistent with a stress-corrosion mechanism involving dezincification at the crack tip.  相似文献

The use of a microfluidic device in determining the extraction kinetics of CoII ions by di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (DEHPA) was demonstrated. Experimental data obtained using a Y-Y-shaped microchannel were modelled using a finite volume method. The contributions of diffusion and reaction transport resistances to the overall rate of mass transfer were obtained. A diffusion-controlled transfer assumption could not account for the experimental data, confirming that transport occurs under a mixed reaction–diffusion resistance regime. The reaction rate constant was determined to be $(2.4 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-10}$  m/s, in good agreement with corresponding Lewis cell measurements from the literature.  相似文献

We have developed a diode laser apparatus to excite Li from its ground 2S state, through 2P and 3S, to its Rydberg states with three cw diode lasers operating at λ = 671 nm, 813 nm, and 630-635 nm. A He-Ne laser at λ = 633 is sometimes used in place of the 635-nm diode laser for the last step. The output power of each of these lasers was ~1 mW. We describe our technique of locking the first two lasers on Li resonance lines by obtaining a fluorescent signal from the second decay (3S ? 2P) that is normally overpowered by a strong background of fluorescent light from the first decay (2P ? 2S). We used two balanced photodiodes to reject the strong fluorescent light without loss of collection efficiency. A rejection ratio as high as 100 has been obtained.  相似文献
