Arsenic is a natural tasteless and odourless element,existing in the earth’s crust at average levels of between two and five thousands micrograms per liter (parts per million) . Arsenic is highly toxic to humans, who are exposed to it primarily from air,food and water. The occurrence of arsenic in groundwater is due to geological composition of soil. High concentrations of arsenic in water are the result of dissolution or desorption of ferric oxides and the oxidation of mineral arsenopyrites. Arsenic in drinking water has an important impact on the human health,especially in the less developed countries. Different methods exist to remove arsenic from aquatic media,and one of them is by adsorption. In this work,the adsorption of both As(III) and As(V) by means of novel microspheres has been investigated. In particular,TiO2 has been embedded into polymeric microspheres PES (PolyEtherSulphone) and PEEK-WC (PolyEtherEther-Ketone) . The hypervelocity impact facility at Space Research Institute (SRI), Auburn University has recently completed a facility upgrade that permits the impact testing of space materials within the cryogenic and elevated temperature range. Sample temperatures within the range of 40–450 K have been achieved for polymer films. These wide temperature range capabilities add to the facilities current testing experience with impact initiated plasma discharge testing for solar cell arrays. The facility utilizes a plasma drag gun to accelerate a variety simulated micrometeorite materials in the 50–150 μm range to velocities between 5 and 12 km/s. For each test 5–50 particles impact the surface of the target sample within an impact area of approximately 15 cm in diameter. The test chamber can accommodate samples up to a meter wide for ambient and heated tests, and 48 cm for cryogenic samples. The gun and test chambers are evacuated by He cryopumps and dry roughing pumps to produce a clean, oil free environment. Utilizing a streak camera and PMT detection system, the correspondence between individual particle size, speed and impact site can be determined. Standard post-analysis yields: micrographs of each impact site, dimensions of the pertinent impact characteristics, individual particle velocity and size estimates. 相似文献

Water quenching plays an important role in metallurgical and materials manufacturing operations to control both the temperature
of the product during processing and its final microstructure. In order to control a water-quench process, the surface heat-transfer
coefficient or heat flux must be quantified accurately. A common procedure to do this is to use an inverse heat conduction
(IHC) model to estimate the heat-transfer boundary condition (heat flux or heat- transfer coefficient) based on the measured
thermal history during the quench operation at a known interior location in the sample. Traditionally, thermocouples (TCs)
have been extensively used during quench tests to measure the sample temperature history. This article will examine the effect
of the hole used to insert the thermocouple into the sample and its orientation with respect to the quenched surface, on the
perturbation in the thermal field around the TC measurement point during water-quench operations characterized by boiling
heat transfer. The effect of some other factors on the perturbation of the thermal field at the TC measurement point during
water-quench operations such as the diameter of the thermocouple hole, thermocouple distance from the quench surface, sample
thermal conductivity, and quench intensity were also investigated. A two-dimensional (2-D) axisymmetric IHC model developed
at the University of British Columbia is used to estimate the error in the predicted heat fluxes based on the thermal history
measured at the thermocouple measurement point. The study showed, for some quench conditions, that the thermocouple hole must
be included in the IHC analysis as an independent body with its own thermophysical and geometrical characteristics. Validation
of these model-predicted results was done using water-quench experiments performed on samples of steel and aluminum plates
at the University of British Columbia. Using the Biot number (Bi), a simple criterion is developed to determine when the TC

Attachment of an adenovirus (Ad) to a cell is mediated by the capsid fiber protein. To date, only the cellular fiber receptor for subgroup C serotypes 2 and 5, the so-called coxsackievirus-adenovirus receptor (CAR) protein, has been identified and cloned. Previous data suggested that the fiber of the subgroup D serotype Ad9 also recognizes CAR, since Ad9 and Ad2 fiber knobs cross-blocked each other's cellular binding. Recombinant fiber knobs and 3H-labeled Ad virions from serotypes representing all six subgroups (A to F) were used to determine whether the knobs cross-blocked the binding of virions from different subgroups. With the exception of subgroup B, all subgroup representatives cross-competed, suggesting that they use CAR as a cellular fiber receptor as well. This result was confirmed by showing that CAR, produced in a soluble recombinant form (sCAR), bound to nitrocellulose-immobilized virions from the different subgroups except subgroup B. Similar results were found for blotted fiber knob proteins. The subgroup F virus Ad41 has both short and long fibers, but only the long fiber bound sCAR. The sCAR protein blocked the attachment of all virus serotypes that bound CAR. Moreover, CHO cells expressing human CAR, in contrast to untransformed CHO cells, all specifically bound the sCAR-binding serotypes. We conclude therefore that Ad serotypes from subgroups A, C, D, E, and F all use CAR as a cellular fiber receptor. 相似文献

This work describes the present methodology used on Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) aircrafts for fatigue life assessment to maintain its structural integrity. This methodology uses experimental flight data collected by airborne instrumentation systems. The recorded data are analysed for the prediction of the crack growth of defects at critical components of the aircraft and this information is then used for planning non‐destructive inspections, maintenance, logistical support and operational usage of the various fleets. Abstract The propagation of a television (TV) signal is usually perturbed during periods of atmospheric disturbance such as in thunderstorms. The region under investigation here is situated in the coastal area of the Bay of Bengal and has experienced frequent thunderstorm activities. An investigation to study their effects on VHF signal propagation transmitted from Satkhira in Bangladesh and received at the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, has been undertaken. The depths of the atmospheric disturbances within a 1?km range have been recorded and measured by acoustic sounder (sodar) operated continuously at the receiving station. Lambic is a type of Belgian beer obtained by spontaneous fermentation of wort. The fermentation in casks takes almost two years, and after that period the beer may be re-fermented in bottles and is then called gueuze. To gain insight into the many microbiological transformations occurring during this process, a qualitative and quantitative study of several components formed over a two-year period was undertaken. It was found that lambic and gueuze are characterized by high contents of ethyl acetate, ethyl lactate, lactic acid and acetic acid. Two phases of fermentation may be distinguished: a primary phase lasting for about three months during which almost all the ethanol and higher alcohols are formed and a very long secondary phase during which lactic acid is formed first, followed by ethyl lactate. Some lower fatty acids, including all the acetic acid, are made at the very beginning of the first phase. An important part of the ethyl acetate is made during the first phase but the amounts increase slowly to high levels during the second phase. Unusually low amounts of isoamyl acetate are detected. Several components are above the reported threshold levels of taste and are thus probably involved in the genesis of the typical aroma of lambic and gueuze. These results will allow a further study of the relations between the components found and the microbial populations involved in the spontaneous fermentation inherent in the brewing of lambic and gueuze. 相似文献

X‐ray diffraction techniques were used to determine the phase boundaries of the In2O3 solid solution phase in the Ga2O3–In2O3–SnO2 ternary system. The effects of Ga and Sn content on the unit cell dimensions of the bixbyite phase were calculated by a linear regression fit, the results of which indicate the two substitutive cations have opposite and independent effects on the lattice parameter. These results suggest that the cations do not strongly interact with each other in the crystal. Measurements of optoelectronic properties were also taken on single‐phase bulk specimens within the solid solution to establish their dependence on composition. As anticipated, Sn doping yields corresponding increases in conductivity, reduction in the absolute value of Seebeck coefficient, and increase in optical band gap. In contrast, these properties are not significantly affected by varying Ga content, confirming that Ga behaves as an isovalent dopant at the low doping levels involved. 相似文献
