Ascorbic acid stimulates chloride transport in the amphibian cornea

The cornea of the toad, Bufo marinus, actively transports chloride from the endothelial to the epithelial surface. This transport process has been related to the maintenance of the normal transparency of the cornea. Ion transport, as evidenced by the short-circuit current (SCC), is markedly stimulated by physiologic concentrations of ascorbic acid. Measurement of the unidirectional fluxes of 36Cl and 22Na shows that the increase in SCC is due primarily to a stimulation of the active transport of chloride.     

Development of a measure of negative attitudes toward masturbation.

Describes the development of a new, 30-item measure of negative attitudes toward masturbation and the relationships between negative attitudes toward masturbation, sex guilt, and frequency of masturbation in 96 male and 102 female undergraduates. 4 male and 4 female Es administered the Sex Guilt subscale of the Mosher Forced-Choice Guilt Inventory, a measure of sex experience by Brady and Levitt, and Abramson's measure of masturbation experience. Results provide validational evidence of the predictive usefulness of the measure. The item content, item analysis, factorial structure, and adequate split-half reliability (.75) attest to the psychometric soundness of the measure. Both guilt over sex and negative attitudes toward masturbation are suggested as 2 constructs with theoretical significance and usefulness in research in human sexuality as well as in treating some forms of sexual pathology. Non-equilibrium processes in poly(vinyl chloride) glasses vitrified at elevated pressures

The conformational and enthalpic changes that occur in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) glasses that have been vitrified from the melt under pressure have been examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and quantitative differential scanning calorimetry. It is shown that these pressures freeze in the high energy states that are characteristic of the vitrification temperature and increase the apparent glass transition temperature of the polymer. In addition, pressures in excess of the vitrification pressure, cause intermolecular effects that can be relaxed out below T_g. Both of these processes create characteristic endothermic and exothermic changes in the apparent heat capacity of the glass that appear over a period of time and are sensitive functions of the glass formation. processes as well as the subsequent annealing history. The endothermic events are interpreted as the stress perturbed volumetric relaxation process while the exotherms are associated with the release of the frozen in stresses.     

Genomic organization, fine-mapping, and expression of the human islet-brain 1 (IB1)/c-Jun-amino-terminal kinase interacting protein-1 (JIP-1) gene

Islet-brain 1 (IB1), a regulator of the pancreatic beta-cell function in the rat, is homologous to JIP-1, a murine inhibitor of c-Jun amino-terminal kinase (JNK). Whether IB1 and JIP-1 are present in humans was not known. We report the sequence of the 2133-bp human IB1 cDNA, the expression, structure, and fine-mapping of the human IB1 gene, and the characterization of an IB1 pseudogene. Human IB1 is 94% identical to rat IB1. The tissue-specific expression of IB1 in human is similar to that observed in rodent. The IB1 gene contains 12 exons and maps to chromosome 11 (11p11.2-p12), a region that is deleted in DEFECT-11 syndrome. Apart from an IB1 pseudogene on chromosome 17 (17q21), no additional IB1-related gene was found in the human genome. Our data indicate that the sequence and expression pattern of IB1 are highly conserved between rodent and human and provide the necessary tools to investigate whether IB1 is involved in human diseases.     

Segmental antigen challenge increases fibronectin in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid

Fibronectin may contribute to asthma pathogenesis by recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells, and by promotion of subepithelial fibrosis. Fibronectin is produced by several types of airway cells, including epithelial cells, fibroblasts, and alveolar macrophages. To test the hypothesis that antigen-induced airway inflammation is associated with increased local generation of fibronectin, segmental bronchoprovocation (SBP) with antigen and saline was performed in 17 atopic patients. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed at 5 min and 48 h after segmental challenge with saline or antigen. Fibronectin concentrations in BAL fluid, measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), increased more than 5-fold 48 h after antigen challenge (65 [47 to 110] versus 407 [240 to 697] ng/ml, median and 25 to 75% interquartiles, p < 0.05). Fibronectin concentrations 48 h after antigen challenge correlated with histamine concentrations 5 min after antigen challenge and numbers of eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, and total cells in BAL fluid 48 h after antigen challenge. BAL was more enriched in fibronectin 48 h after challenge than would be predicted solely from increased permeability of plasma proteins. Western blot analysis showed that fibronectin in BAL fluid was largely intact and contained the extra domain-A (ED-A) splice variant of cellular fibronectin, indicative of local production. We conclude that antigen challenge in atopic subjects causes increased production of fibronectin by airway cells and speculate that this response may contribute to airway remodeling in allergic inflammation.     

Transcrystalline morphology of nylon 6 on the surface of aramid fibers

In this paper, the isothermal crystallization of nylon 6 in the presence of Kevlar 129 fiber was investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM). The formation of a transcrystalline domain was found to be mainly controlled by crystallization conditions, such as the temperature of the isothermal crystallization, residual time at melting temperature and the cooling rate of the melt. The nucleation rate of nylon 6 on the fibers was mainly affected by the crystallization temperature. The interfacial transcrystallinity of nylon 6 occurred on the surface of Kevlar 129 fiber in the temperature range 130–190 °C. The reason for the formation of interfacial transcrystalline morphology is discussed from the molecular level, based on the understanding of the packing mode of nylon 6 chains around fibers and the interaction between matrix and fibers. It was found that the lattice matching and hydrogen‐bonding between nylon 6 and poly(p‐phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) crystals play an important role in the epitaxial crystallization. Poisoning and overdose

The differential diagnosis of all patients with altered mental status must include drug toxicity. In particular, intentional or unintentional overdosing and/or poisoning are common emergency department presenting complaints. A comprehensive approach to managing these patients must incorporate aggressive information gathering, a careful physical examination looking for toxic syndromes, and diagnostic testing. Proper decontamination is the key to effective management, as is the use of specific antidotes when indicated.
