High-throughput experimentation (HTE) is used for the screening of novel catalyst formulations via miniature agitated gas-liquid reactors with vessel volumes of an order of magnitude below the laboratory scale. An investigation of the macroscopic hydrodynamic performance of a miniaturised unbaffled stirred vessel of diameter 45 mm for an air-water system has been carried out at gassing rates of 0.25 and 0.5 vvm (dispersed flow regime) using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Measurements of bubble size and gas hold-up were also made. Eccentric agitation was employed as a means of breaking solid body rotation within the vessel, using a 6-blade, up-pumping pitched blade turbine. The gas phase was introduced via sintered glass panel spargers mounted in the vessel base. Two different configurations were used: firstly where the sparger located directly below the impeller, and secondly where the sparger was located opposite the impeller on the other side of the vessel. Measured distributions of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) for both gassed configurations were similar and showed significant differences to the ungassed case. Estimates of the gas-liquid interfacial area were at least 2-3 times higher than those found in conventional, lab-scale baffled vessels; this was attributed to the creation of very small bubbles at the sparger (). 相似文献
Previous work showed that females of the European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis Poppius (Heteroptera: Miridae), produced three chemicals, hexyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate, and (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal, and that these were suspected to be components of the female sex pheromone. In field experiments, traps baited with blends of these chemicals dispensed from polyethylene vials and sachets failed to catch significant numbers of males. Here, we report more recent field experiments in which the chemicals were released from glass microcapillary tubes. A blend of hexyl butyrate and (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal was significantly attractive to male L. rugulipennis. In addition, whereas the mixture of all three components attracted fewer L. rugulipennis males, this tertiary blend captured significantly greater numbers of males of the congeneric species Lygus pratensis than the binary mixture. The possible reasons for the success of the microcapillaries compared with other dispensers are discussed. 相似文献
The structure and properties of Mn-doped 0.67BiFeO3-0.33BaTiO3 ceramics are systematically investigated with respect to the effects of annealing prior to rapid cooling by quenching in air. Air-quenching induces a change in crystal structure from pseudo-cubic to rhombohedral, with higher quenching temperatures leading to an increased rhombohedral distortion. These structural changes are correlated with the appearance of more well-defined ferroelectric domain configurations. It is shown that the surface preparation procedures for XRD measurements can induce significant changes in the peak profiles, indicating differences in crystal structure between the surface and bulk regions. Frequency dispersion in the temperature-dependent relative permittivity for the as-sintered sample is significantly reduced after quenching, accompanied by enhancement of the Curie point and improved temperature-stability of piezoelectric properties. It is proposed that the formation of defect clusters by A-site cation diffusion during cooling is circumvented by quenching, leading to the observed modification of structural distortion and ferroelectric properties. 相似文献
The coconut rhinoceros beetle, Oryctes rhinoceros (Linnaeus 1758) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae) (CRB), is endemic to tropical Asia where it damages both coconut and oil palm. A new invasion by CRB occurred on Guam in 2007 and eradication attempts failed using commonly applied Oryctes rhinoceros nudivirus (OrNV) isolates. This and subsequent invasive outbreaks were found to have been caused by a previously unrecognized haplotype, CRB-G, which appeared to be tolerant to OrNV. The male-produced aggregation pheromone of the endemic, susceptible strain of O. rhinoceros (CRB-S) was previously identified as ethyl 4-methyloctanoate. Following reports from growers that commercial lures containing this compound were not attractive to CRB-G, the aim of this work was to identify the pheromone of CRB-G. Initial collections of volatiles from virgin male and female CRB-G adults from the Solomon Islands failed to show any male- or female-specific compounds as candidate pheromone components. Only after five months were significant quantities of ethyl 4-methyloctanoate and 4-methyloctanoic acid produced by males but not by females. No other male-specific compounds could be detected, in particular methyl 4-methyloctanoate, 4-methyl-1-octanol, or 4-methyl-1-octyl acetate, compounds identified in volatiles from some other species of Oryctes. Ethyl 4-methyloctanoate elicited a strong electroantennogram response from both male and female CRB-G, but these other compounds, including 4-methyloctanoic acid, did not. The enantiomers of ethyl 4-methyloctanoate and 4-methyloctanoic acid were conveniently prepared by enzymatic resolution of the commercially-available acid, and the enantiomers of the acid, but not the ester, could be separated by gas chromatography on an enantioselective cyclodextrin phase. Using this approach, both ethyl 4-methyloctanoate and 4-methyloctanoic acid produced by male CRB-G were shown to be exclusively the (R)-enantiomers whereas previous reports had suggested male O. rhinoceros produced the (S)-enantiomers. However, re-examination of the ester and acid produced by male CRB-S from Papua New Guinea showed that these were also the (R)-enantiomers. In field trapping experiments carried out in the Solomon Islands, both racemic and ethyl (R)-4-methyloctanoate were highly attractive to both male and female CRB-G beetles. The (S)-enantiomer and the corresponding acids were only weakly attractive. The addition of racemic 4-methyloctanoic acid to ethyl 4-methyloctanoate did significantly increase attractiveness, but the addition of (R)- or (S)-4-methyloctanoic acid to the corresponding ethyl esters did not. Possible reasons for the difference in assignment of configuration of the components of the CRB pheromone are discussed along with the practical implications of these results.
Lead-free Na0.5K0.5NbO3 (NKN) and Na0.475K0.475Li0.05NbO3 (NKLN) ceramics doped with CuO were prepared by the mixed oxide route. The powders were calcined at 850-930 °C and sintered at 850-1100 °C. Small additions of CuO reduced the sintering temperature and increased the density to 96% theoretical. Cu first appears to enter the A site then the B site. In NKLN the orthorhombic-tetragonal and tetragonal-cubic phase transitions are approximately 150 °C lower and 50 °C higher, respectively than in NKN. With increasing addition of Cu to NKN and NKLN the remanent polarization (Pr) increased and coercive field (Ec) decreased. NKLN prepared with 0.4 wt% CuO exhibited a saturation polarization (Psat) of 30 μC/cm2, remanent polarization (Pr) of 27 μC/cm2 and coercive field (Ec) of 1.0 kV/mm. CuO caused the NKLN ceramics to harden considerably; the mechanical quality factor (Qm) increased from 50 to 260, d33 ∼ 285 and piezoelectric coupling factors were >0.4. 相似文献
We report the validation of an expression to accurately describe the power draw of an in-line rotor–stator mixer over a range of flow rates and rotor speeds. The expression consists of a term which reflects the power required to rotate the shaft in response to the liquid resistance and a term to reflect the power convected away from the mixing chamber. A specially commissioned high speed (12,000 rpm), instrumented 150/250 MS Silverson mixer has been developed with power draw determined from both torque and calorimetric measurements. Experiments are carried out using water over a range of independently controlled flow rates and rotor speeds with losses for both techniques carefully accounted for. For the torque measurement the value of the constants for the two terms above are Poz=0.197 and k1=9.35, respectively. For the calorimetric technique the measured temperature rise was similar to some of the corrections and losses over a significant range of the experimental space but nevertheless with careful experimentation constants similar to those for the torque technique were obtained, Poz=0.229 and k1=7.46. Allowing the calibration of the temperature probes to be a fit parameter in the regression routine increased the value of k1=8.10 but did not affect the value of Poz. A simple graphical method is also proposed using a dimensionless form of the expression which yielded slightly higher value of Poz but a slightly lower value of k1. The accuracy of both measurement techniques improves with rotor speed and the differences between the constants is attributed to the better accuracy of the torque technique at higher flow rates whereas the calorimetric technique is more accurate at low flow rates where the temperature rise is larger. Several repeats of the calorimetric technique with a reduced set of experimental points show good reproducibility. Finally at low flow rates (<10% of the maximum) the power unexpectantly increases and a modification to the expression is proposed by considering the pumping efficiency. 相似文献
This article proposes methods for testing the null hypothesis that a number of so‐called long run canonical correlations (LRCCs) are zero. Two test statistics are proposed and their limiting distributions are derived under the null hypothesis. The finite sample properties of the tests are illustrated via a number of simulation studies that reveal the asymptotic theory provides a good guidance to behaviour in moderate or large sized samples. It is shown that the statistics provide a natural way for testing the asymptotic independence of two standardized sums. The usefulness of the tests is illustrated via the following examples: inference about cointegrating vector in a particular cointegration model; inference about break points in a cointegration model; moment estimation; parameter estimation in Generalized Method of Moments estimation. 相似文献
This paper describes the development of synthetic biology as a distinct entity from current industrial biotechnology and the implications for a future based on its concepts. The role of the engineering design cycle, in synthetic biology is established and the difficulties in making and exact analogy between the two emphasised. It is suggested that process engineers can offer experience in the application of synthetic biology to the manufacture of products which should influence the approach of the synthetic biologist. The style of teaching for synthetic biology appears to offer a new approach at undergraduate level and the challenges to the education of process engineers in this technology are raised. Possible routes to the development of synthetic biology teaching are suggested. 相似文献
The hydrolytic dehalogenation of rac‐1,3‐dibromobutane catalyzed by the haloalkane dehalogenase LinB from Sphingobium japonicum UT26 proceeds in a sequential fashion: initial formation of intermediate haloalcohols followed by a second hydrolytic step to produce the final diol. Detailed investigation of the course of the reaction revealed favored nucleophilic displacement of the sec‐halogen in the first hydrolytic event with pronounced R enantioselectivity. The second hydrolysis step proceeded with a regioselectivity switch at the primary position, with preference for the S enantiomer. Because of complex competition between all eight possible reactions, intermediate haloalcohols formed with moderate to good ee ((S)‐4‐bromobutan‐2‐ol: up to 87 %). Similarly, (S)‐butane‐1,3‐diol was formed at a maximum ee of 35 % before full hydrolysis furnished the racemic diol product. 相似文献
