Using data from the 1991 census

The 1991 census for England and Wales provides a substantial amount of data on demography, ethnicity, housing tenure, employment status, and other social factors for geographical areas ranging in size from enumeration districts upwards. Many in the health service and in the academic community are making use of the data in the 1991 census. However, users of census data need to be aware of the problems and limitations of these data, which include the format of the data, data modification and suppression, sampling error, and underenumeration. An important innovation of the 1991 census was that the census form included a question on the postcode of respondents; this allowed the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys to produce a postcode-enumeration district look up table which overcomes many of the problems previously encountered in trying to assign postcodes to enumeration districts. The new look up table also includes the grid reference of postcodes, and this will improve the geographical referencing of census data.     

Reliability of AllnAs/lnGaAs/lnP HEMT with WSi ohmic contacts

We have investigated the degradation mechanism of Al_0.48In_0.52As/In_0.53Ga_0.47As/ InP high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) using WSi ohmic electrodes. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation and en-ergy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analysis reveal impurities diffusion of gate electrode (titanium: Ti) and fluorine (F) in the AlInAs layer after a high temperature (T_a = 170°C operating life test for 500 h. The decrease of drain current (I_ds) during life test shows linear dependence on square root of aging time. It suggests that the degradation is controlled by a diffusion mechanism. Hence, the estimated degradation mechanism of this device is related with decrease of carrier concentration in the epitaxial layer by these diffused impurities. On the other hand, TEM and EDX show no degradation of WSi/InGaAs interface after aging. Therefore, the WSi electrode for this type of HEMT demonstrates excellent high stability under the accelerated operating life test.     

Dreams in group therapy: a review of models

Dream work in therapeutic environments is reviewed, exploring the benefits and limitations of dreams. The application of dreams to groups and the impact of the work on group process and interaction is discussed. The integration of dream-work models within various group psychotherapeutic approaches is examined. A meta-classification of dream-work concludes the review.     

Hepatic toxicity associated with fluorouracil plus levamisole adjuvant therapy

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency and nature of hepatic toxicity associated with fluorouracil (5-FU) plus levamisole adjuvant therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients had resection of stage II or stage III colon cancer and were randomized to receive observation only, levamisole alone, or 5-FU plus levamisole. Serial liver function studies were documented in 1,025 patients who did not develop recurrence during the year of therapy. RESULTS: One hundred forty-nine (39.6%) of 376 patients treated with 5-FU plus levamisole showed laboratory abnormalities consistent with hepatic toxicity, compared with 16.3% of 251 patients treated with levamisole alone and 16.1% of 398 untreated controls. Most common was elevation of alkaline phosphatase, frequently accompanied by elevations of transaminase or serum bilirubin. Characteristically, these changes were mild, not associated with symptoms, and resolved when therapy was stopped. In some instances, they were associated with elevated carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) tests or with fatty liver seen on computed tomographic (CT) scan or liver biopsy. CONCLUSION: Mild and reversible hepatotoxicity is a common consequence of 5-FU plus levamisole adjuvant therapy, but this is only rarely symptomatic. However, the oncologist should be alert to this phenomenon, since the associated laboratory and imaging findings may simulate those associated with hepatic metastasis.
