The objectives of the study were to compare the ovarian activity of Holstein-Friesian (CH HF), Fleckvieh (CH FV) and Brown Swiss (CH BS) dairy cows of Swiss origin with that of Holstein-Friesian (NZ HF) dairy cows of New Zealand origin, the latter being used as a reference for reproductive performance in pasture-based seasonal calving systems. Fifty, second-lactation NZ HF cows were each paired with a second-lactation Swiss cow (17, 15 and 18 CH HF, CH FV and CH BS respectively) in 13 pasture-based, seasonal-calving commercial dairy farms in Switzerland. Ovarian activity was monitored by progesterone profiling from calving to first breeding service. CH BS cows produced less energy-corrected milk (mean 22·8 kg/d) than the other breeds (26·0-26·5 kg/d) during the first 100 d of lactation. CH HF cows had the lowest body condition score (BCS) at calving and the greatest BCS loss from calving to 30 d post partum. Commencement of luteal activity (CLA) was later for NZ HF than for CH FV (51·5 v. 29·2 d; P <0·01), with CH HF and CH BS intermediate (43 d). On average, NZ HF and CH HF cows had one oestrous cycle before the onset of the seasonal breeding period; this was less (P<0·01) than either CH FV (1·7) or CH BS (1·6). There was a low prevalence of luteal persistency (3%) among the studied cows. First and second oestrous cycle inter-ovulatory intervals did not differ between breeds (20·5-22·6 d). The luteal phase length of CH BS during the second cycle was shorter (10·6 d) than that of the other breeds (13·8-16·0 d), but the inter-luteal interval was longer (9·8 d v. 7·0-8·0 d). The results suggest that the Swiss breeds investigated have a shorter interval from calving to CLA than NZ HF cows. 相似文献

Despite the importance of mechanical compliance in most applications of semiconducting polymers, the effects of structural parameters of these materials on their mechanical properties are typically not emphasized. This paper examines the effect of length of the pendant group on the tensile modulus and brittleness for a series of regioregular poly(3‐alkylthiophenes) (P3ATs) and their blends with a soluble fullerene derivative, PCBM. The tensile modulus decreases with increasing length of the alkyl side‐chain, from 1.87 GPa for butyl side chains to 0.16 GPa for dodecyl chains. The moduli of P3AT:PCBM blends films are greater than those of the pure polymers by factors of 2–4. A theoretical model produces a trend in the effect of alkyl side chain on tensile modulus that follows closely to the experimental measurements. Tensile modulus correlates with brittleness, as the strain at which cracks appear is 6% for P3BT and >60% for P3OT. Adhesion of the P3AT film to a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate is believed to play a role in an apparent increase in brittleness from P3OT to P3DDT. The additive 1,8‐Diiodooctane (DIO) reduces the modulus of P3HT:PCBM blend by a factor of 3. These results could enable mechanically robust, flexible, and stretchable electronics. 相似文献

This paper presents an efficient algorithm that automatically generates a parallel program from a dependence-based representation of a sequential program. The resulting parallel program consists of nested fork-join constructs, composed from the loops and statements of the sequential program. Data dependences are handled by two techniques. One technique implicitly satisfies them by sequencing, thereby reducing parallelism. Where increased parallelism results, the other technique eliminates them by privatization: the introduction of process-specific private instances of variables. Additionally, the algorithm determines when copying values of such instances in and out of nested parallel constructs results in greater parallelism. This is the first algorithm for automatically generating parallelism for such a general model. The algorithm generates as much parallelism as is possible in our model while minimizing privatization.An earlier version of this paper was presented at the First Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Vector and Parallel Machines, which was held at Cornell University in August 1988. A simple testing method is used to compare the yield strengths (YS) of biaxially textured metallic substrates (Ni and its
alloys) presently under development for YBa2Cu3O7−x
coated conductors. This method is based on a retired ASTM D3379 tensile test standard method that was originally recommended
for single filament materials. Several common textured substrates, such as Ni, Ni-3at.%W, and Ni-5at.%W, procured from different
manufacturers, were tested using this method, and the data were compared with the values reported in the literature. A new
alloy substrate (constantan (Cu55-Ni44-Mn1wt.%)) that is biaxially textured in-house was also tested using this method, and
the YS data were compared with those of other substrates. For the substrates used in this study, the data obtained using this
method indicated that Ni substrates have YS of ∼52 MPa, Ni-3at.%W substrates have YS of ∼106 MPa, Ni-5at.%W substrates have

BACKGROUND: To demonstrate the injury patterns of Alpine skiing and snowboarding in a northeastern state and evaluate potential risk factors. METHODS: The medical records of a single pediatric and adult Level I trauma center were evaluated from January 1, 1990, through December 31, 1995. All admissions with injuries caused by Alpine skiing or snowboarding were reviewed. Those patients arriving from two local ski resorts, all of whose injuries are referred to the institution for care, were separated out for consideration. Age, sex, type of injury, date of injury, Injury Severity Score, operations performed, and outcome (including mortality) were evaluated. In addition, resort utilization for the study period was obtained from the two resorts included in the evaluation. Mortality data was obtained from the Vermont office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the same time period. RESULTS: For the 6-year period of the study approximately 2,978,000 skier and snowboarder days were recorded at the study sites. Approximately 447,000 of those days were attributed to snowboarders (15%). In all, 279 patients were admitted for injuries (0.01%), 238 were related to Alpine skiing (incidence 0.01%) and 40 to snowboarding (incidence 0.01%). Snowboarders were statistically younger (20 years; range, 4-44 years) than skiers (29 years; range, 6-70 years) (p < 0.001) and had a significantly lower Injury Severity Score (15 in snowboarders vs. 27 in skiers, p < 0.03). Two female patients were injured snowboarding and 68 female patients were injured skiing. Eight percent of injured snowboarders and 16% of injured skiers sustained multiple injuries (p < 0.01). Injury patterns were significantly different. Upper extremity injuries were almost exclusively found in snowboarders (24% vs. 7%, p < 0.003), whereas cruciate ligament injuries occurred far more commonly in skiers (45% vs. 4%, p < 0.001 Lower extremity injuries in general were more common in skiers (78% vs. 38%, p < 0.001). Central nervous system injuries, including head and spine, were evenly distributed over the two groups, although the snowboarders with central nervous system injuries were younger. In addition, splenic injuries were more common in snowboarders (13% vs. 2%, p < 0.01). Snowboarding accidents were far more common in December, March, and April than other months. Fifty-one patients sustained abdominal or chest injuries and only two of these required operative intervention (two splenectomies). Other operative interventions were limited to extremity injuries, injuries of the spine, or placement of an intracranial pressure monitor. There were no fatalities recorded in this population, although over the 6.5 years, there were 25 deaths related to alpine skiing and one to snowboarding in the State (incidence 0.0000009 skier days). Victims tended to be male: 96% of the skiers and the one snowboarder. The predominant cause of death was blunt head trauma followed by blunt chest trauma. Helmets were not worn by those sustaining head injuries or fatalities. Spine injuries were recorded only in extremely young snowboarders and skiers out of control. CONCLUSION: Snowboarders and Alpine skiers are equally prone to injury. Snowboarding accidents are typically less severe and show significantly different injury patterns than skiing accidents. Abdominal and chest injuries in this population are generally amenable to nonoperative management. Prevention programs are best targeted at safe skiing and snowboarding practices, not skiing or snowboarding in poor conditions, use of helmets for skiers, and restraint of snowboard use in very young children. 相似文献

Neuropeptide Y is an abundant and physiologically important peptide in vertebrates having effects on food intake, sexual behaviour, blood pressure and circadian rhythms. Neuropeptide Y homologues have been found in invertebrates, where they are very likely to play similar, important roles. Although five neuropeptide Y-receptor subtypes have been identified in mammals, none has been reported from invertebrates. Here we describe the cloning of a neuropeptide Y-receptor from the brain of the snail Lymnaea stagnalis. The identity of the receptor was deduced by expressing the neuropeptide Y-receptor-encoding cDNA in Chinese Hamster Ovary cells, which were subsequently challenged with size-fractionated Lymnaea brain extracts. An active peptide, selected on the basis of its ability to induce changes in cAMP levels, was purified to homogeneity, analysed by mass spectrometry and amino acid sequence determination, and turned out to be a Lymnaea homologue of neuropeptide Y. 相似文献

Results of intradermal skin test responses to the same panel of 53 allergens were compared in 118 dogs with atopic disease presented at two geographical centres, Edinburgh (87 cases) and London (31 cases). The allergens most commonly positive at both centres were human dander and Dermatophagoides farinae, but positive tests to all of the allergens used occurred in at least one case. The mean number of allergens to which positive tests resulted in atopic dogs was 5.126 (Edinburgh) and 5.129 (London). The majority of animals were sensitive to allergens from more than one group. A significantly higher number of positive reactors to house dust allergen was observed at London than at Edinburgh (P < 0.05), while a significantly higher number of positive reactions to grass pollens was detected at Edinburgh than in London (P < 0.05). Sensitivity to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, in the absence of sensitivity to D. farinae, was uncommon and therefore both of these mite allergens should be incorporated in intradermal skin testing panels in Great Britain. 相似文献

Tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) is the first enzyme in both serotonin and melatonin biosynthesis in neuroendocrine cells of the pineal gland. The lack of immortalized neuroendocrine pineal cell lines has been a major obstacle to the study of the tissue-specific and circadian regulation of TPH gene expression in the pineal gland. Previously, we demonstrated that a 6.1 kb 5' upstream region of the mouse TPH gene directs the restricted expression of a lacZ reporter gene to the pineal gland and the raphe nuclei of transgenic mice. Therefore, to develop TPH-expressing pineal cell lines we first established transgenic mice carrying a construct consisting of 6.1 kb of 5' flanking region fused to the SV40 T-antigen. These animals developed highly invasive pineal tumors and died at 12-15 weeks of age. The pineal tumors obtained from the transgenic mice were utilized to establish the immortalized pinealocyte-derived cell lines. These cells express two marker enzymes, TPH and serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT). In pineal gland TPH and NAT expressions have been known to be regulated during circadian cycle. The two established cell lines therefore promise to be a valuable in vitro model system for the study of the rhythmic nature of the pineal function at molecular level in mammal. 相似文献
