Variables in the Hiring Equation: Ensuring that the Right Candidate is Hired

When making the decision to hire one of several equally qualified candidates, IS managers fall back on their instincts and choose the candidate that “feels right.” They rely on personal chemistry, which is one of the variables in the hiring equation. Other equally important elements are: aptitude, attitude, and motivational factors.     

Technological solutions and adaptive processing tools to mitigate the impact of seasonal variations in milk composition on Cheddar cheese production—A review

Variability in milk composition and physicochemical properties impact both manufacturing process performance and the end-use functionality of cheese. Such variability may be attributed to seasonal calving patterns, production systems, breed, weather patterns, and feed type and significantly impacts concentrations of macro- and microconstituents and ultimately cheese composition and quality. This article reviews technological approaches (e.g., milk standardisation protocols and calcium addition), and predictive strategies (e.g., predictive models for coagulation and curd cutting time, in-line sensors), used to mitigate the effects of seasonal changes in milk composition and their impact on process efficacy and functionality in Cheddar cheese manufacturing.     

Cell-free apoptosis in Xenopus egg extracts: inhibition by Bcl-2 and requirement for an organelle fraction enriched in mitochondria

Apoptotic cell death involves a ritual series of morphological changes, presumably reflecting a conserved molecular pathway. We now report that the nuclear events typical of apoptosis can be reproduced in "apoptotic" Xenopus egg extracts. In this cell-free system, nuclear assembly and protein import are initially normal; after 2-4 hr, however, a process of nuclear destruction ensues involving chromatin condensation and the shrinkage and fragmentation of the nuclei. This apoptotic process, which also occurs in nuclei added exogenously, is blocked by the addition of baculovirus-expressed Bcl-2 protein. To block the disintegration of nuclei that are added later, Bcl-2 must be present during this latent period. "Apoptosis" in these extracts requires a dense organelle fraction enriched in mitochondria. The cell-free system described here provides a novel tool for understanding intracellular events in apoptosis and the inhibitory function of Bcl-2.
