A fractured sandstone aquifer at an industrial site in southern California is contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE) and cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) to depths in excess of 244 m. Field monitoring data suggest that TCE is undergoing reduction to cis-DCE and that additional attenuation is occurring. However, vinyl chloride (VC) and ethene have not been detected in significant amounts, so that if transformation is occurring, a process other than reductive dechlorination must be responsible. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of biotic and abiotic transformation processes at this site for TCE, cis-DCE, and VC. Anaerobic microcosms were constructed with site groundwater and sandstone core samples. 14C-labeled compounds were used to detect transformation products (e.g., CO2 and soluble products) that are not readily identifiable by headspace analysis. The microcosms confirmed the occurrence of biotic reduction of TCE to cis-DCE, driven by electron donor in the groundwater and/or sandstone. VC and ethene were not detected. Following incubation periods up to 22 months, the distribution of 14C indicated statistically significant transformation of [14C]TCE and [14C]cis-DCE in live microcosms, to as high as 10% 14CO2 from TCE and 20% 14CO2 from cis-DCE. In autoclaved microcosms, significant transformation of [14C]TCE and [14C]cis-DCE also occurred; although some 14CO2 accumulated, the predominant 14C product was soluble and could not be stripped by N2 from an acidic solution (referred to as nonstrippable residue, or NSR). Characterization of the NSR by high-performance liquid and ion chromatography identified glycolate, acetate, and formate as significant components. These results suggest that a combination of abiotic and biotic transformation processes is responsible for attenuation of TCE and cis-DCE in the fractured sandstone aquifer. Tracking the distribution of 14C during the microcosm study was essential for observing these phenomena.  相似文献

The problem of semi-automatic segmentation has attracted much interest over the last few years. The Random Walker algorithm [1] has proven to be quite a popular solution to this problem, as it is able to deal with several components and models the image using a convenient graph structure. We propose two improvements to the image graph used by the Random Walker method. First, we propose a new way of computing the edge weights. Traditionally, such weights are based on the similarity between two neighbouring pixels, using their greyscale intensities or colours. We substitute a new definition of weights based on the probability distributions of colours. This definition is much more robust than traditional measures, as it allows for textured objects, and objects that are composed of multiple perceptual components. Second, the traditional graph has a vertex set which is the set of pixels and edges between each pair of neighbouring pixels. We substitute a smaller, irregular graph based on Mean Shift oversegmentation. This new graph is typically several orders of magnitude smaller than the original image graph, which can lead to a major savings in computing time. We show results demonstrating the substantial improvement achieved when using the proposed image graph.  相似文献

This paper reports on technology developments aimed at improving the state of the art for image-guided minimally invasive spine procedures. Back pain is a major health problem with serious economic consequences. Minimally invasive procedures to treat back pain are rapidly growing in popularity due to improvements in technique and the substantially reduced trauma to the patient versus open spinal surgery. Image guidance is an enabling technology for minimally invasive procedures, but technical problems remain that may limit the wider applicability of these techniques. The paper begins with a discussion of low back pain and the potential shortcomings of open back surgery. The advantages of minimally invasive procedures are enumerated, followed by a list of technical problems that must be overcome to enable the more widespread dissemination of these techniques. The technical problems include improved intraoperative imaging, fusion of images from multiple modalities, the visualization of oblique paths, percutaneous spine tracking, mechanical instrument guidance, and software architectures for technology integration. Technical developments to address some of these problems are discussed next. The discussion includes intraoperative computerized tomography (CT) imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/CT image registration, three-dimensional (3-D) visualization, optical localization, and robotics for percutaneous instrument placement. Finally, the paper concludes by presenting several representative clinical applications: biopsy, vertebroplasty, nerve and facet blocks, and shunt placement. The program presented here is a first step to developing the physician-assist systems of the future, which will incorporate visualization, tracking, and robotics to enable the precision placement and manipulation of instruments with minimal trauma to the patient.  相似文献

We present analytical and simulation models that obtain the minimum number of required communication channels for subscriber units and their allocations so as to increase the level of the grade of service (GOS) per user of fixed wireless access communication systems (FWA or WACS). On the basis of the proposed analytical and simulation models, a new methodology of using user radio ports (RPs) is introduced for evaluating the optimal number of RP systems, their allocation policy, and their spatial distribution for different configurations. The vapor pressures of TATP over the temperature range 269.85–306.95 K and DADP over the temperature range 265.85–294.85 K were determined using a modified Knudsen effusion apparatus. The Clausius‐Clapeyron plot of log10(p(Pa)) with 1/T provided a straight line for each material. This expression for TATP is log10(p(Pa))=−(4497±80)/T(K)+(15.86±0.28) (error limits are 95 % confidence limits) and for DADP it is log10(p(Pa))=−(4417±137)/T(K)+(16.31±0.48). These expressions yield values of the vapor pressure at 298.15 K of 6 Pa for TATP and 17 Pa for DADP, and heats of sublimation of 86.2±1.5 kJ mol−1 for TATP and 84.6±2.6 kJ mol−1 for DADP. Attempts were made to determine the vapor pressure of HMTD but it appears to have a vapor pressure too low for our system to reliably determine. A two month experiment did provide an upper limit estimate for the vapor pressure of HMTD of approximately 0.04 Pa at room temperature. Melting point and melting point range were used as verification of the identity and purity of the TATP and DADP used in these experiments, but this was not possible with HMTD since it detonates prior to melting.  相似文献
