This paper provides an overview of European activities in the field of optical local-area networks (LAN's). The fully developed systems are currently at the process control and automation stage. Comparative estimates of the cost effectiveness of optical and electrical LAN's in industrial applications favor the optical systems. To date, deterministic protocols have predominately been used. Statistical access protocols are favored by Ethernet and are gaining in importance. Recent developments aim at mixed protocols which allow simultaneous transmission of both speech and data. The most important characteristics and results obtained with different optical LAN's are compared in a table.  相似文献

The consumption of omega‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n‐3 PUFA) is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. Studies in animals and in vitro have demonstrated mechanisms that could explain this apparent effect, but clinical and epidemiological studies have returned conflicting results on the practical benefits of dietary n‐3 PUFA for prevention of breast cancer. Effects are often only significant within a population when comparing the highest n‐3 PUFA consumption group to the lowest n‐3 group or highest n‐6 group. The beneficial effects of n‐3 PUFA eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic on the risk of breast cancer are dose dependent and are negatively affected by total n‐6 consumption. The majority of the world population, including the most highly developed regions, consumes insufficient n‐3 PUFA to significantly reduce breast cancer risk. This review discusses the physiological and dietary context in which reduction of breast cancer risk may occur, some proposed mechanisms of action and meaningful recommendations for consumption of n‐3 PUFA in the diet of developed regions.  相似文献

The stability of the N-terminal domain of the ribosomal protein L9, NTL9, from Bacillus stearothermophilus has been monitored by circular dichroism at various temperatures and chemical denaturant concentrations in H2O and D2O. The basic thermodynamic parameters for the unfolding reaction, deltaH(o), deltaS(o), and deltaC(o)p, were determined by global analysis of temperature and denaturant effects on stability. The data were well fit by a model that assumes stability varies linearly with denaturant concentration and that uses the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation to model changes in stability with temperature. The results obtained from the global analysis are consistent with information obtained from individual thermal and chemical denaturations. NTL9 has a maximum stability of 3.78 +/- 0.25 kcal mol(-1) at 14 degrees C. DeltaH(o)(25 degrees C) for protein unfolding equals 9.9 +/- 0.7 kcal mol(-1) and TdeltaS(o)++(25 degrees C) equals 6.2 +/- 0.6 kcal mol(-1). DeltaC(o)p equals 0.53 +/- 0.06 kcal mol(-1) deg(-1). There is a small increase in stability when D2O is substituted for H2O. Based on the results from global analysis, NTL9 is 1.06 +/- 0.60 kcal mol(-1) more stable in D2O at 25 degrees C and Tm is increased by 5.8 +/- 3.6 degrees C in D2O. Based on the results from individual denaturation experiments, NTL9 is 0.68 +/- 0.68 kcal mol(-1) more stable in D2O at 25 degrees C and Tm is increased by 3.5 +/- 2.1 degrees C in D2O. Within experimental error there are no changes in deltaH(o) (25 degrees C) when D2O is substituted for H2O.  相似文献

This paper reports the potential of heterogeneous photocatalysis as an advanced oxidation technology for removal of toluene from air using TiO2 as a photocatalyst in building materials. First, the photocatalytic activity of two types of TiO2 containing building materials, i.e. roofing tiles and corrugated sheets, has been investigated at ambient conditions (T=25.0 °C; relative humidity RH=47%; toluene inlet concentration [TOL]in=17–35 ppbv). Toluene removal efficiencies up to 63% were observed at a gas residence time (τ) of 17 s. Second, the effect of RH (1–77%), [TOL]in (23–465 ppmv) and τ (17–115 s) on toluene removal has been systematically investigated using TiO2 containing roofing tiles as photocatalytic building materials. Results revealed lower toluene removal efficiencies at higher RH and [TOL]in, whereas a positive effect was observed with increased τ. Under optimal conditions, toluene removal efficiencies up to 78±2% and elimination rates higher than 100 mg h−1 m−2 roofing tile were obtained. A decline in photocatalytic activity by a factor of 2 was observed after operation at gas residence times shorter than 69 s and [TOL]in higher than 76 ppmv. Washing the building materials with deionized water, simulating rainfall, could partially (i.e. by a factor 1.3) regenerate the catalyst activity.  相似文献

The hypothesis of this investigation was that insulin and muscle contraction, by increasing the rate of skeletal muscle glucose transport, would bias control so that glucose delivery to the sarcolemma (and t tubule) and phosphorylation of glucose intracellularly would exert more influence over glucose uptake. Because of the substantial increases in blood flow (and hence glucose delivery) that accompany exercise, we predicted that glucose phosphorylation would become more rate determining during exercise. The transsarcolemmal glucose gradient (TSGG; the glucose concentration difference across the membrane) is inversely related to the degree to which glucose transport determines the rate of glucose uptake. The TSGG was determined by using isotopic methods in conscious rats during euglycemic hyperinsulinemia [Ins; 20 mU/(kg. min); n = 7], during treadmill exercise (Ex, n = 6), and in sedentary, saline-infused rats (Bas, n = 13). Rats received primed, constant intravenous infusions of trace 3-O-[3H]methyl-D-glucose and [U-14C]mannitol. Then 2-deoxy-[3H]glucose was infused for the calculation of a glucose metabolic index (Rg). At the end of experiments, rats were anesthetized, and soleus muscles were excised. Total soleus glucose concentration and the steady-state ratio of intracellular to extracellular 3-O-[3H]methyl-D-glucose (which distributes on the basis of the TSGG) were used to calculate ranges of possible glucose concentrations ([G]) at the inner and outer sarcolemmal surfaces ([G]im and [G]om, respectively). Soleus Rg was increased in Ins and further increased in Ex. In Ins, total soleus glucose, [G]om, and the TSGG were decreased compared with Bas, while [G]im remained near 0. In Ex, total soleus glucose and [G]im were increased compared with Bas, and there was not a decrease in [G]om as was observed in Ins. In addition, accumulation of intracellular free 2-deoxy-[3H]glucose occurred in soleus in both Ex and Ins. Taken together, these data indicate that, in Ex, glucose phosphorylation becomes an important limitation to soleus glucose uptake. In Ins, both glucose delivery and glucose phosphorylation influence the rate of soleus glucose uptake more than under basal conditions.  相似文献

Subsets of axons in the embryonic nervous system transiently express the glycoprotein TAG-1, a member of the subfamily of immunoglobulin (Ig)-like proteins that contain both C2 class Ig and fibronectin type III domains. TAG-1 is attached to the cell surface by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol linkage and is secreted by neurons. In vitro studies have shown that substrate-bound TAG-1 promotes neurite outgrowth. We have examined the nature of axonal receptors that mediate the neurite-outgrowth promoting properties of TAG-1. Although TAG-1 can mediate homophilic binding, neurite outgrowth on a substrate of TAG-1 does not depend on the presence of TAG-1 on the axonal surface. Instead, neurite outgrowth on TAG-1 is inhibited by polyclonal antibodies directed against L1 and, independently, by polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against beta 1-containing integrins. These results provide evidence that TAG-1 can interact with cell surfaces in both a homophilic and heterophilic manner and suggest that neurite extension on TAG-1 requires the function of both integrins and an L1-like molecule.  相似文献

D-[3-3H]-3-deoxy-3-fluoroglucose was synthesized chemically and shown to be transported into rat brain synaptosomes by a saturable process with a Km 6.2 x 10(-4) M and a Vmax 2.8 nmole x mg protein-1. After an initial, rapid period of transport, further uptake of the fluorosugar is restricted by the rate of its phosphorylation. Both D-glucose and cytochalasin B are competitive inhibitors of 3-deoxy-3-fluoro-D-glucose transport with Ki values of 93 micron and 6.0 x 10(-7) M, respectively. Phloretin, N-ethylmaleimide and p-chloromercuribenzoate also inhibit the fluorosugar uptake, whereas ouabain and changes in K+, Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions have only a small effect. The recorded 3-deoxy-3-fluoro-D-glucose influx is slightly reduced by potassium cyanide, antimycin A, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and rotenone. The uptake reduction caused by these four reagents is relieved by the addition of exogenous ATP. The possible influence of hexokinse activity on the uptake process is discussed.  相似文献

It was the aim of the present study to evaluate whether, in physiological cardiac tissue, long and short splice variants of G(s)alpha (the alpha subunit of the stimulatory G-protein) differ in their susceptibility to guanine nucleotide-mediated activation. As a measure of G(s)alpha activation, we determined the proportion of G(s)alpha subunits which were released from the plasma membrane upon stimulation. Membrane preparations from heart ventricles of Wistar rats were incubated with increasing concentrations of the non-hydrolyzable GTP analogue guanylyl-imidodiphosphate (GppNHp, 0-100 micromol/L) in the absence or presence of the beta-adrenoceptor agonist isoprenaline (1 micromol/L). The 45 and 52 kDa forms of G(s)alpha (G(s)alpha-S and -L, respectively) were measured in the supernatant of the incubation mixture by immunoblotting and densitometry. The increase in cyclic AMP induced by GppNHp was measured in the same supernatant. In the absence of isoprenaline, GppNHp increased cyclic AMP formation and the concentration-dependent release of G(s)alpha-L (Friedman test, P < 0.05), whereas the amount of soluble G(s)alpha-S was not affected. After addition of isoprenaline, the redistribution of G(s)alpha-S into the soluble fraction could be stimulated by GppNHp in a concentration-dependent manner (P < 0.05). Kinetic experiments revealed that activation of G(s)alpha-S by GppNHp was rather slow, but could be markedly enhanced by isoprenaline. Thus, it is likely that the different susceptibilities of G(s)alpha-S and -L towards GppNHp reflects differences in the rate of spontaneous GDP release.  相似文献

Cerebral palsy has an incidence of approximately 1/500 births, although this varies between different ethnic groups. Genetic forms of the disease account for approximately 1%-2% of cases in most countries but contribute a larger proportion in populations with extensive inbreeding. We have clinically characterized consanguineous families with multiple children affected by symmetrical spastic cerebral palsy, to locate recessive genes responsible for this condition. The eight families studied were identified from databases of patients in different regions of the United Kingdom. After ascertainment and clinical assessment, we performed a genomewide search for linkage, using 290 polymorphic DNA markers. In three families, a region of homozygosity at chromosome 2q24-q25 was identified between the markers D2S124 and D2S148. The largest family gave a maximum LOD score of 3.0, by multipoint analysis (HOMOZ). The maximum combined multipoint LOD score for the three families was 5.75. The minimum region of homozygosity is approximately 5 cM between the markers D2S124 and D2S2284. We have shown that a proportion of autosomal recessive symmetrical spastic cerebral palsy maps to chromosome 2q24-25. The identification of genes involved in the etiology of cerebral palsy may lead to improved management of this clinically intractable condition.  相似文献
