Multiparous SHN mice with spontaneous mammary tumors (5-10 mm in size) were given water extract of Guan-mu-tong (Gmt; Caulis aristolochiae manshuriensis) (0.5%) ad libitum as drinking water for 10 days. This treatment retarded significantly the growth of mammary tumors compared with the controls. By contrast, normal mammary gland growth, histology of adrenals and ovaries, and body weight were affected little by the Gmt treatment. Gmt appears to be the first agent inhibiting the growth of spontaneous mouse mammary tumors of palpable size by per os treatment.  相似文献

A Love-plate sensor, consisting of a surface skimming bulk wave (SSBW) device coated with a polymer layer, was found to increase the acoustic signal through coupling of the SSBW wave to a Love wave. Insertion loss, phase and frequency measurements were used to assess the optimum thickness of the polymer layer and the sensitivity of the device to mass-loading and viscous coupling.  相似文献

Reduced levels of serum albumin concentration, a routine blood test, within the "normal" range have been reported to be associated with mortality risk. The literature is reviewed, with a focus on cohort studies meeting specified criteria, and findings are summarized. In studies of many populations, comprising healthy subjects and patients with acute or chronic illness, serum albumin concentration is inversely related to mortality risk in a graded manner over its entire range; the estimated increase in the odds of death ranges from 24% to 56% for each 2.5 g/l decrement in serum albumin concentration. The association predicts overall and cause-specific mortality including cardiovascular mortality. It is likely that albumin concentration is a highly sensitive indicator of preclinical disease and disease severity. A direct protective effect of the albumin molecule is suggested by the persistence of the association after adjustment for other known risk factors and preexisting illness, and after exclusion of early mortality. Although biologically plausible, there is no direct evidence for this hypothesis. Serum albumin concentration is an independent predictor of mortality risk and could be useful in the quantification of risk in a broad range of clinical and research settings.  相似文献

As part of the UK Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food Directorate of Fisheries Research (MAFF/DFR) post-Chernobyl monitoring program, a detailed study was carried out of the change over time in dissolved-phase 137Cs concentrations in a number of lakes in Cumbria, UK. These measurements have been combined with published data on 137Cs in Cumbrian and other European lakes in order to develop and test a "double exponential" model for changes in lakewater concentrations: A exp(-k1t) + B exp(-k2t) where the exponential terms correspond, respectively, to the initial fast flush of activity through the system followed by longer-term transfers (timescale, years) from the catchment. Parameter values have been determined for this model by curve-fitting to the set of measurements of post-Chernobyl 137Cs activities in lakes. Values of fitted parameters are shown to be related, in a simple manner, to the physical characteristics of the system, in particular water residence time and mean lake depth. These parameters are generalized to give a simple empirical model for the full set of study lakes. The model is shown to give estimates of 137Cs activity to within a factor of 5 of field data for a period of several years after the fallout. Initial fractional losses of activity from catchment to lake were determined to be within the range 0.44-8.7% per year, declining exponentially with a mean rate constant 0.98 x 10(-3) d(-1).  相似文献

We analyze and test a laboratory benchtop version of a compound interferometric phase sensor, a Michelson interferometer whose output is combined coherently with a phase-modulated local oscillator beam tapped off the Michelson input beam. This configuration models a whole class of external-modulation interferometers designed to shift signals, obscured by low-frequency intensity noise of the light source, into a shot-noise-limited region of the photocurrent spectrum. We find analytically that the shot-noise-limited sensitivity achievable with this system is comparable with that obtained by using internal phase modulation, with both schemes suffering (for different reasons) approximately a 22% sensitivity penalty compared with ideal shot-noise-limited direct detection. Experimentally we achieve true shot-noise-limited sensitivity, and we investigate trade-offs necessitated by commonly encountered nonideal features in any external-modulation system. Our analytic model, which specifically accounts for Michelson fringe contrast, electronic receiver noise, phase-modulation depth, and the local oscillator tap-off fraction, is sufficiently accurate to predict the absolute sensitivity of our benchtop instrument to within 0.5 dB.  相似文献

There has been increasing interest in the semantic cognitive system in schizophrenia. Recent findings suggest a possible breakdown of semantic information processing in this disorder. The current study attempts to further examine semantic organization in schizophrenia. Twenty-eight chronic, early-onset schizophrenic patients and 32 controls were matched for premorbid intelligence and compared in their ability to spontaneously cluster exemplars from a specific category during a fluency task. Using multidimensional scaling and clustering techniques, 11 exemplars occurring most frequently in both groups were chosen for examination of their relative "proximity" during word generation. Patients with schizophrenia showed a less stable two-dimensional organization of exemplars and were less likely to group exemplars into subordinate clusters than were normals. These results suggest that semantic networks are disorganized in these patients. These findings may have some implications for the debate over the origin of "thought disorder" in schizophrenia.  相似文献

The expression of enkephalin and substance P messenger RNAs was examined in the caudate-putamen of human post mortem tissue from control and Huntington's disease tissue using in situ hybridization techniques and human specific enkephalin and substance P [35S] oligonucleotides. Macroscopic and microscopic quantification of enkephalin and substance P gene expression was carried out using computer-assisted image analysis. Tissue was collected from six control cases with no sign of neurological disease and six Huntington's disease cases ranging from grades 0 to 3 as determined by neuropathological evaluation. The clinical and pathological diagnosis of Huntington's disease was confirmed unequivocally by genetic analysis of the CAG repeat length in both copies of IT15, the Huntington's disease gene. A marked reduction in both enkephalin and substance P messenger RNAs was detected in all regions of the caudate nucleus and putamen in Huntington's disease grades 2/3 when compared to controls; in the dorsal caudate few enkephalin or substance P messenger RNA-positive cells were detected. For the early grade (0/1) Huntington's disease cases, a heterogeneous reduction in both enkephalin and substance P messenger RNAs were noted; for enkephalin messenger RNA the striatal autoradiograms displayed a conspicuous patchy appearance. Detailed cellular analysis of the dorsal caudate revealed a striking reduction in the number of enkephalin and substance P messenger RNA-positive cells detected and in the intensity of hybridization signal/cell. These data suggest that both the "indirect" GABA/enkephalin and "direct" GABA/substance P pathways are perturbed very early in the course of the disease and that these early changes in chemical signalling may possibly underlie the onset of clinical symptoms.  相似文献

We demonstrate the utility of indotricarbocyanine (Cy7) conjugates of the phycobiliproteins phycoerythrin (PE) and allophycocyanin (APC) in flow cytometry. This is the first demonstration of the use of an APC tandem dye for fluorescence measurements. These resonance energy transfer tandem dyes can be excited by the phycobiliprotein-specific excitation wavelengths and fluoresce at wavelengths above 780 nm. The tandem dyes, when conjugated to antibodies, are suitable for flow cytometry and other immunofluorescence applications. These conjugates are easily detectable above the very low autofluorescence in this part of the spectrum. Indeed, the Cy7-conjugated PE tandem (Cy7PE) has a "brightness" (fluorescence signal over cellular autofluorescence) comparable to that of fluorescein, and the Cy7APC tandem has a "brightness" comparable to that of APC. These tandems are also easily distinguished from other commonly used fluorophores, making them suitable for high-order multiparametric analysis. We show an example of six-color immunofluorescence analysis by flow cytometry, simultaneously measuring fluorescences from fluorescein, PE, Cy5PE, Texas red, APC, and Cy7APC.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was twofold: (1) to examine any gender differences in the performance of a pre-employment selection test using the incremental lifting machine (ILM); and (2) to formulate recommendations regarding analyses of selection fairness in studies of pre-employment screening tests and devices. Data were collected in a series of studies designed to permit analyses of: (1) dynamic measures derived for a 1.8 m maximum ILM strength test; (2) relationships between ILM test scores and performance of a maximal box-lifting task using three different protocols; (3) the impact of anthropom trie measures on performance of both test and task; (4) prediction of actual task performance; and (5) accuracy of the ILM screening test for three different cut-off standards. Results revealed that females differed significantly from males in their performance of a 1.8 m maximum ILM strength test in terms of timing, displacement, velocity, acceleration, force and power. Maximum ILM scores attained by females were poorly correlated with maximum box-lifting scores, but they were significantly related to body weight. Also, regression analyses based on ILM scores and associated dynamic parameters accounted for twice as much variance in box-lifting scores for males than for females. Furthermore, the use of cut-off standards of 22.7 kg and 27.3 kg produced a percentage of false negative results for females (12% and 32% respectively), but not for males. Also, for the cut-off level of 27.3 kg, female selection rates were only 56% of the selection rates for males. Issues for future investigation are recommended.  相似文献
