Tablets, smartphones, and wearables have limited resources. Applications on these devices employ a graphical user interface (GUI) for interaction with users. Language runtimes for GUIs employ dynamic memory management using garbage collection (GC). However, GC policies and algorithms are designed for data centers and cloud computing, but they are not necessarily ideal for resource-constrained embedded devices. In this article, we present GUI GC, a JavaFX GUI benchmark, which we use to compare the performance of the four GC policies of the Eclipse OpenJ9 Java runtime on a resource-constrained environment. Overall, our experiments suggest that the default policy Gencon registered significantly lower execution times than its counterparts. The region-based policy, Balanced, did not fully utilize blocking times; thus, using GUI GC, we conducted experiments with explicit GC invocations that measured significant improvements of up to 13.22% when multiple CPUs were available. Furthermore, we created a second version of GUI GC that expands on the number of controllable load-stressing dimensions; we conducted a large number of randomly configured experiments to quantify the performance effect that each knob has. Finally, we analyzed our dataset to derive suitable knob configurations for desired runtime, GC, and hardware stress levels.  相似文献

Time-resolved absorption difference spectra of membrane suspensions of bovine rhodopsin at pH 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 were collected in the time range from 1 micro s to 200 ms after laser photolysis with 7-ns pulses of 477-nm light. The data were analyzed using singular value decomposition (SVD) and global exponential fitting. At pH 7 the data agree well with previously obtained data (Thorgeirsson et al. (1993) Biochemistry 32, 13861-13872) with fits improved at all pH's by inclusion of a small component due to an absorbance change caused by rotational diffusion which is detectable even at magic angle polarization. A "square scheme" suggested to best explain the previous data, which involves two branches following decay of the lumi intermediate with pathways (1) lumi --> MI480 right harpoon over left harpoon MII and (2) lumi right harpoon over left harpoon MI380 --> MII, could be confirmed throughout the entire pH range. However, to account for the increased rate of the MII --> MI480 reaction in path 1 for rising pH values, we propose that the MII in the square scheme consists of deprotonated MII and protonated MIIH+ forms in rapid equilibrium with each other, resulting in an extended square scheme and increasing the number of 380-nm products from two to three. In addition to the kinetic processes described by the extended square scheme, above pH 8 fast ( approximately 10 micro s) and slow ( approximately 50 ms) components were found. The fast component was assigned to the decay of a blue-shifted lumi intermediate, and the slow component, resolvable only at pH 10, was assigned to formation of a 450 nm absorbing photoproduct.  相似文献

In apparent contrast to earlier work on Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) carriage in the general Caucasian population, in vitro virus isolations from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive male homosexual cohorts have shown frequent examples of multiple EBV infection and an overall prevalence of type 2 EBV strains exceeding 30%. Here we ask to what extent these findings might hold true in another T-cell-immunocompromised cohort, HIV-positive hemophilic patients. Resident EBV strains were rescued within lymphoblastoid cell lines derived from the blood and throat washings of 39 such individuals, using the same in vitro protocols of virus isolation as for the homosexual cohort. A mean of 19 independent cell lines was made per patient, and in each case the resident virus was characterized by PCR-based viral genomic analysis and by immunoblotting to reveal the viral "EBNAprint." By these criteria a significant proportion (14 of 39) of the hemophilic cohort carried more than one EBV strain, suggesting that T-cell impairment does indeed sensitize virus carriers to reinfection with new strains of exogenously transmitted virus. However, the overall incidence of type 2 EBV infection was 10%, which is close to that observed in the earlier work with healthy carriers and substantially lower than that seen in HIV-positive homosexuals. We infer that type 2 EBV is relatively rare in the general Caucasian population but has become endemic in the homosexual community.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Prior research has suggested reductions in the density of serotonin transporter (SERT) binding sites in blood platelets and post-mortem brain tissue of depressed patients. We sought to determine whether patients with unipolar major depression have diminished SERT availability as assessed by both brainstem [123I] beta-CIT SPECT and platelet [3H]paroxetine binding. METHODS: Drug-free depressed and healthy subjects were injected with 211 +/- 22 MBq [123I] beta-CIT and imaged 24 +/- 2 h later under equilibrium conditions. A ratio of specific to nonspecific brain uptake (V3" = (brainstem-occipital)/occipital), a measure proportional to the binding potential (Bmax/Kd), was used for all comparisons. RESULTS: Results showed a statistically significant reduction in brainstem V3" values in depressed as compared to healthy subjects (3.1 +/- .9 vs. 3.8 +/- .8, p = .02). Platelet [3H]paroxetine binding was not altered (Bmax = 2389 +/- 484 vs. 2415 +/- 538 fmol/mg protein, p = .91) and was not significantly correlated with brainstem [123I] beta-CIT binding (r = -0.14, p = .48). CONCLUSIONS: These data are the first to suggest reductions in the density of brain SERT binding sites in living depressed patients. These findings provide further support for a preeminent role for alterations in serotonergic neurons in the pathophysiology of depression.  相似文献

Proton transfer reactivity of isolated charge states of the protein hen egg-white lysozyme shows that multiple distinct conformations of this protein are stable in the gas phase. The reactivities of the 9+ and 10+ charge state ions, formed by electrospray ionization of "native" (disulfide-intact) and "denatured" (disulfide-reduced) solutions, are consistent with values calculated for ions in their crystal structure and fully denatured conformations, respectively. Charge states below 8+ of both forms, formed by proton stripping, have similar or indistinguishable reactivities, indicating that the disulfide-reduced ions fold in the gas phase to a more compact conformation.  相似文献

Genes that encode enzymes that convert inactive "prodrugs" into anticancer metabolites may be therapeutically useful against brain tumors. Unlike other genes tested to date in brain tumor models, the Escherichia coli gpt gene is unique in that it not only sensitizes cells to the prodrug 6-thioxanthine (6TX) but also encodes resistance to a different regimen (mycophenolic acid, xanthine, and hypoxanthine), thus providing a means to select for gpt-positive cells. In the present study, rat C6 glioma cells were infected with a retrovirus vector that transduces this gene. A clonal line (C6GPT-7) was derived that exhibited significant 6TX susceptibility in vitro with an ID50 of 2.5 mumol/L, whereas 50% growth inhibition of parental C6 cells was not achieved at concentrations tested (up to 50 mumol/L). This line also exhibited significant sensitivity to 6-thioguanine (6TG), with an ID50 of 0.05 mumol/L, whereas 50% growth inhibition of parental C6 cells was achieved at 0.5 mumol/L. In a "bystander" assay, C6GPT-7 tumor cells efficiently transferred 6TX sensitivity to C6 cells at ratios as low as 1:9 (C6GPT-7:C6). This in vitro bystander effect was abrogated when C6GPT-7 and C6 cells were separated by a microporous membrane, suggesting that it was not mediated by highly diffusible metabolites. In vivo both 6TX and 6TG significantly inhibited the growth of subcutaneously transplanted C6GPT-7 cells but not that of C6 cells in athymic mice. In an intracerebral model, both 6TX and 6TG exhibited significant antiproliferative effects against tumors formed by C6GPT-7 cells. These findings provide a basis for exploring further gene therapy strategies based on in vivo transfer of the E coli gpt gene to provide chemosensitivity against 6TX and 6TG.  相似文献

Tests comparing image sets can play a critical role in PET research, providing a yes-no answer to the question "Are two image sets different?" The statistical goal is to determine how often observed differences would occur by chance alone. We examined randomization methods to provide several omnibus test for PET images and compared these tests with two currently used methods. In the first series of analyses, normally distributed image data were simulated fulfilling the requirements of standard statistical tests. These analyses generated power estimates and compared the various test statistics under optimal conditions. Varying whether the standard deviations were local or pooled estimates provided an assessment of a distinguishing feature between the SPM and Montreal methods. In a second series of analyses, we more closely simulated current PET acquisition and analysis techniques. Finally, PET images from normal subjects were used as an example of randomization. Randomization proved to be a highly flexible and powerful statistical procedure. Furthermore, the randomization test does not require extensive and unrealistic statistical assumptions made by standard procedures currently in use.  相似文献

This study examined for differences in subjective ratings of discomfort and comfort (Numerical Rating Scale) and objective measures of hamstring (Sit-Reach test), lumbar (Schöber’s test) and neck (Cervical Range of Motion) flexibility in healthy young subjects (n = 24) following 4 h of sitting on stacking chairs with or without limited legroom.When comparing the limited and unlimited legroom groups for differences in subjective and objective measures over 4 h, no significant findings were seen at the 5% level of confidence. However, differences in buttock, neck, shoulder and average discomfort were significantly negatively correlated to differences between post-warm up Sit-Reach scores (Correlation Co-efficients: −.763, −.434, −.408, and −.445; p values of .004, .034, .048, and .029, respectively). The difference in buttock discomfort was significantly negatively correlated to the difference between pre-warm up Sit-Reach scores (Correlation Coefficient: −.750; p = 0.005), post-sitting/pre-warm up and pre-sitting/post-warm up Sit-Reach scores (Correlation Coefficient: −.756; p = 0.004), and Schöber’s tests (Correlation Coefficient: −.578; p = 0.049).Although the above results suggest a relationship between a loss in flexibility and an increase in discomfort, the mechanism influencing this relationship is not clear from this study. What does appear clear is that the limiting of legroom to the parameters used in this study does not seem to exacerbate change in flexibility and discomfort which are a consequence of prolonged sitting.

Relevance to industry

Many forms of public transport provide limited legroom for their passengers, which may have an adverse affect on the user’s flexibility or experience of discomfort. Determining which objectively measurable parameters are associated with the subjective level of discomfort during sitting should allow for a greater appreciation of the changes that underpin such subjective perceptions.  相似文献

Until recently, techniques for AI plan generation relied on highly restrictive assumptions that were almost always violated in real-world environments; consequently, robot designers adopted reactive architectures and avoided AI planning techniques. Some recent research efforts have focused on obviating such assumptions by developing techniques that enable the generation and execution of plans in dynamic, uncertain environments. In this paper, we discuss one such technique, rationale-based monitoring, originally introduced by Veloso, Pollack, and Cox (Proceedings for the Fourth International Conference on AI Planning Systems, Pittsburgh, PA, 1998, pp. 171–179) and we describe our use of it in a simple mobile robot environment. We review the original approach, describe how it can be adapted for a causal-link planner, and provide experimental results demonstrating that it can lead to improved plans without consuming excessive overhead. We also describe our use of rationale-based monitoring in a mobile robot office-assistant project currently in progress.  相似文献

The MR studies of three histologically proven spinal neurilemmomas and neurofibromas were reviewed retrospectively. There were two benign neurilemmomas (schwannomas) and one neurofibroma. The common characteristic of these cases was a central low intensity focus ("dot") seen on postcontrast T1-weighted imaging. The low intensity foci corresponded histologically to a congeries of changes including edema, microcysts, foam cells, hyalinization of blood vessels, old hemorrhage, and dystrophic calcification.  相似文献
