A formal model of asynchronous communication and its use in mechanically verifying a biphase mark protocol

We present a formal model of asynchronous communication between two digital hardware devices. The model takes the form of a function in the Boyer-Moore logic. The function transforms the signal stream generated by one processor into that consumed by an independently clocked processor, given the phases and rates of the two clocks and the communications delay. The model can be used quantitatively to derive concrete performance bounds on communications at ISO protocol level 1 (physical level). We use the model to show that an 18-bit/cell biphase mark protocol reliably sends messages of arbitrary length between two processors provided the ratio of the clock rates is within 5% of unity.     

Transendothelial insulin transport is not saturable in vivo. No evidence for a receptor-mediated process

The redistribution of spin-labeled phospholipid analogs across the plasma membrane of HepG2 cells, either in suspension or grown as monolayers, was investigated. After incorporation into the outer membrane leaflet spin-labeled aminophospholipids phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) moved rapidly to the inner monolayer, whereas the analog of phosphatidylcholine (PC) disappeared more slowly from the outer leaflet. The fast, inward movement of the aminophospholipids was abolished after adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-depletion of cells, suggesting the presence of an aminophospholipid translocase in the plasma membrane of these cells. Compared with human red blood cells, the activity of the aminophospholipid translocase is two orders of magnitude higher in HepG2 cells. From these data, a transverse phospholipid asymmetry can be inferred with the aminophospholipids mainly concentrated on the inner monolayer and the choline-containing phospholipids on the outer leaflet. The relevance of the enrichment of PC in the outer membrane leaflet for the formation and composition of the bile is discussed.     

A general interaction analysis for large deformations

A method is presented for the finite element analysis of the interaction of geometrically and materially non-linear bodies. Interaction is considered at predefined interfaces. Equations for interaction forces are assembled via static condensation, and the solution for these forces is utilized for the full analysis of the problem. An interface function using the interpolating functions is defined to maintain the equilibrium of interaction forces and the displacement compatibility at the interface nodes. The method permits large rotations and slipping as well as the occurrence of new contacts at the interfaces. Additionally, solutions can be found using high- or low-order elements and when nodes at either side of the interface are not aligned.     

A protective role for testosterone in adjuvant-induced arthritis

We have investigated the role of the gonadal steroids testosterone (T) and progesterone in modulating: (1) the onset and severity of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA), (2) the response of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and (3) the levels of plasma prolactin and anterior pituitary prolactin messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) in the rat. Male rats were castrated (CSX) and received either no T, low T or high T delivered using silastic implants. In a second study experimental groups comprised CSX/AA, CSX/AA + progesterone or CSX/AA + progesterone + T. The time of onset was sooner and the severity of AA was greater in CSX rats. Inflammation was prevented by T replacement. Endogenous plasma T levels were decreased in AA rats. In control animals with AA there was an increase in pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) mRNA in the anterior pituitary and of plasma corticosterone, and a decrease in corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) mRNA. These changes in the HPA axis of AA and CSX/AA rats were reversed by T replacement. These data suggest that T has an important protective effect on the progress and severity of AA. This was reflected by a reversal of the neuroendocrine changes of the HPA axis. Progesterone treatment alone had no effect on the severity of the disease. Prolactin mRNA in the anterior pituitary was decreased in the CSX and in the CSX/AA group but was not altered by AA. Plasma prolactin was raised in AA but T replacement did not reduce these elevated levels despite the absence of disease. Thus, prolactin provides a poor indicator of inflammation, suggesting that it may not be a potent pro-inflammatory compound in AA.     

Arousal, numbing, and intrusion: symptom structure of PTSD following assault

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated hypotheses concerning the importance of symptoms of numbing in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: Symptoms of PTSD were assessed in 72 female rape victims and 86 female victims of nonsexual assault approximately 3 months after the crimes occurred. A principal-components factor analysis of subjects' symptoms was then undertaken. RESULTS: The analysis yielded three factors: arousal/avoidance, numbing, and intrusion. These were somewhat different from the symptom clusters in DSM-III-R, since effortful avoidance and numbing symptoms did not load on the same factor. Numbing symptoms appeared to be particularly important in identifying individuals with PTSD. CONCLUSIONS: The results imply that there are two patterns of posttrauma symptoms, one characterizing PTSD and the second characterizing a phobic reaction.     

Oxidation of low density lipoprotein by iron or copper at acidic pH

Oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL) may play a significant role in atherosclerosis. We have investigated the effect of pH on the oxidation of LDL by iron or copper. When LDL was oxidized by iron in the presence of cysteine in either Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS) or Ham's F-10 medium, an acidic pH greatly decreased the lag period and increased the rate of formation of hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), and increased its uptake by macrophages. There was a dose-dependent increase of LDL oxidation at acidic pH in the presence of increasing concentrations of cysteine. When LDL was oxidized by copper in HBSS, an acidic pH increased the lag phase before the rapid formation of conjugated dienes, hydroperoxides, and TBARS, but increased its uptake by macrophages. Similar results were obtained using Ham's F-10 medium. Cysteine (100 microM) inhibited the modification of LDL by copper in HBSS at both pH 7.4 and 5.5 As atherosclerotic lesions may be acidic, these observations may help to explain why LDL oxidation occurs locally at these sites.     

A new tool to measure pressure under burn garments

This article introduces a new tool to measure the pressure that is under pressure garments. The Iscan (Tekscan, Inc.) system uses a patented ultra-thin (0.007 inch) sensor with multiple sensing locations that sample continuously at 100 times per second. It is noninvasive, convenient, and quick. The study had two parts. First, we established the validity and reliability of the device. Next, garment/scar interface pressures were measured on new garments with use of the Iscan system. Four garment types were studied, with 10 measurements made in each group: Isotoner gloves (Smith & Nephew Roylan, Inc.); custom-fit pressure gloves; Tubigrip forearm sleeves (Seton Health Care Group); and custom-fit pressure forearm sleeves. Mean garment/scar interface pressures were 18 +/- 2 mm Hg for the Isotoner glove, 34 +/- 5 mm Hg for the custom-fit pressure glove, 20 +/- 7 mm Hg for the Tubigrip sleeve, and 35 +/- 6 mm Hg for the custom-fit sleeve. We concluded that the Iscan system can be used to measure pressure under pressure garments accurately and reliably, and that custom-fit hand and forearm garments provide more pressure than Isotoner gloves or Tubigrip sleeves.     

Economics of liquid hydrogen from water electrolysis

Using the data from vendors and open literature, we have constructed a preliminary cost model to predict the cost of liquid hydrogen (LH₂) from water electrolysis. The model has been applied to two LH₂ plants. Both have a production rate of 10 886 kg day⁻¹. The first plant (Plant 1) consists of a tank-type electrolyzer and a liquefier and runs all day at the base-load (or equivalent base-load) power rate. The second (Plant 2) consists of a tank-type electrolyzer, a liquefier, a compressor, and storage vessels. The electrolyzer and the compressor shall run only during the off-peak hours at the off-peak power rate. However, the liquefier shall run all day at the base-load (or equivalent base-load) power rate. The costs of LH₂ from both plants are presented. Unless the base-load power rate is high and the off-peak power rate is substantially low, Plant 1 appears to be economically more feasible than Plant 2.
