Acute hemodynamic effects of estrogen administration in postmenopausal women

The hemodynamic effects of estrogens in replacement doses have not been fully clarified; therefore, we studied the acute hemodynamic changes after 0.625 and 1.25 mg of conjugated estrogens, administered intravenously, using a thermodilution catheter, in postmenopausal women without structural heart disease. Pulmonary and systemic pressures and resistances and stroke volume did not change compared with baseline, but heart rate and cardiac output decreased significantly, which may be associated with estrogen's previously described calcium-blocking effect or with a more recently contemplated beta-blocking action.

Ganglioside GT1b inhibits keratinocyte adhesion and migration on a fibronectin matrix

Highly sialylated gangliosides have been shown to alter cellular adhesion to a fibronectin matrix. The effect of these gangliosides on the adhesion, spreading, and migration of cultured keratinocytes on a fibronectin matrix has not been explored. Ganglioside GT1b significantly prevented attachment of keratinocytes to fibronectin and also detached previously adherent keratinocytes in a concentration-dependent manner without cell toxicity. GT1b did not affect adhesion of keratinocytes to wells coated with laminin, type I or type IV collagen, 804G extracellular matrix, or albumin. GT1b also inhibited keratinocyte migration on fibronectin in a concentration-dependent manner at concentrations as low as 5 nM GT1b, but had no effect on migration of keratinocytes plated on other matrices. GT1b binds to intact fibronectin and to the 120-kD RGDS-containing cell-binding fibronectin fragment, but not to the heparin- or gelatin-binding fragments of fibronectin. Although RGDS competes with GT1b in inhibiting adhesion, GT1b does not diminish binding of keratinocytes to a derivatized RGDS substratum, suggesting that the GT1b effect involves a non-RGDS site in the cell-binding region that modulates RGDS/alpha 5 beta 1 integrin receptor interaction. Through a specific effect on keratinocyte interaction with fibronectin, GT1b may participate in the regulation of cell adhesion and migration on a fibronectin substratum, which are important events during wound healing and the spreading of cutaneous neoplasia.     

Overexpression of Glut1 and Glut3 in stage I nonsmall cell lung carcinoma is associated with poor survival

We report the electrophysiologic findings of myoclonus in a patient with Huntington's disease (HD). This patient was studied postoperatively after a bilateral fetal cell transplant in his striatum. Incomplete transient improvement was seen in the myoclonus, followed by gradual deterioration. The myoclonus itself had a cortical correlate and was associated with an enlarged somatosensory evoked potential (SEP), consistent with the presence of cortical reflex myoclonus. An enlarged SEP has not been previously reported in myoclonus associated with HD. The postulated mechanisms for myoclonus, when it occurs in HD, have differed in the literature. The reason for the transient improvement of the myoclonus following transplantation is unclear, but this case raises the possibility that basal ganglia circuits may modulate cortical myoclonic activity.     

Experimental study of the thermoforming of a blend of styrene-butadiene copolymer with polystyrene

Material characterization and thermoforming studies were completed using a blend of a styrene-butadiene copolymer with polystyrene used commercially for the production of cups and dishes. This composition was thermoformed between 135 and 152°C. Studies consisted of forming 30-mil and 46-mil sheets at 130, 140, and 150°C at three evacuation rates in an aluminum cylindrical mold. The mold was instrumented with a pressure transducer to follow the change in pressure during forming and two Linear Voltage Displacement Transducers, which served as mold wall contact sensors. The results indicated that the process is extremely rapid (0.25–0.60 sec) for the high and medium evacuation rates. The process was found to require a low pressure differential for forming (typically <4 psi). The final part thickness distribution and extension ratio data indicated that the material stretches into the approximate shape of a spherical segment, contacts the bottom/ center of the mold, contacts the sides, and finally stretches into the corners. The tensile strength and modulus of elasticity measurements of the final part were slightly less than the original sheet properties for samples measured in the machine direction but slightly greater for samples taken in the transverse direction. However, the percent elongation at break increased significantly in both the machine and transverse directions.
