Wind turbine spacing is an important design parameter for wind farms. Placing turbines too close together reduces their power extraction because of wake effects and increases maintenance costs because of unsteady loading. Conversely, placing them further apart increases land and cabling costs, as well as electrical resistance losses. The asymptotic limit of very large wind farms in which the flow conditions can be considered ‘fully developed’ provides a useful framework for studying general trends in optimal layouts as a function of dimensionless cost parameters. Earlier analytical work by Meyers and Meneveau (Wind Energy 15, 305–317 (2012)) revealed that in the limit of very large wind farms, the optimal turbine spacing accounting for the turbine and land costs is significantly larger than the value found in typical existing wind farms. Here, we generalize the analysis to include effects of cable and maintenance costs upon optimal wind turbine spacing in very large wind farms under various economic criteria. For marginally profitable wind farms, minimum cost and maximum profit turbine spacings coincide. Assuming linear‐based and area‐based costs that are representative of either offshore or onshore sites we obtain for very large wind farms spacings that tend to be appreciably greater than occurring in actual farms confirming earlier results but now including cabling costs. However, we show later that if wind farms are highly profitable then optimization of the profit per unit area leads to tighter optimal spacings than would be implied by cost minimization. Destructive distillation of solar heat transfer fluids was conducted to determine the types of pyrolytic products which might be formed in solar collectors under conditions of stagnation or malfunction. The distillates were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to determine the types of compounds which were present and the minor components which might be formed. Dehydration products were formed from ethylene and propylene glycols with ethylene oxide and propylene oxide being minor products. A high aromatic petroleum heat transfer fluid yielded distillation fractions enriched in quinolines or isoquinolines and methylated derivatives thereof. Fractionation of this aromatic heat transfer fluid showed that the basic fraction of unheated fluid also contained aza-arenes which exhibited mutagenic activity in the Ames' bioassay. GC/MS showed that the basic fraction from unheated heat transfer fluid also contained benzoquinolines which appeared to be lacking in heat degraded samples of the same fluid. Fractionation of heat transfer fluids, in particular petroleum-based fluids, may often be necessary in order to concentrate minor components so that they can be identified by GC/MS and in order to detect mutagenic activities without interference from cytotoxic components.  相似文献

Recent advances in low-cost microprocessors and sensors have allowed for the development of low-cost spectrometers for public experimentation and education outreach. In the context of the present paper and other recent research, low-cost spectrometers are important remote sensing instruments for numerous applications in citizen science and education. We built five spectrometer designs then tested them for absorption using concentrations of fluids and reflectance using colour swatches and minerals found on Mars as well as other materials possessing a high near infra-red (NIR) reflectance. These results were then compared with a laboratory grade spectrometer. We found that while all spectrometers produced meaningful results during the fluid concentration tests, there were considerable differences in accuracies between home-made instruments during the reflectance testing. Two spectrometer designs were identified that produced useful results for a range of low-cost scientific applications.  相似文献

A 14-year-old girl with congenital heart disease underwent ventricular assist device placement before cardiac transplantation. The inability to close her abdominal fascia necessitated the placement of Prolene mesh, which subsequently became exposed and contaminated when her incision dehisced. Stable closure was obtained with Vicryl mesh and a rectus abdominis turnover flap. Her posttransplant course was notable for compression of the donor heart, necessitating prolonged open sternotomy. She failed an attempt at delayed sternal closure due to compression of the right ventricle by the sternum. In addition to standard pectoralis advancement flaps, a pedicled osseous sternal flap based on her left internal mammary artery was developed to avoid ventricular compression yet still provide some protection to the mediastinum. Alternative uses of this vascularized bone flap to assist with chest wall reconstruction are discussed.  相似文献

CONTEXT: Acidic foods such as orange juice have been thought to be unlikely vehicles of foodborne illness. OBJECTIVE: To investigate an outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Hartford (Salmonella Hartford) infections among persons visiting a theme park in Orlando, Fla, in 1995. DESIGN: Review of surveillance data, matched case-control study, laboratory investigation, and environmental studies. SETTING: General community. PARTICIPANTS: The surveillance case definition was Salmonella Hartford or Salmonella serogroup C1 infection in a resident of or a visitor to Orlando in May or June 1995. In the case-control study, case patients were limited to theme park hotel visitors and controls were matched to case patients by age group and hotel check-in date. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Risk factors for infection and source of implicated food. RESULTS: Sixty-two case patients from 21 states were identified. Both Salmonella Hartford and Salmonella enterica serotype Gaminara (Salmonella Gaminara) were isolated from stool samples of 1 ill person. Thirty-two case patients and 83 controls were enrolled in the case-control study. Ninety-seven percent of case patients had drunk orange juice in the theme park vs 54% of controls (matched odds ratio, undefined; 95% confidence interval, 5.2 to undefined). The orange juice was unpasteurized and locally produced. Salmonella Gaminara was isolated from 10 of 12 containers of orange juice produced during May and July, indicating ongoing contamination of juice probably because of inadequately sanitized processing equipment. CONCLUSIONS: Unpasteurized orange juice caused an outbreak of salmonellosis in a large Florida theme park. All orange juice was recalled and the processing plant closed. Pasteurization or other equally effective risk-management strategies should be used in the production of all juices.  相似文献

The study of human transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) in complex with the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor extracellular domain has been undertaken in order to generate information on the interactions of these molecules. Analysis of 1H NMR transferred nuclear Overhauser enhancement data for titration of the ligand with the receptor has yielded specific data on the residues of the growth factor involved in contact with the larger protein. Significant increases and decreases in nuclear Overhauser enhancement cross-peak intensity occur upon complexation, and interpretation of these changes indicates that residues of the A- and C-loops of TGF-alpha form the major binding interface, while the B-loop provides a structural scaffold for this site. These results corroborate the conclusions from NMR relaxation studies (Hoyt, D. W., Harkins, R. N., Debanne, M. T., O'Connor-McCourt, M., and Sykes, B. D. (1994) Biochemistry 33, 15283-15292), which suggest that the C-terminal residues of the polypeptide are immobilized upon receptor binding, while the N terminus of the molecule retains considerable flexibility, and are consistent with structure-function studies of the TGF-alpha/EGF system indicating a multidomain binding model. These results give a visualization, for the first time, of native TGF-alpha in complex with the EGF receptor and generate a picture of the ligand-binding site based upon the intact molecule. This will undoubtedly be of utility in the structure-based design of TGF-alpha/EGF agonists and/or antagonists.  相似文献

Recent work in many laboratories has revealed that cytokines are important mediators of inflammation, host defense, and tissue injury in a variety of neurological diseases. A role for astrocytes and microglia in these diseases has been considered pivotal, since both cell types readily produce and respond to cytokines in vitro and show morphologic and immunocytochemical evidence for activation in vivo. Although much of the work documenting these events has been generated in rodent systems, our laboratory has focused on human cell culture systems to define the nature of the activating signals for human microglia and astrocytes and their responses to activating cytokines and growth factors and evidence for activation. The results have shown that interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a potent activator of human astrocytes and induces cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6, and is a potent activator of nitric oxide generation in astrocytes. Astrocytes also promote microglial growth and differentiation through production of colony-stimulating factors, an activity that is enhanced following activation with IL-1. This review will summarize the human glia data generated in this and other laboratories and present hypotheses how glia may participate in certain human central nervous system diseases.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of continuing medical education (CME) with and without a quality assurance component (CME+QA) on physician practices in the prevention of venous thromboembolism. METHODS: A communitywide study was performed in 15 short-stay hospitals in central Massachusetts. The study population included 3158 patients in acute-care hospitals with multiple risk factors for venous thromboembolism. Study hospitals were randomly assigned to one of two educational strategies or to a control group that received no intervention. RESULTS: The proportion of patients at high risk for venous thromboembolism who received effective methods of prophylaxis increased significantly from 29% in 1986 to 52% in 1989 (P < .001). This increase was seen in all study groups: control hospitals, 40% to 51% (P < .001); CME hospitals, 21% to 49% (P < .0001); and CME+QA hospitals, 27% to 55% (P < .0001). The increase in prophylaxis use from 1986 to 1989 was significantly greater among patients cared for in hospitals whose physicians participated in a formal CME program (an increase of 28%) than in control hospitals (an increase of 11%) (P < .001). There was no significant difference in the use of prophylaxis in hospitals whose physicians received CME+QA interventions compared with hospitals whose physicians received CME interventions alone (identical increases of 28%). CONCLUSION: A formal CME program significantly increased the frequency with which physicians prescribed prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism. We believe the key factor in our CME interventions that motivated clinicians to change their practices was the provision of hospital-specific data demonstrating a compelling need for improvement. Despite the substantial investment by hospitals in QA, traditional QA intervention appeared to provide no additional benefit. Even after extensive CME/QA interventions, prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism remained underutilized, suggesting the need to develop new approaches to changing clinical practice.  相似文献

Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is a causative factor of humoral hypercalcemia in breast cancer and other malignancies. We studied circulating PTHrP levels with three different immunoassays directed against different parts of the PTHrP molecule in 48 patients with breast cancer and eucalcemia. The methods used were: (a) a RIA with antibodies directed toward the midregion (63-78); (b) an immunofluorometric assay with two antibodies against 1-34 and 38-67; and (c) an immunoradiometric assay with antibodies against 1-40 and 1-72. Although most patients had PTHrP levels indistinguishable from normal when measured by all three methods, four patients had increased serum levels in the IFMA. PTHrP was detected by immunohistochemistry in tumors from nearly all patients. One patient with elevated PTHrP in plasma measured by IFMA showed intense staining of tumor by immunohistochemistry; the tumor was histologically graded as III (severe) and was the largest of all tumors in this patient group. The IFMA can identify increased serum PTHrP in some patients with breast cancer who are not hypercalcemic. This assay may be especially useful in screening patients for this tumor during a relative early phase of the disease.  相似文献

The well-characterized Alberta Sweet Mixed Blend oil and several other oils which are commonly transported in Canada were physically weathered and then incubated with a defined microbial inoculum. The purpose was to produce quantitative data on oil components and component groups which are more susceptible or resistant to biodegradation, and to determine how oils rank in relation to each other in terms of biodegradation potential. The biodegraded oils were characterized by quantitative determination of changes in important hydrocarbon groups including the total petroleum hydrocarbons, total saturates and aromatics, and also by quantitation of more than 100 individual target aliphatic, aromatic and biomarker components. The study reveals a pattern of distinct oil composition changes due to biodegradation, which is significantly different from the pattern due to physical or short-term weathering. It is important to be able to distinguish between these two forms of loss, so that loss due to weathering is not interpreted as loss due to biodegradation in the laboratory or in the field. Based on these findings, the oil composition changes due to biodegradation can be readily differentiated from those due to physical weathering. To rank the tested oils with respect to biodegradability, losses in total petroleum hydrocarbons and aromatics were used to calculate biodegradation potential indices, employing equations proposed by Environment Canada and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The different methods produced very similar biodegradation trends, confirming that patterns of oil biodegradability do exist.  相似文献
