In this article I examine an album of spirit photographs published in Barcelona circa 1903. The album comprises two photograph collections, one of photos taken in a studio in Manila, the Philippines, another belonging to Dr. Theodore Hansmann, a German immigrant to the USA who was one of the country’s most ardent advocates and researchers of spirit photography. Apart from their overt share in a genre, it is unclear what connects these two collections and who exactly brought them together. I draw from this ambiguity in order to explore the tension between spiritism as a philosophy and practice that traveled via historically specific colonial routes and were localized to particular political and cultural contexts, and spiritism as a global occult movement founded precisely on the promise of transcending metaphysical and spatial boundaries.  相似文献

Physical adsorption was used to produce nanometer thick thermoresponsive films with a view to nonenzymatic cell detachment. Two polymers were investigated, poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) and poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N-tertbutylacrylamide). Substrates were prepared above and below the polymers’ LCST to investigate the effect of polymer conformation on the prepared substrates. Endothelial cells were seeded on the prepared films; cell proliferation was higher on the films produced below the polymers’ LCST than on those prepared above and cells detached from the surfaces upon temperature reduction. Physical adsorption of poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide)–based films is a viable approach to produce substrates compliant with cell growth and temperature modulated detachment.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to explore whether work characteristics (job demands, job control, social support) comprising Karasek and Theorell's (1990) Job Demands–Control–Support framework predict employee safety performance (safety compliance and safety participation; Neal and Griffin, 2006). We used cross-sectional data of self-reported work characteristics and employee safety performance from 280 healthcare staff (doctors, nurses, and administrative staff) from Emergency Departments of seven hospitals in the United Kingdom. We analyzed these data using a structural equation model that simultaneously regressed safety compliance and safety participation on the main effects of each of the aforementioned work characteristics, their two-way interactions, and the three-way interaction among them, while controlling for demographic, occupational, and organizational characteristics. Social support was positively related to safety compliance, and both job control and the two-way interaction between job control and social support were positively related to safety participation. How work design is related to employee safety performance remains an important area for research and provides insight into how organizations can improve workplace safety. The current findings emphasize the importance of the co-worker in promoting both safety compliance and safety participation.  相似文献

In this study three strains of lactic acid bacteria were applied during the malting process to evaluate the impact on malt and wort quality. The trials were performed in a micromalting plant simulating an industrial malting programme. The samples were compared to chemically acidified as well as non‐acidified malt. Bacterial cultures were chosen with reference to their enzymatic (proteolytic/amylolytic) activity, or their good acidifying properties. The effects of lactic acid bacteria on wort characteristics were investigated and compared to wort produced from 100% unacidified malt. A chemical food grade lactic acid was also used to acidify the barley for comparison purposes. Characteristics such as pH, extract, colour, viscosity, total soluble nitrogen, free amino nitrogen, apparent fermentability, β‐glucan and lautering performance of the resultant worts were determined. Results showed improved levels of β‐glucanase in the malt although reduced malt friability was observed where LAB was employed. An improved lautering performance, lower wort viscosity and elevated TSN levels were also reported where LAB exhibiting protease activity were applied.  相似文献

The authors examined the accuracy of information elicited from seventy-nine 5- to 7-year-old children about a staged event that included physical contact-touching. Four to six weeks later, children's recall for the event was assessed using an interview protocol analogous to those used in forensic investigations with children. Following the verbal interview, children were asked about touch when provided with human figure drawings (drawings only), following practice using the human figure drawings (drawings with instruction), or without drawings (verbal questions only). In this touch-inquiry phase of the interview, most children provided new information. Children in the drawings conditions reported more incorrect information than those in the verbal questions condition. Forensically relevant errors were infrequent and were rarely elaborated on. Although asking children to talk about innocuous touch may lead them to report unreliable information, especially when human figure drawings are used as aids, errors are reduced when open-ended prompts are used to elicit further information about reported touches. A novel method, based upon fluorescence quenching measurements, is described for the study of the mechanistic details of solvent penetration into thin polymer films. Here poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) labelled with phenanthrene (Phe) groups was coated as a film (0.8 μm thick) onto quartz disks. Diffusion of solvent (1 : 1 2-butanone/2-propanol) into the film was followed by a decrease in Phe fluorescence, while film dissolution was monitored simultaneously by laser interferometry. In the case of PMMA (Mw = 411,000, films annealed at 160°C) both processes occur at approximately the same rate and exhibit non-Fickian (relaxation-controlled) diffusion behavior. Correlating the results of these two experiments shows that, once the steady state is reached, the dissolution rate is controlled by the advance of the solvent front into the PMMA film. The “transition layer,” an important dissolution parameter, increases its thickness from 50 to 90 nm during the plasticization stage of solvent penetration and maintains its thickness until the solvent front reaches the quartz substrate.  相似文献

The effects of blending camelina oil with a number of fish oils on oxidative stability and fishy odour were evaluated. Camelina oil was found to be more stable than tuna oil, ‘omega‐3’ fish oil and salmon oil as indicated by predominantly lower ρ‐anisidine (AV), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and conjugated triene levels (CT) during storage at 60 °C for 20 days (p < 0.05). Peroxide values (PV) were similar for all oils until Day 13 when values for camelina oil were higher. Values for blends of the fish oils (50, 25, 15, 5%) with camelina oil were generally between those of their respective bulk oils indicating a dilution effect. Camelina oil had a similar odour score (p < 0.05) to sunflower oil (9.2 and 9.6, respectively) indicating, as expected, an absence of fishy odours. In comparison, the fish oils had lower scores of 6.1 to 6.6 (p < 0.05) indicating mild to moderate fishy odours. Odour scores were improved at the 25% fish oil levels (p < 0.05) and were not different to camelina oil at the 15 or 5% levels (p < 0.05). Practical applications: Camelina oil is a potentially important functional food ingredient providing beneficial n‐3 PUFA. Oil extracted from Camelina sativa seeds contains greater than 50% polyunsaturated fatty acids of which 35‐40% is α‐linolenic acid (C18:3ω3, ALA), an essential omega‐3 fatty acid 1 . While EPA and DHA from fish oils are more potent nutritionally, they are less stable than ALA. This work evaluated innovative blends of fish oil with camelina oil for stability and acceptability. The results demonstrate that there is potential for use of blends of camelina oil with fish oils in food products, as the results show some benefits in terms of reduction of fishy odours. Such information could be valuable in relation to formulation of food products containing high levels of n‐3 PUFA from both plant and fish sources.  相似文献

Recreational beach water samples collected on weekends and weekdays during 11 consecutive summer weeks were tested for potentially viable Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts and Giardia lamblia cysts using the multiplexed fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method. The levels of oocysts and cysts on weekends were significantly higher than on the weekdays (P<0.01). Concentrations of oocysts in weekend samples (n=27) ranged from 2 to 42 oocysts/L (mean: 13.7 oocysts/L), and cyst concentration ranged from 0 to 33 cysts/L (mean: 9.1 cysts/L). For the samples collected on weekdays (n=33), the highest oocyst concentration was 7 oocysts/L (mean: 1.5 oocysts/L), and the highest cyst concentration was 4 cysts/L (mean: 0.6 cysts/L). The values of water turbidity were significantly higher on weekends than on weekdays, and were correlated with the number of bathers and concentration of C. parvum oocysts and G. lamblia cysts (P<0.04). The study demonstrated positive relationships between number of bathers and levels of waterborne C. parvum oocysts and G. lamblia cysts in recreational beach water. It is essential to test recreational waters for Cryptosporidium and Giardia when numbers of bathers are greatest, or limit the number of bathers in a recreational beach area.  相似文献
