BACKGROUND: Amaranth is a little‐known culture in Brazilian agriculture. Amaranthus cruentus BRS Alegria was the first cultivar recommended by Embrapa for the soil of the Brazilian scrubland. In order to evaluate the potential of this species in the production of flour, starch and protein concentrates, the latter products were obtained from A. cruentus BRS Alegria seeds, characterized and compared with the products obtained from the A. caudatus species cultivated in its soil of origin. RESULTS: The seeds of A. cruentus BRS Alegria furnished high‐purity starch and flour with significant content of starch, proteins, and lipids. The starch and flour of this species presented higher gelatinization temperatures and formed stronger gels upon cooling compared with those obtained from the A. caudatus species. This is due to their greater amylose content and a difference in the composition of the more important fatty acids, such as stearic, oleic and linoleic acids, which indicates that they have greater heat stability. Sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and differential scanning calorimetry revealed the presence of albumins, globulins, glutelins and prolamins in the protein concentrate, which was obtained as a byproduct of starch production. CONCLUSION: Amaranthus cruentus BRS Alegria has potential application in the production of flour, starch and protein concentrates, with interesting characteristics for use as food ingredients. In this paper we study base station sleep modes that, by reducing power consumption in periods of low traffic, improve the energy efficiency of cellular access networks. We assume that when some base stations enter sleep mode, radio coverage and service provisioning are provided by the base stations that remain active, so as to guarantee that service is available over the whole area at all times. This may be an optimistic assumption in the case of the sparse base station layouts typical of rural areas, but is, on the contrary, a realistic hypothesis for the dense layouts of urban areas, which consume most of the network energy. 相似文献

Mexican American adolescents have higher rates of externalizing problems than their peers from other ethnic and racial groups. To begin the process of understanding factors related to externalizing problems in this population, this study used the social development model (SDM) and prospective data across the transition to junior high school from 750 diverse Mexican American families. In addition, the authors examined whether familism values provided a protective effect for relations within the model. Results showed that the SDM worked well for this sample. As expected, association with deviant peers was the primary predictor of externalizing behaviors. There was support for a protective effect in that adolescents with higher familism values had slower rates of increase in association with deviant peers from 5th to 7th grades than those with lower familism values. Future research needs to determine whether additional culturally appropriate modifications of the SDM would increase its usefulness for Mexican American adolescents. Limiting factors induced by the formation of a biofilm on the hydrocarbon's surface during in‐situ bioremediation were identified. A liquid–liquid system (hydrocarbon–aqueous solution) and a device made of six fixed‐bed columns packed with sand were successively used on a laboratory‐scale. In the liquid–liquid system, it was shown that biofilm growth was limited by the diffusion of both oxygen and hydrocarbon within the biofilm. At the end of growth, the biofilm thickness reached 80 ± 20µm. In the fixed‐bed columns, additional difficulties were observed. First, distribution of oxygen in the deepest part of the sand was difficult: from 84 to 100% of the biofilm growth occurred in the upper two‐thirds of the sand. Then, the surface of the hydrocarbon available for microorganisms was found to be a limiting factor for the biofilm's development. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

We present a system subject to shocks that arrive following a Markovian arrival process. The system is minimally repaired. It is replaced when a certain number of shocks arrive. A general model where the replacements are governed by a discrete phase-type distribution is studied. For this system, the Markov process governing the system is constructed, and the interarrival times between replacements and the number of replacements are calculated. A special case of this system is when it can stand a prefixed number of shocks. For this new system, the same performance measures are calculated. This work studies the changes along days of the aroma released from a flavour encapsulated in a polysaccharide gel matrix using the electronic nose methodology. The purpose is to explore the capacity of the sensor array to assign a pattern of aroma to the corresponding release day within a total period of five days. Different procedures of data treatment and analysis are compared in order to achieve the maximum of information of the system under study in conditions where the number of measurements is limited. Raw and normalized sensor signals are processed using various unsupervised and supervised data analysis algorithms such as Principal Component Analysis, Kohonen-Self Organizing Maps, Cluster Analysis, Multiple Discriminant Analysis and two types of Artificial Neural Networks (BP-ANN and RBF-ANN). Accurate assignation of the number of release days is obtained with a successful classification up to four classes associated to samples at increasing days of aroma release. Garden compost has already been identified as a source of efficient electro-active (EA) biofilms. The work described here consisted of lixiviating the compost and then using the leachate as a microbial source. This procedure gave promising results for the treatment of yogurt waste (YW) in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Experiments performed in MFC set-ups were compared with electrochemical cells under polarization at +0.1 V versus SCE. Different parameters were tested to optimize the microbial anode. Preliminary acclimation of the compost microbial flora to YW was revealed to be unnecessary. Forming biofilms firstly in pure leachate before exposing them to YW showed that high concentrations of this type of substrate were detrimental to current generation. Pre-treatment of the electrode by pre-adsorbing YW led to a 10-fold increase in the current density. The highest current densities were obtained at 40 and 60 °C, revealing the diversity of electro-active microorganisms coming from soils. Values up to 1,450 mA m?2 were reached at 40 °C. 相似文献

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is an important secondary air pollutant formed as a result of photochemical reactions between primary pollutants, such as
nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). O3 concentrations in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) are predicted to continue increasing as a result of anthropogenic activity,
which will impact strongly on wild and cultivated plants. O3 affects photosynthesis and induces the development of visible foliar injuries, which are the result of genetically controlled
programmed cell death. It also activates many plant defense responses, including the emission of phytogenic VOCs. Plant emitted
VOCs play a role in many eco-physiological functions. Besides protecting the plant from abiotic stresses (high temperatures
and oxidative stress) and biotic stressors (competing plants, micro- and macroorganisms), they drive multitrophic interactions
between plants, herbivores and their natural enemies e.g., predators and parasitoids as well as interactions between plants
(plant-to-plant communication). In addition, VOCs have an important role in atmospheric chemistry. They are O3 precursors, but at the same time are readily oxidized by O3, thus resulting in a series of new compounds that include secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Here, we review the effects
of O3 on plants and their VOC emissions. We also review the state of current knowledge on the effects of ozone on ecological interactions
