Conformability to tissues and adequate mechanical strength are clinically useful properties of resorbable biomaterials used in soft tissue repair. Microbially derived cellulose is attractive as a high strength, highly conformable, and biocompatible material for tissue repair, but is not naturally resorbable. Here we show that controlled oxidation of microbial cellulose sheets that have been pre‐irradiated with γ‐radiation results in a resorbable and fully conformable membrane that can be rapidly rehydrated in aqueous fluids. In vitro studies showed that degradation of the resorbable membranes occurs in two major phases: (1) initial rapid degradation of about 70–80% of the entire sample followed by (2) slower degradation of an additional 5–10% which eventually levels off leaving a small amount of nonresorbable material. In vivo, prototype materials showed marked degradation at all time points, with the most rapid degradation occurring in the first 2–4 weeks. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this study we explored the densification, microstructure evolution, and high-temperature properties of bulk lanthanum hexaboride. LaB6 bulks were consolidated using spark-plasma sintering only in the temperature range between 1400°C and 1700°C. We adopted flash spark plasma sintering (SPS) of LaB6 using a direct current heating without a graphite die. We observed a peculiar grain-size gradient when coarse grains exceeding 300 μm were observed on the top side of the specimen, while the bottom side had a grain size of 15–20 μm. Such large grain was not observed using SPS at 2000°C, suggesting that these might originate from a local overheating. Based on the three-point flexural tests, it was observed that the toughness and strength of the LaB6 were acceptable at room-temperature (3.1 ± 0.2 MPa m1/2, 300 ± 20 MPa). However, at 1600°C, these parameters would decrease to 1.3 ± 0.1 MPa m1/2 and 120 ± 40 MPa, respectively.  相似文献

Chronic inflammatory diseases and transplant rejection represent major challenges for modern health care. Thus, identification of immune checkpoints that contribute to resolution of inflammation is key to developing novel therapeutic agents for those conditions. In recent years, the CD83 (cluster of differentiation 83) protein has emerged as an interesting potential candidate for such a “pro-resolution” therapy. This molecule occurs in a membrane-bound and a soluble isoform (mCD83 and sCD83, respectively), both of which are involved in resolution of inflammation. Originally described as a maturation marker on dendritic cells (DCs), mCD83 is also expressed by activated B and T cells as well as regulatory T cells (Tregs) and controls turnover of MHC II molecules in the thymus, and thereby positive selection of CD4+ T cells. Additionally, it serves to confine overshooting (auto-)immune responses. Consequently, animals with a conditional deletion of CD83 in DCs or regulatory T cells suffer from impaired resolution of inflammation. Pro-resolving effects of sCD83 became evident in pre-clinical autoimmune and transplantation models, where application of sCD83 reduced disease symptoms and enhanced allograft survival, respectively. Here, we summarize recent advances regarding CD83-mediated resolution of inflammatory responses, its binding partners as well as induced signaling pathways, and emphasize its therapeutic potential for future clinical trials.  相似文献

This comment responds to an article by Steinberg (1986) in which he stressed the desirability of investigating a wide variety of after-school experiences when examining consequences for latchkey (self-care) children. In presenting his results, he inadvertently confounded latchkey children with adolescents who spent time at a friend's house or who "hang out" with friends without adult supervision. Steinberg reported that these adolescents showed greater susceptibility to peer pressure to engage in antisocial activities. We point out that these adolescents do not fit the usual conceptualization of latchkey children and that Steinberg's study may lend support to practitioners and policy makers who assume negative latchkey consequences in the absence of research evidence. High electricity consumption, associated with running Internet scale server farms, not only reflects on the data center’s greenhouse gas emissions, but also increases the cost of running the data center itself. In this paper, we consider the problem of maximizing the revenues of service providers running large scale data centers subject to setup cost by reducing their electricity bill, while considering the fact that clients consuming the offered services have finite non-deterministic patience. As a solution, we present and evaluate the performance of allocation policies which, in the context of both one and two-tiered systems, dynamically switch servers on and off according to changes in user demand. The algorithms we present aim at maximizing the users’ experience while minimizing the amount of electricity required to run the IT infrastructure in spite of non-stationary traffic which cannot be predicted with the absolute accuracy. The results of several experiments are presented, showing that the proposed schemes perform well under different traffic conditions.  相似文献

The effect of reverse room-temperature bending on the crystallographic texture, metallographic structure, and mechanical properties of preliminarily rolled and annealed sheets of copper has been studied. It has been found that the type of the initial structure and the texture represented by the {001}??100?? recrystallization orientation, remains of the deformation texture {112}??111??, and twin orientations do not change; only the ratio of these orientations changes in the process of the reverse bending, which naturally leads to changes in the mechanical properties.  相似文献

In the present study, two powders near-β Ti alloys having a nominal composition of Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-XCr-1Fe (X = 1–2, wt%) were studied. The alloys were produced via the blended elemental powder metallurgy technique using hydrogenated Ti powder. Microstructure evolution and the distribution of the alloying elements between the phases were investigated after each step of thermo-mechanical processing (TMP). Microstructures were refined through the TMP in both alloys. Porosity was reduced with deformation at 1173 K (900 °C) in the β phase field. The β → α phase transformation occurred during soaking at 1023 K (750 °C) in the α + β phase field. Fragmentation of the continuous grain boundary α occurred because of the 40 % deformation at 1023 K (750 °C). Variation in the concentration of the alloying elements in each phase took place through the diffusion during soaking in the α + β phase field, e.g. exit of β-stabilisers from the α-phase. However, the α phase remained supersaturated with β stabilisers. Deformation had no influence on the distribution of the alloying elements. An addition of 1 % Cr content slightly affects the amount of the α phase formed and β grain size, but it has no noticeable effect on the distribution of the alloying elements between the phases.  相似文献

Insect use of native crucifers may be related to patterns in mustard oil content. Consequently, in 1979 we measured glucosinolate content of Rocky Mountain bittercress,Cardamine cordifolia (Cruciferae), using paper and gas chromatography, in relation to: plant organ, phenology, elevation, habitat, leaf position and weight, and plant consumption by two adapted insect herbivores. Results for each are as follows. (1) The predominant constituent in all vegetative organs was 2-butylglucosinolate; concentration of isothiocyanate-yielding glucosinolates (IYG) was highest in roots (1.11 mg/gfr. wt) and lowest in stems (0.07 mg/g). (2) Concentration of IYG appeared to be higher in plants lacking oxazolidinethione-yielding glucosinolates (OYG) than in those with OYG. (3) Terminal cauline leaves had a higher content of IYG than leaves in other positions on a plant. (4) Heavy leaves had significantly higher concentrations of IYG than did lighter leaves. (5) IYG concentrations were not directly related to elevation. (6) Leaves of plants occurring naturally in the sun had concentrations of IYG similar to those of plants in the usual shaded habitat. However, experimental removal of overhanging willows caused a significant, stress-induced increase in IYG concentrations. Finally, (7) feeding by two adapted herbivores, chrysomelids and psyllids, was associated with lower, rather than higher, IYG concentrations. The results demonstrate significant variation in glucosinolate content in a native crucifer and suggest that some of this variation can be partitioned in relation to the ecological and environmental axes examined.  相似文献

Six cases of methyldopa hepatitis, including two in which the patients died are reported; and 77 cases from the literature are reviewed. Patients in whom severe hepatotoxic reactions to methyldopa develop usually complain of prodromal symptoms typical of hepatitis, often with fever, one to four weeks after therapy is initiated. Jaundice, when it occurs, is usually manifest within three months. Asymptomatic, transient elevations of serum transaminase levels may occur in patients receiving methyldopa. However, since the clinical and histologic features of hepatic injury from methyldopa are indistinguishable from viral hepatitis, it is suggested that the incidence of this iatrogenic disease is higher than generally appreciated. Serum transaminase levels should be determined at the initiation of therapy with methyldopa and four weeks later. Moreover, any patient who has unexplained fever or the prodromal symptoms of hepatitis should undergo liver chemistry studies immediately.  相似文献
