A cross-sectional study of serum selenium levels in patients (n = 59) with different types of cancer from southeastern Spain was carried out using hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. The subjects were divided into four groups according to the cancer location (respiratory, digestive, haematological and gynaecological groups). Serum selenium levels in all patients (54.41 +/- 24.80 mg/l) were significantly lower (P < 0.001) than those determined in control groups [healthy subjects from the same area (n = 130) and institutionalized elderly people (n = 93)]. Mean serum selenium concentrations were not significantly different among the four groups considered (P > 0.05). Linear regression analyses performed on serum selenium levels and biochemical markers (total cholesterol, triglycerides, transaminases, uric acid and urea) did not establish any statistically significant correlation (P > 0.05). No significant relationships between serum selenium concentrations and sex or age of patients was observed (P > 0.05). Given the marked overlap between the two ranges of the populations (the means are within approx. 1/2 S.D.) the predictive values of serum selenium are low. Thus, there is indeed a statistical significance between the means, but selenium cannot be used to determine whether or not a patient has cancer disease.  相似文献

The effectiveness of voice therapy for patients with non-organic dysphonia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
OBJECTIVE: To compare how children who use either cochlear implants (CIs) or hearing aids (HAs) express English inflectional morphemes during conversation, i.e., with voice, with sign, or with both. A secondary objective was to investigate the relationship between morpheme use in pediatric CI users and their speech perception skills, length of experience with the device, and accuracy of phoneme production. DESIGN: Group 1 consisted of 25 children who used CIs, and Group 2 consisted of 13 children who used HAs. All children were prelingually deafened and all used simultaneous communication. A 12 minute spontaneous conversation was elicited, transcribed and coded. Between group comparisons were performed to evaluate differences in modality and number of morphemes used. Additionally, use of morpheme endings was related to length of CI experience, accuracy of phoneme production, and closed-set speech recognition performance. RESULTS: Children who had CI experience produced significantly more English inflected morphemes than children in the HA group. CI participants also expressed the inflected endings by using voice-only mode 91% of the time, whereas HA participants used voice-only mode 1% of the time. In the CI group, a strong relationship was found between number of morpheme endings used and speech recognition scores, length of CI experience and accuracy of phoneme production. The results of this study indicate that input from the CI facilitates children's ability to perceive and comprehend bound morphemes.  相似文献

Insulin sensitivity (SI) is useful in the diagnosis, screening and treatment of diabetes. However, most current tests cannot provide an accurate, immediate or real-time estimate. The DISTq method does not require insulin or C-peptide assays like most SI tests, thus enabling real-time, low-cost SI estimation. The method uses a posteriori parameter estimations in the absence of insulin or C-peptide assays to simulate accurate, patient-specific, insulin concentrations that enable SI identification.Mathematical functions for the a posteriori parameter estimates were generated using data from 46 fully sampled DIST tests (glucose, insulin and C-peptide). SI values found using the DISTq from the 46 test pilot cohort and a second independent 218 test cohort correlated R = 0.890 and R = 0.825, respectively, to the fully sampled (including insulin and C-peptide assays) DIST SI metrics. When the a posteriori insulin estimation functions were derived using the second cohort, correlations for the pilot and second cohorts reduced to 0.765 and 0.818, respectively.These results show accurate SI estimation is possible in the absence of insulin or C-peptide assays using the proposed method. Such estimates may only need to be generated once and then used repeatedly in the future for isolated cohorts. The reduced correlation using the second cohort was due to this cohort's bias towards low SI insulin resistant subjects, limiting the data set's ability to generalise over a wider range. All the correlations remain high enough for the DISTq to be a useful test for a number of clinical applications. The unique real-time results can be generated within minutes of testing as no insulin and C-peptide assays are required and may enable new clinical applications.  相似文献

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are characterized by a progressive loss of beta cell mass that contributes to impaired glucose homeostasis. Although an optimal treatment option would be to simply replace the lost cells, it is now well established that unlike many other organs, the adult pancreas has limited regenerative potential. For this reason, significant research efforts are focusing on methods to induce beta cell proliferation (replication of existing beta cells), promote beta cell formation from alternative endogenous cell sources (neogenesis), and/or generate beta cells from pluripotent stem cells. In this article, we will review (i) endogenous mechanisms of beta cell regeneration during steady state, stress and disease; (ii) efforts to stimulate endogenous regeneration and transdifferentiation; and (iii) exogenous methods of beta cell generation and transplantation.  相似文献

An instrument has been developed for real-time, quantitative chemical analys is of organic particles in laboratory environments. In this apparatus, which we call a Thermal Desorption Particle Beam Mass Spectrometer (TDPBMS), particles are sampled into a differentially-pumped vacuum chamber, focused into a narrow, low-divergence particle beam using aerodynamic lenses, and then transported into a high-vacuum region where they impact on a heated surface, evaporate, and the vapor is mass analyzed in a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The average composition of a continuous stream of particles is thus measured in real time, and size-dependent composition can be obtained by passing the incoming aerosol through a differential mobility analyzer. The TDPBMS can analyze multi component organic particles in the 0.02-0.5mu m size range for compound concentrations 0.1-1mu g m3 without particle matrix effects. By using careful calibration techniques that account for particle shape and transport efficiency, the particulate organic components can be quantified with an estimated uncertainty of 20%. The utility of TDPBMS for laboratory studies of aerosol chemistry is demonstrated by monitoring the tridecanoic acid concentration in secondary organic aerosol formed during a smog chamber reaction of 1-tetradecene and ozone.  相似文献

Correlation-based alignment is an alternative alignment method for electron beam lithography. Using complex marker patterns, such as Penrose patterns, which contain more positional information, greater alignment accuracy can be achieved. Correlation-based alignment with Penrose patterns is less susceptible to marker edge defects, such as rat bites, roughness and flagging, since many more edges contribute to determining the marker position. There are however other defects associated with fabricating markers and this paper investigates how defects that result in parts of the pattern being omitted or obscured affect the correlation process when using Penrose pattern markers. We show that in both cases severely damaged markers can be used successfully and demonstrate fabricated structures with sub-5 nm alignment using markers with up to 80% of the marker pattern missing.  相似文献

Several different types of communication disturbances have been identified in the speech of schizophrenia patients. This study assessed 6 types of referential communication disturbances in the speech of 32 stable outpatients, 23 of their nonschizophrenic siblings, and 27 control subjects. The siblings made more frequent reference failures of all types than control subjects and did not differ from the patients on most types of disturbance. Only on the arguably most "schizophrenic" type of disturbance, the missing information reference, did patients show more deviance than siblings. On the vague reference, siblings showed more deviance than patients. These results, which are very similar to those previously reported on parents of patients, support the idea that referential disturbances reflect vulnerability to schizophrenia. Raman spectroscopy is a form of vibrational spectroscopy that is well suited to the molecular identification of a variety of analytes, including both explosives and biological agents. The technique has been gaining more widespread interest due to improvements in instrumentation, sensitivity, and its ease of use, in comparison to other techniques. In this paper, we describe recent advances in Raman spectroscopy with respect to the detection of high-energy explosives and biological materials. In particular, emphasis is placed on the exploitation of enhancement factors that overcome traditional limitations on sensitivity, namely, surface enhancement and resonance enhancement, functionalization of target analytes, and the use of novel lab-on-a-chip technology.  相似文献

The role of organic peroxides in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from reactions of monoterpenes with O3 was investigated in a series of environmental chamber experiments. Reactions were performed with endocyclic (alpha-pinene and delta3-carene) and exocyclic (beta-pinene and sabinene) alkenes in dry and humid air and in the presence of the OH radical scavengers: cyclohexane, 1-propanol, and formaldehyde. A thermal desorption particle beam mass spectrometer was used to probe the identity and volatility of SOA components, and an iodometric-spectrophotometric method was used to quantify organic peroxides. Thermal desorption profiles and mass spectra showed that the most volatile SOA components had vapor pressures similar to pinic acid and that much of the SOA consisted of less volatile species that were probably oligomeric compounds. Peroxide analyses indicated that the SOA was predominantly organic peroxides, providing evidence that the oligomers were mostly peroxyhemiacetals formed by heterogeneous reactions of hydroperoxides and aldehydes. For example, it was estimated that organic peroxides contributed approximately 47 and approximately 85% of the SOA mass formed in the alpha- and beta-pinene reactions, respectively. Reactions performed with different OH radical scavengers indicated that most of the hydroperoxides were formed through the hydroperoxide channel rather than by reactions of stabilized Criegee intermediates. The effect of the OH radical scavenger on the SOA yield was also investigated, and the results were consistent with results of recent experiments and model simulations that support a mechanism based on changes in the [HO2]/[RO2] ratios. These are the first measurements of organic peroxides in monoterpene SOA, and the results have important implications for understanding the mechanisms of SOA formation and the potential effects of atmospheric aerosol particles on the environment and human health.  相似文献
